This is the second (of five) posts comparing "equally powered dragons". I'm going to propose a few changes to certain stats for these (published dragons), in the interests of consistency. I'd like feedback on my proposals. The previous post in this series is at:

In the table below I've listed some game stats for the second tier (Grade B) dragon types (Blue, Silver, Amethyst). For the columns with numeric values (e.g. CR), there is a secondary column (e.g dCR) to the right that shows the amount of change in the statistic between age categories (more details on this in the first post). Both the game stats themselves, and the deltas between successive age categories, will help us identify some interesting patterns (and exceptions to those patterns).

The degree of similarity in values across the three dragons in each age category makes it pretty clear that an attempt has been made to have the dragons in a particular "tier" be of equal power.
Below, I'm going to enumerate some observations about these three dragons, commenting on which differences look like mistakes (while acknowledging that the designers are of course welcome to introduce variability wherever they want to) and which differences look intentional. Given that the gem dragons from Kobold Press aren't as official as those in the Monster Manual, I'm going to put less weight on them (and be more prone to assume errors in their material), justified or not.
I'd appreciate input from others interested in dragons, internal consistency, finding ways to develop accurate measures of CR, etc.
CR: Wyrmling Blue and Ancient Amethyst dragons have a CR one higher than their peers. It would be more consist if Wyrmling Blues had CR2 and Ancient Amethysts had CR23.
AC: identical across all ages, except Adult Amethyst has AC 18 instead of AC 19. This is clearly an error (easy fix ... make it AC 19).
S: Blues have a Str 2 less than their peers (1 less at Ancient because their peers hit the max of 30). This lessened Str was presumably intentional, and may have been done to ensure equal CRs (see 'breath1' below for a stat where Blues have an advantage over Silvers/Amethysts).
D: identical across all ages (10 for everyone, no AC confusion as exists for the Grade A dragons).
C: Each dragon type increases by +4 each age category, except Amethyst only increases by +3 between Adult and Ancient. This is clearly an error (Ancient Amethyst dragons should have Con 29 not 28). That would make Silvers and Amethysts identical, and would leave Blues with a Con two less than its peers at each age. This is presumably intentional (similar to Str), and is probably for the same reason (see 'breath1' below).
I: identical across all ages
W: Blues increase by a consistent +2 each age category. However, Silvers and Amethysts are inconsisent in their Wisdom increases. In the interests of consistency (and not yet seeing arguments to the contrary), I'm leaning toward increasing Silver and Amethyst Wisdoms to equal Blues.
R: Similar to Wisdom, Blues increase by a consistent +2 each age category but Silvers and Amethysts are inconsisent in their Charisma increases. I am leaning towards increasing the Charisma of Silver Wyrmlings from 15 to 17 (then Silvers increase by +2 each age category, and are consistenly 2 above Blues at each age category ... I get the impression WotC wants the metallics to have slightly higher Charismas than chromatics). As well, Amethyst dragons are meant to be the "faces" of the gem family, with a Charisma almost (but not quite) rivaling Golds. But instead of going from 15 to 21 to 25 to 26, it would be more consistent to go from 15 to 19 to 23 to 27.
wlk: walking speed is identical across all ages
fly: fly speed identical across all ages
clm: none of these dragons of a climb speed
bur: amongst chromatic/metallic dragons, Blue, White and Brass having burrowing speeds. For each of them, their burrow speed progresses from 15 to 20 to 30 to 40. This continue increase with age category is a noticeable difference from walk/fly/climb/swim speeds, which always have one value for Wyrmlings, that increases at Young but then remains unchanged for adult/ancient. The Sapphire dragon has the same burrow progression (15/20/30/40), but the Amethyst dragon (which we are discussing in this thread) and the Crystal dragon (which we'll discuss in a different thread) violates this pattern. Without knowing if Kobold Press had a good reason for this inconsistency or just missed this pattern in burrow speeds, I'm leaning to changing Amethyst burrowing speeds to align with the other burrowers (Young Amethyst burrow speed changes from 40 to 20, and Adult Amethyst burrow speed changes from 40 to 30).
dark: darkvision values are identical across all ages
blind: blindsight values are identical across all ages
bite: the bite damage of Blues at all age categories is higher than for Silver or Amethyst dragons (and this is true for all chromatic dragons compared with metallic or gem dragons). This is because chromatic bite attacks do both piercing and elemental damage, whereas metallic and gem bite attacks do piercing damage only. On the other hand, metallic and gem dragons have two breath weapons to the chromatic dragons one breath weapon. More game-mechanically relevant, this increased bite damage risks Blue's have a higher CR than Silver or Amethyst dragons (which by implication we want to avoid). This is probably why Blues have slightly lower Str and Con scores (so that the three dragon types end up having similar CRs while having slightly different dynamics). See my comments above about Str and Con.
claw: The claw damage of Blues is on average 1hp less than for Silvers/Amethysts because their Str is 2 points lower (intentionally). Consistent other than this difference, and it makes sense relative to my comments in 'bite' above.
tail: Same comment as for 'claw' above (Blues do 1hp less, intentionally and consistently).
breath1: average damage is relatively equal for the lower three age categories, but Ancient Blues do noticeably more damage than Silvers or Amethysts. DCs are consistent (with Blues have a DC one less than Silvers/Amethysts). Blues have a line-based breath weapon that increases by 30' each category, while Silvers have a cone that increases by 15/30/30. On the other hand, Amethysts have a spherical area of effect that does not change with age category. This doesn't make much sense to me (although I admittedly haven't contemplated the mechanics of spherical breath weapons much). It makes more sense for the radius to be 5' at Wyrmling, then 10', 15' and 20'. Or maybe 10', 15', 20', and 25'.
breath2: Only Silvers and Amethysts have secondary breath weapons (whereas Blues do more damage with their bites). DCs are consistent.
Do the above suggestions for changes feel sensible? I'm all for adding differences when they increase flavor and roleplaying possibilities, but I'm also in favor of internal consistency. Besides which, if all dragons in a given tier have very similar game-mechanical values, it makes it easier to compute CRs (once game-play has identified a good CR for one of the dragons in the tier, we know the CR of all dragons in the tier). What would you do differently, in the above analysis?

The degree of similarity in values across the three dragons in each age category makes it pretty clear that an attempt has been made to have the dragons in a particular "tier" be of equal power.
Below, I'm going to enumerate some observations about these three dragons, commenting on which differences look like mistakes (while acknowledging that the designers are of course welcome to introduce variability wherever they want to) and which differences look intentional. Given that the gem dragons from Kobold Press aren't as official as those in the Monster Manual, I'm going to put less weight on them (and be more prone to assume errors in their material), justified or not.
I'd appreciate input from others interested in dragons, internal consistency, finding ways to develop accurate measures of CR, etc.
CR: Wyrmling Blue and Ancient Amethyst dragons have a CR one higher than their peers. It would be more consist if Wyrmling Blues had CR2 and Ancient Amethysts had CR23.
AC: identical across all ages, except Adult Amethyst has AC 18 instead of AC 19. This is clearly an error (easy fix ... make it AC 19).
S: Blues have a Str 2 less than their peers (1 less at Ancient because their peers hit the max of 30). This lessened Str was presumably intentional, and may have been done to ensure equal CRs (see 'breath1' below for a stat where Blues have an advantage over Silvers/Amethysts).
D: identical across all ages (10 for everyone, no AC confusion as exists for the Grade A dragons).
C: Each dragon type increases by +4 each age category, except Amethyst only increases by +3 between Adult and Ancient. This is clearly an error (Ancient Amethyst dragons should have Con 29 not 28). That would make Silvers and Amethysts identical, and would leave Blues with a Con two less than its peers at each age. This is presumably intentional (similar to Str), and is probably for the same reason (see 'breath1' below).
I: identical across all ages
W: Blues increase by a consistent +2 each age category. However, Silvers and Amethysts are inconsisent in their Wisdom increases. In the interests of consistency (and not yet seeing arguments to the contrary), I'm leaning toward increasing Silver and Amethyst Wisdoms to equal Blues.
R: Similar to Wisdom, Blues increase by a consistent +2 each age category but Silvers and Amethysts are inconsisent in their Charisma increases. I am leaning towards increasing the Charisma of Silver Wyrmlings from 15 to 17 (then Silvers increase by +2 each age category, and are consistenly 2 above Blues at each age category ... I get the impression WotC wants the metallics to have slightly higher Charismas than chromatics). As well, Amethyst dragons are meant to be the "faces" of the gem family, with a Charisma almost (but not quite) rivaling Golds. But instead of going from 15 to 21 to 25 to 26, it would be more consistent to go from 15 to 19 to 23 to 27.
wlk: walking speed is identical across all ages
fly: fly speed identical across all ages
clm: none of these dragons of a climb speed
bur: amongst chromatic/metallic dragons, Blue, White and Brass having burrowing speeds. For each of them, their burrow speed progresses from 15 to 20 to 30 to 40. This continue increase with age category is a noticeable difference from walk/fly/climb/swim speeds, which always have one value for Wyrmlings, that increases at Young but then remains unchanged for adult/ancient. The Sapphire dragon has the same burrow progression (15/20/30/40), but the Amethyst dragon (which we are discussing in this thread) and the Crystal dragon (which we'll discuss in a different thread) violates this pattern. Without knowing if Kobold Press had a good reason for this inconsistency or just missed this pattern in burrow speeds, I'm leaning to changing Amethyst burrowing speeds to align with the other burrowers (Young Amethyst burrow speed changes from 40 to 20, and Adult Amethyst burrow speed changes from 40 to 30).
dark: darkvision values are identical across all ages
blind: blindsight values are identical across all ages
bite: the bite damage of Blues at all age categories is higher than for Silver or Amethyst dragons (and this is true for all chromatic dragons compared with metallic or gem dragons). This is because chromatic bite attacks do both piercing and elemental damage, whereas metallic and gem bite attacks do piercing damage only. On the other hand, metallic and gem dragons have two breath weapons to the chromatic dragons one breath weapon. More game-mechanically relevant, this increased bite damage risks Blue's have a higher CR than Silver or Amethyst dragons (which by implication we want to avoid). This is probably why Blues have slightly lower Str and Con scores (so that the three dragon types end up having similar CRs while having slightly different dynamics). See my comments above about Str and Con.
claw: The claw damage of Blues is on average 1hp less than for Silvers/Amethysts because their Str is 2 points lower (intentionally). Consistent other than this difference, and it makes sense relative to my comments in 'bite' above.
tail: Same comment as for 'claw' above (Blues do 1hp less, intentionally and consistently).
breath1: average damage is relatively equal for the lower three age categories, but Ancient Blues do noticeably more damage than Silvers or Amethysts. DCs are consistent (with Blues have a DC one less than Silvers/Amethysts). Blues have a line-based breath weapon that increases by 30' each category, while Silvers have a cone that increases by 15/30/30. On the other hand, Amethysts have a spherical area of effect that does not change with age category. This doesn't make much sense to me (although I admittedly haven't contemplated the mechanics of spherical breath weapons much). It makes more sense for the radius to be 5' at Wyrmling, then 10', 15' and 20'. Or maybe 10', 15', 20', and 25'.
breath2: Only Silvers and Amethysts have secondary breath weapons (whereas Blues do more damage with their bites). DCs are consistent.
Do the above suggestions for changes feel sensible? I'm all for adding differences when they increase flavor and roleplaying possibilities, but I'm also in favor of internal consistency. Besides which, if all dragons in a given tier have very similar game-mechanical values, it makes it easier to compute CRs (once game-play has identified a good CR for one of the dragons in the tier, we know the CR of all dragons in the tier).
