How do you protect a Homunculus?

I know it's not meant for combat. Not intended that way. Just asking in case it gets spotted and attacked before it gets away or if it sets off a trap, or two.

Upgrade it with Improved Homunculus feat. Use the repair damage spells/infusions to quickly heal them up. Have a better type of homunculus than the standard one for scouting, like an expeditious messenger.

Keeping it inside a non-bag-of-holding-plus-portable-hoie-able extradimensional space works well.

It can wear magic items too but after spending the cash to immunize it from being destroyed you'll have been better off spending that gold on your own items.

I don't know what class or range of levels we're dealing with here, but a contingent spell seems like an easy answer. Using Craft Contingent Spell to put something like teleport on your homunculus in the instance of it taking damage isn't cheap, but it's reliable.
