The Dungeons

Having returned from a disastrous flying lesson, and keen to focus on his preferred specialism, Pierre returns to the castle but when he goes to Andra's potions lab he finds the door sealed and an acrid scent assaulting his nose. Clearly he couldn't practice in this classroom. He'd have to think of somewhere else to try.

Hmm... All I really need is somewhere that no-one will wander into. Any place will do.

Pierre picks up his potions kit and begins to wander around the castle, generally heading towards the upper floors, checking the doors he passes to see if any are is unlocked. For such a huge castle, there are not that many teachers. I wonder if Hogwarts had more students in the past, or if the English are just crazy.

Of course, Pierre could just go to the kitchens-- they have cauldrons, after all-- but this might turn up something more interesting. And if it doesn't, Pierre will probably head for the Ravenclaw common room next-- a house of knowledge must have potion labs, mustn't it?

Pierre heads far up from the dungeon, avoiding the middle floors where students seem to be everywhere. The moving staircases are baffling and by the time he gets off he's quite turned around. But it's quieter up here certainly, and Pierre quickly finds a classroom that doesn't seem to have been touched in a while. There are old mouldering posters on the wall and he feels a faint chill as steps inside. Still, he could get in some practice here without being disturbed.

Pierre begins to unpack his potions kit, setting out ingredients on some of the tables. What to make today... I will try for Stargrass Salve. I have made it at the château before, so it should okay working without supervision.

Pierre glances about at the posters on the walls as he sets up the cauldron, idly wondering for what the classroom was used. He goes to light the fire, then realizes...I do not know the proper spell for this.

Pierre looks around the classroom to see if there is anything that will solve that problem.

I was never quite clear on how the potion-brewing works in HP. Is it just, like, magic items on the floor? Actual fire pits? Hm.

What should I roll for potions-brewing?

The room is filled with flammable objects from the dry wood of the old desks to the parchment posters. That is if Pierre doesn't mind some vandalism alongside his illicit potion-making.

For potionmaking primarily it will be a case of gathering ingredients, and then rolling a Wisdom (Potionmaking) check. You would add proficiency in the skill and with a potioneer's kit if you have it.

What it actually involves is preparing ingredients and adding them to a cauldron, changing the heat and stirring a specific number of times according to the recipe, with maybe the occasional potion-preparing spell.

For this one, as you need to start a fire, I'll accept a survival check first (DC10) to make a fire with what's around you, followed by your potionmaking check.

Pierre hesitantly clears a large space on the floor, making sure that there's nothing flammable to which a spark could easily jump, and assembles some wood and kindling in the center.

He withdraws a spare ingredients knife from his kit and scrounges up a stone, but before striking the sparks, he figure's he'd better find something with which to smother the fire-- if not water, then an old tapestry, maybe, so long as it's not too elegant.

Once he manages that, Pierre figures, he'll start the cauldron boiling.

Fire safety is important. Especially given the limited spells Pierre knows.

Pierre easily picks through the detritus of the old classroom to find wood to start a small fire, and a tapestry of some ancient battle to use to put it out, should all go wrong. Placing his cauldron its stand, it starts to boil and bubble.

He has some ingredients in his potions gear to brew a simple first year potion.

Pierre slices, crushes, and mashes the appropriate ingredients, adding them to the cauldron when the time appears to be right, and beings to stir.

Pierre's potionmaking goes off without a hitch: he's practised this before and is easily able to brew a suitable concoction. Steam rises from his cauldron as he admires his work. The classroom has remained empty this entire time, so Pierre is confident that should he want to brew again he could rely on this place to remain undisturbed.

Pierre bottles and examines the potion with pride. Regardless of his experience with this potion, an unsupervised success is worth celebrating.

Pierre slips the potion into his bag, making sure the vial wouldn't break, and carefully cleans his lab space. He leaves the desk and fireplace, and the tapestry, set up for brewing another potions. Secure, safe, and well-set-up; this place is excellent. A good place to brew unsupervised, should it be needed. And a good place to test my skill, without interference.

Speaking of which... I should go the library, find more interesting potions to brew. Perhaps brewing some, qu'est-ce que c'est, Re-germinating Potion, for the Herbology professor would get me permission to harvest fresh ingredients.

Pierre slips out, trying to remain unnoticed by anyone nearby. He'd better get back to the dorms before anyone notices.

Definitely using this room again.

Assuming 1 brewing = 1 dose of potion, I've updated the OOC-thread character sheet.
