Hi,

we start a new campaign of 3.5 at lvl 16. I wanted to play an wizard illusionist but I'm not sure yet. What are cool things or goals that you like to do with an high level wizard?

Hi,

we start a new campaign of 3.5 at lvl 16. I wanted to play an wizard illusionist but I'm not sure yet. What are cool things or goals that you like to do with an high level wizard?Races of Eberron has some racial wizard sub levels for changeling, one of which is dual specialization in both illusion and transmutation (which is great for, say, master specialist, allowing you to double-dip on benefits), but you have to give up an additional school. Another is the morphic familiar, which allows your familiar to use its own actions to turn into any type of familiar you have access to, granting you whatever benefits such a familiar would give you. This is expanded manifold if you've got Improved Familiar, Draconic Familiar, etc. Now go look at the spell sovereign PrC (Dragon Magazine #357). It lets you get a living spell familiar of a level dependant upon your level in the class. Note that this lets the morphic familiar turn into any spell of the highest level living spell familiar you can get. This isn't limited to wizard spells, or even arcane spells. Any spell of that level or below. And living spells can cast the spell they're made of at will. So with one standard action, your familiar can turn itself into any low level spell in the game. And note that you can use that and Improved Familiar to give yourself a ton of options. And that's just for your familiar. Consider the Obtain Familiar and Extra Familiar feats for more familiar goodness.

Races of Stone may be one of the best overall sourcebooks for illusionists. The gnome wizard substitution levels have some excellent tools, including the ability to have your illusions fool true seeing and the like. Additionally, it has the shadowcraft mage prestige class. Many guides have been written about that, such as this one (http://minmaxforum.com/index.php?topic=16433.0). Gnome wizard for 10 levels, then completing the shadowcraft mage prestige class fills out 15 levels and will give you a very solid base. The are many incredible one level dips to choose from for the 16th level.

Dragon #345 has the Enhanced Shadow Mastery feat. Increases the reality of [shadow] illusion spells by +20% on a failed save. Great for shadowcraft mages. Pathfinder has the Solid Shadows metamagic feat (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/metamagic-feats/solid-shadows-metamagic/), which does the same for a +1 spell level cost. And they stack, both with each other and with shadowcraft mage fun.

Dark Creature Template from Tome of Magic, has a LA but there is an item that gets it for you without the LA.
Beside goodies the item treats you as a creature from the plane of shadow.

Planar Bubble spell from the Spell Compendium, for a 7th level slot you get 160 mins treat yourself and your spells as if you are from the plane of shadow. Note it literally uses the plane of shadow example and explain what it does.

Plane of shadows has enhanced shadow magic. Shadow Spells are 10% more real and maximized for free.

I've found that Item Creation feats are a great way to amplify your wealth and power (and that of your party members) during the downtime between adventures, if you're playing in a game which provides the time to do so.

At that level my favorite thing is always creating a base of some sort. Going for shadowcraft mage and building a personal labyrinth built within some location in the plane of shadows is always interesting to me. Grab the Landlord feat and you can have quite a large amount of resources put into the base before the campaign starts.

At 16th level the Landlord feat gives you a minimum free 300,000 GP to enhance your base, if you can have another player take it as well you can create quite an effective mage tower for your party to use as a base/healing location. In Stronghold Builder's guide a room that automatically casts heal on everyone inside it only costs 30k, a bed which automatically casts restoration is 38k. Quite useful if you don't have a dedicated healer. There are plenty of other useful options and you have quite a decent budget. :smalltongue:

Build a custom plane. https://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/spells/genesis.htm

Another fun one, is to have fun with circle magic. Red wizard? Use your similacra and max out your caster level and some metamagic.

You could always go for this:

Find or plant an oak tree somewhere, preferably on a plane that is timeless with regards to magic. Cast a Sculpted (un)hallow spell so that it affects some of the tree's canopy. Tie the acorn of far travel (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20040710a) spell to it. Now all the acorns in the AoE are affected by the spell, so you can give acorns out to whomever you like. (You can only have one AoFT spell in effect at once; this doesn't preclude you from affecting multiple acorns with the same spell.) Now use Sculpt Spell to make a bunch of line-shaped (un)hallow spells pointing straight up. Now each of these (un)hallow spells has a different spell attached to it, such as haste, polymorph, magic circle against evil, death ward, etc. Now you count as being under the tree's canopy while you hold the acorn, and all these spells are in effect under the tree. If you want more than one at a time, just make sure you occupy more than one 5' space, and make sure good spell combos are all next to each other below the tree's canopy.
