This 2'x2'x4' footlocker has a domed lid which crowns at about 1', bringing the total height of the chest to 3'. It is banded, hinged, and hasped in rusted iron with a large skull-shaped padlock of the same material.

There is no key. A Skeleton Key will unlock the chest, as will an appeal to a sea deity. A moderate to difficult lockpick attempt may also unlock it.

If the padlock is left unlocked or removed and not replaced, or if it is stolen, when the chest is not being observed the lock will return and lock itself.

Any item placed into the chest will be irretrievably and permanently lost once the lid is closed. If done as an act of sacrifice to a sea deity it is considered to be twice as valuable.

Upon opening the chest using a skeleton key a random item which was lost in the sea may be within. A boot, coin, tool, or similar item will be most common, but valuable or magical items may appear.

Upon opening the chest by invoking the name of a sea deity, an item of value may be found within. Leaving it in the chest does not count as a sacrifice, but removing it reduces the aggregate value of the previous sacrifices. A sea deity may place items needed to complete a quest in the chest.

Picking the lock may allow the picker to open the chest, but there may be nothing in it or a level-appropriate aquatic monster may leap out and attack. Sometimes there will be nautical charts, ships logs, or cargo manifests. On rare occasion there will be a treasure map and a small amount of treasure. Removing one will cause the other to vanish.

If placed in a desert more than100 miles from water the chest will cease to function. If weighted and thrown overboard it counts as a major sacrifice to a sea deity, but it will likely reappear on a distant beach within a century. If burned the one who did it will want to stay away from the sea forever.
