Hi

We play 3.5. The cleric cast Substitute Domain and get the travel domain. It gives him : Add Survival to your list of cleric class skills.

While the spell is still active, he gains a level.

1) survival was not a class skill for him before, can he put points into it as if it was a class skill ?

2) What happens when the spell end? Does the skill points invested into Survival now count as cross skills and he have to revove them from his character sheet since it exceed the maximum allowed by a cross-skill?

Thanks for the information and have a nice day.

It should be valid to learn survival as a class skill and your skill points should not change when substitute domain expires (no rules of that sort exist).

I agree with Anthrowhale here, with a few small caveats that seems likely not to apply. The rules for gaining a level is found on page 58 of the PHB. When you get to step 6, Skill Points, the player selects from available class skills. Nothing happens when the spell expires to those skill points.

The caveat are some rules that are found only in Complete Warrior and Complete Arcane, regarding what happens if you no longer meet the qualifications of prestige classes in those books. Most other sources only check when you gain a level, do you meet the qualifications to take another level. Those two books use different rules, and characters must maintain the prerequisites at all times. (Most people commonly ignore those rules, and they seldom apply anyway).

The other caveat is losing a level, due to energy drain or raise dead or the like.
