The example that comes to mind is to take Ranger Ranger and get both combat styles or psion psion to take 2 disciplines.

No, you can't multiclass same class.

That is why Scout was invented for a similar Ranger-ish class but isn't.

Unless the description of the class explicitely allows it, you can't. And no 1st party class allows it. I once saw a 3rd party class that does something like that: the arcanist and the healer in the 3.5 adaption of World of Warcraft allow multiclassing between their respective paths.

Short answer no.

Longer answer - play Pathfinder as there are usually other ways to get two of a thing. e.g. Dual Disciple Psion, Crossblooded Sorcerer, Dual-Cursed Oracle etc. As Ranger's thing is just "more feats", PF gives that too.

I believe you can multiclass between arcane and divine Generic Spellcaster, even though it is technically the same class.

UA says totem barbarians/monk fighting styles/specialist wizards/etc are no-go on "multiclass with self", but bard/bardic sage or ranger/urban ranger are valid multiclass options, since the latter is a more fundamental change that allows it to kinda sorta count as a separate class.

Probably the common way to do this is something like Hunter Barbarian/Ranger, or Dirty Fighter/Rogue, while you are not taking the same class twice you are able to get those abilities. Lion Spirit Totem Wolf Totem Hunter Barbarian 2/Ranger X/Scout Y could make for an interesting throwing based swift hunter
