View Full Version : Making the most of Warlock damage transformations?

The newer Genie and Undead warlock patrons give pretty flexible passive damage transformation riders to attacks.

1) The Undead offers, each once per your turn
- a fear proc when you "hit with an attack"
- transforming the damage type from whatever it was into necrotic (and getting a bonus damage die), when you "hit a creature with an attack and roll damage"

This is not unlimited use, but PB uses/long rest. At higher levels it should be up for every consequential fight.

2) Genie allows, once on your turn
- deal extra damage equal to PB of one damage type (cold, fire, thunder or bludgeoning), "when you hit with an attack roll"

This is unlimited use.

What other abilities in the game can be readily comboed with these abilities, to add a bunch of passive riders to at-will autoattacks?

- Eldritch blast: combine with Agonizing Blast, Repelling Blast, Grasp of Hadar, Lance of Lethargy, Spell Sniper
- Efreet/Marid: combine with Dragon Sorc "when you cast a spell that does the associated damage type" (fire or cold) to add +5 cha damage to any spell that requires an attack... eg EB, scorching ray, or whatever. This comes out to a passive +11 damage per round at high level
- Efreet tomelock: combine with Dragon sorc for the Shillelagh/GFB combo that normally requires Celestial lock
- Dao: combine Crusher with EB for an additional 5' push and chance to proc advantage for your allies
- Undead: combine with Conquest paladin for an easy way to proc fears, freeze people and inflict passive psychic damage. Shield master to knock people down and let them die to a DOT
- Cleric 8/Alchemist 5: Greywander also offered Cleric 8 for potent cantrips/blessed strikes and Alchemist artificer 5 for their int bonus to fire/acid/poison/necrotic. The latter could be combined with Undead or with Efreeti (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?633113-Revisiting-the-eldritch-sniper-concept)

What else is out there in terms of passive riders, particularly ones that don't take a lot of level investment in non-cha classes? I think the relevant wording is probably "when you hit with an attack that does xxx damage" or "when you inflict xxx damage."

h/t to Greywander's Eldritch Sniper thread for inspiration.

Edit: come to think of it, couldn't anyone dip Genie 1 for their choice of blade cantrips and a free +PB damage to any attack, once per round? The Genie just adds the damage to any attack, doesn't appear to have any prerequisites.

Don’t believe this works. It’s not the spell doing the elemental damage needed, it’s Genie’s Wrath.
