I am currently planning a new character, a 12th-level goblin wizard who calls himself Misfortune, whose particular trick is afflicting his enemies with bad luck. I'm figuring wizard 3/master specialist 5/fatespinner 4, specializing in divination. (Might go with wiz 3/master spec 4/fatespinner 5, depending on whether I decide it's worth giving up a caster level for the fatespinner capstone ability.)

What I'm wondering is, does anyone know a way to get spontaneous casting of a particular spell? Misfortune's signature spell will, naturally, be unluck; I'd like to be able to spontaneously convert my prepared spells into unluck. (Ideally, I could also convert higher-level spells into Heightened versions of unluck.) If there's a feat, PRC, or other way to do this, I'd be most grateful to hear about it.

Thanks!

Oh, I know it's sub-optimal, but I'm a 12th-level wizard. It's not like I have to squeeze out every last ounce of combat performance. And it is pretty nice to be able to say, "Hey, you. You will fail your next saving throw. And I've got a baleful polymorph with your name on it."

Dude you're the DM. He has cast the spell so many times, that his body as become infused with the essence of that particular spell. As a result, he is now able to spontaneously convert 4th-level and higher spell slots into Unluck. If he wants to heighten them though, I would suggest making him do it the old-fashioned way. Otherwise your players (who will already be frustrated by this guy), will no doubt hate you.

Er... no, I'm not the DM. I'm just making a goblin wizard.

What are the chances that you'll be able to talk the DM into letting you spontaneously cast Unluck? That seems to be the easiest way around the problem.

Spell Mastery + Signature Spell(Unluck) should get you what you desire. Signature Spell is either in the FRCS or CompArcane, if I remember correctly.

Ah! I thought there was a feat someplace that did that, but couldn't remember where it was or what it was called. Thanks. :smallcool:

I think there is a feat something like Signature Spell. It gives you a slight caster level bump when casting your Signature Spell. It also allows converting any prepped spell of equal or higher level into your Signature Spell. I remember it being discussed in a build for Killer Gnome, because most of the time Killer Gnome only casts 1 spell, Silent Image, but being disregarded because Killer Gnome makes use of Heightened Silent Images, and applying metamagic to spontaneous spells increases the cast time to a full round action. I don't remember the source of the feat though. Crystalkeep it?

EDIT: Doh, ninjaed...that's what happens when the boss keeps walking by your office!

The feat you are looking for is Signature Spell from Player's guide to Faerun. Prerequistes is spell mastery. Choose a spell you have mastered and you may now convert any spell of the same level or higher into that spell.

OR even cheesier

There is a variant wizard, Spontanepous Divination, in Complete Champion where you an convert any spell into any divination spell of the same level. CHEESE! You lose a free wizard feat (The ones at 5, 10, 15, or 20). It is so worth it.

There are feats--at least for the Wu Jen--that allow a single spell to become available for spontaneous conversion, so the precident is there if you want to talk to your DM about a custom feat.
