Before I start, I'm talking about online D&D the roleplaying kind, not the MMO. ;).

With that said, I know they must exist somewhere, but I've searched around and haven't found anything yet. Are they very common on IRC possibly? Toodles. :smallwink:

edit: lol... Wow. I found one on these forums.

For real-time games using instant messaging tools, I believe there are many games running on various programs, as well as MapTool (http://rptools.net/doku.php?id=maptool:intro) and OpenRPG (http://www.openrpg.com/) which are free programs dedicated to doing this. There are probably a lot of sites dedicated to their use, but one I know of is The Tangled Web (http://www.thetangledweb.net/) which also has a resource for online character sheets.

It seems you've found the 'Play-by-Post' games section on this very site, and in addition most RPG-related forums seem to have some games running in my experience.

Quietus runs a website http://vethedar.proboards25.com/index.cgi for a PbP gaming world, rather than just a single campaign. Its 40 point buy, start at level one, core books, completes, phbII, and a few other things, check the creation information.

So far I like it a lot. Its not as fast as IRC, but its much faster than your typical PbP games. There are two DMs atm, and tho they are a bit busy with school/life/etc, it seems to move along at a reasonable enough pace.

Check it out if you like. New players are always welcome =)

Soulriders (http://www.soulriders.org/) has had, on occassion, a bunch of forum and/or IRC run games of D&D, as well as other systems (HERO, exalted, tristat, what have you). There's a board specifically dedicated for requesting players or GMs for games, and one for smaller scale experimental games as well if you want to dip your feet into that group and see if you'd like to game with anybody there.

I use OpenRPG+ myself. Just google OpenRPG+ (Don't forget the +!) and it should be the first thing that pops up. Free, downloadable chat program that'll give you dice, a gaming table that lets you use minis, maps, fog, and whatnot, and even stream music (surprisingly quick, actually) to set the mood for your game. Did I mention free?
