The Dread Necromancer and Death Master occupy similar turf. Has there ever been any attempts to blend them together, perhaps using ultimate magus or other method? I realize that it is a suboptimum choice, but it has great flavour.

They don't actually have any synergy with one another. If anything, they're anti-synergistic: mixing the two just makes your undead less powerful.

A dip in Death Delver gives you another Rebuke Undead pool so that's something. But going further than a dip would be anti-synergetic on the minionmancy side as Troacctid pointed out.

You also have 3 Wizard-like classes from some Dragon Magazine that might be to your liking (especially Deathwalker IRCC).

You also miss the lich capstone from both, and I would imagine guaranteed intelligent undeath is a key aspiration for most undead-controlling necromancers, since they are very familiar with the alternative.

Gestalt DN/DM?

Second this. While you still give up a lot of the positives of Gestalt, this is the only way I can think of of not making the character actively worse. The capstones even work together!

From memory their spell lists overlap too much for it to be worth theurging them or anything, and they have class features meaning you’re better off sticking with them for a bit.

If you were just focused on the spells ultimate magusing them could be cool, the same spell list bar one or two ones the other wants, one’s prepared the other’s spontaneous. But it’d be kinda boring honestly. It’s like mixing sugar and a sugar substitute: you can, but why, both are fine

UM also doesn't advance the other stuff they get, like turning, familiar, charnel touch etc etc...

It looks like a combination of dread necromancer and death master is Dead On Arrival. If only there was a prestige class that advanced both and also rebuke undead.

There is a prc that can be used to advance both castings but it does nothing for the rebuking.

Which one is that?

Actually, true necromancer has rebuke. Is there some way we can make these two classes qualify?

Death master is arcane prepared and dread necromancer is arcane spontaneous so you can progress both castings with ultimate magus.

I'm guessing Ultimate Magus which was already covered.

Even if you can, the problem is True Necromancer is basically like alternating between the two classes foe the first few levels and again halfway through, so it's almost worse than not taking it.
