What 12 songs would you put on a road trip mix.

ReproMan
2007-11-18, 01:52 PM
Just 12? Good God, that's evil (and the reason I bought a tape adapter for my iPod). Not to mention the utter necessity of fine-tuning the mix to whatever the particular Road Trip entailed (Somber, hopeful mix for a funeral visit. Relaxed, meandering mix for an oceanfront drive. Dance mix for a college move. Et cetera.). Really, I'm gonna need more info here if you want a fully fleshed answer.

Hmmm...gonna have to open up iTunes for this one...

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:
1. Amie by Damien Rice
2. Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard
3. Dance Me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen, sung by Madeleine Peyroux
4. Education OR This Devil's Workday by Modest Mouse
5. Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode (their version or Johnny Cash's)
6. Revolution by the Beatles (their version or the one from the Across the Universe soundtrack, sung by Jim Sturgess)
7. Mercy Seat by Nick Cave
8. Tom Cruise Crazy OR I Crush Everything OR Skullcrusher Mountain by Jonathan Coulton
9. Black Hole OR Vapour Trail OR Rolls so Deep by Aqualung
10. Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's (I dislike everything else they've written, but I'm a sucker for this one)
11. How I Go by Yellowcard
12. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

It was a tough pick, and Revolution by the Beatles No Poetry or Barstool by Gary Jules got squeezed out at the last minute. Also, good albums for a road trip are (in my opinion) Memory Man by Aqualung (every single song is good) or the Across the Universe soundtrack.

I just had to use more than 12...

"You've Got a Friend"
The theme from Friends
"That's What Friends Are For"
"A Whole New World"
"Kiss the Girl"
"My Cherie Amour"
"I am the Walrus"
"Fat Bottom Girls"
"Yellow Submarine"
"Stuck on You"
"Love Me Do"
"My Heart Will Go On"
"She's Got a Way"
"Yesterday"
"Goodnight, Saigon"
"Through the Years"
The theme from "Cheers"
"Moving Right Along"
"I Have to Say I Love You in a Song"

If you laughed, you're awesome. If you didn't, just smile and nod. I might come up with a serious one later.

This made me laugh. The song was even in my head as I was typing my own comment, I just didn't think to mention it. Yay Avenue Q!

Hmmm, let's see...

Nightfall, by Blind Guardian
Turn the Wheel, by Blind Guardian
And Then There Was Silence, by Blind Guardian
Epitaph, by King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King, by King Crimson
Another Brick in the Wall, part II, by Pink Floyd
High Hopes, by Pink Floyd
Afraid To Shoot Strangers, by Iron Maiden
Reroute To Remain, by In Flames
Trigger, by In Flames
Feuerkind, by Subway To Sally
Seemannslied, by Subway To Sally

...although that leaves so many, many songs out I would have liked to take as well. The highest ranking candidats would have been a whole bunch of songs by Pink Floyd (Dogs, Sheep, Learning To Fly, Sorrow, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Echoes, Us And Them, Brain Damage, Eclipse,...), Moonshield by In Flames, something by Nightwish (lots of candidates again, first and foremost FantasMic and Dead Boy's Poem), something by Queen, or more by the bands in the selection above.

EDIT: Oh, wait, road trip mix? As in, not just my favourite songs, but to be heard by others, in company or so?
Hmmm... that might change the list a bit...
Ah, what the heck, I don't feel like typing another one.

For a road trip, my 12 would have to be, also in no particular order:

1.Clutch - Burning Beard
2. Clutch - Opossum Minister
3. Clutch - Profits of Doom
4. Atmosphere - Cats Van Bags
5. El-P Tasmanian Pain Coaster
6. El-P & Aesop Rock - Run The Numbers
7. Rogue Traders Way To Go
8. Primus The Toys Go Winding Down
9.Jimmy Eat World - Pain
10. Iron Maiden - Wicker Man
11. Flogging Molly - May The Living Be Dead (In Our Wake)
12. Atmosphere - Say Hey There (Gott Go to Mexico)

I could easily do more than 12, and do so every day thanks to my MP3 cd player in the car, but those are the 12 I would haev to bring with me if I had to choose.

*sigh* If I must, then I must...

Utterly incomplete mishmash list, composed of songs that get people movin', that get people chillin', that get people thinkin', and that, above all else, get people singin' .

Movin':
'Mosh' - Eminem
'Sex Machine' - James Brown
'No Excuses' - Alice in Chains

Chillin':
'Such Great Heights' - Iron and Wine
'Little Wing' - Stevie Ray Vaughn
'Sunrise' - Norah Jones

Thinkin':
'Harvest Moon' - Neil Young
'Do Right Man' - Aretha Franklin
'On the Road Again' - Willie Nelson

Singin':
'I Will Survive' - Gloria Gaynor
'Sabotage' - Beastie Boys
'Mariner's Revenge Song' - The Decemberists

Mix 'em all up, play it through once, and slam in the next CD without hesitation  .

3. Colours of the Harder Style - Showtek
4. It's a Dream - Dark by Design
5. Indo Silver Club - Daft Punk

8. Dumpweed - Blink 182
9. Above Me - Rufio
10. What it is to Burn - Finch

12. The Note From Which a Chord is Built - Emery

But normally I'd just plug my mp3 into the system :smalltongue:

Down the Road (Kansas)
Communication Breakdown (Led Zeppelin)
Ace of Spades (Motorhead)

And the runners-up...

Little Deuce Coupe (The Beach Boys)
Fire of Unknown Origin (Blue Oyster Cult)
Up Around the Bend (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
Already Gone (The Eagles)
Drunken Lullabies (Flogging Molly)
Nightrain (Guns N' Roses)
Call Me the Breeze (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Flirtin' With Disaster (Molly Hatchet)
Kickstart My Heart (Motley Crue)
Hammer to Fall (Queen)
Come Sail Away (Styx)
Panama (Van Halen)

Take note, this is not a list of favorite songs, it's something I would listen to on a long road trip.

Long Time Gone-CSN (The couruses and subject matter seem appropriate for the start of a road trip)
2112 Overture/The Temples of Syrinx-Rush (Everyone needs a bit of waking up. )
Concierto De Aranjuez (Adagio)-Miles Davis (Why not?)
Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)-Talking Heads (To add a bit of :smallconfused: to your day)
Thoughts, Part ll-Spock's Beard (More of the above)
Free Hand-Gentle Giant ('Cause my hands are free.) :smallwink:
21st Century Schitzoid Man-King Crimson (Everyone else in the car deserves a bit of a shock, don't they?)
Dogs-Pink Floyd (Why not?)
The Royal Scam-Steely Dan (A bit of Jazz is good for you.)
Total Mass Retain-Yes (Because my eyes, eclipsed, convinced the younger moon attained wth love. Blah Blah Blah clear manna from above.)
The Great Nothing-Spock's Beard (I mean... it's Spock's Beard. It's only logical... heh...)
Carry On/Questins-CSN (The best ending to a CD that I could think of.)

Can't think of 12 off the top of my head, so I'll stick with 6:

2. Ludwig van Beethoven - Symph. #8, 2d movement
3. Antonin Dvorak - Symph #9 (New World), 4th movement
4. Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans (yes, it's a train, but it has the right beat)
5. Duke Ellington - Take the A Train (see above)
6. Eagles - Hotel California

Clever ****.

Edit: gah, stupid filter destroying my (tenuous) witticism.

The asterisks represent the shortened form of 'Richard', although since I'm punning on the anatomical meaning of the word I guess it would actually be wrong to circumvent the filter this time.

That was an impressively quick reply.

Mitch Benn is a British musical comedian. He writes satirical and witty songs, often for comedy programmes on radio. However, the thing that sets him apart from many other people who write funny songs is that he can actually sing and play various musical instruments well.
