View Full Version : Cars in the Playground

There seems to be an 'everything else in the playground' except cars, unless I didn't look hard enough. Either way: cars!

I'm currently saving up my money for a new one. I have my eye on an RX-7 in a nearby town that's for sale. My search for a VW Corrado VR6 has not been going well. Plenty of G60s but I guess I'm just being a perfectionist about it  . But for now I'm stuck in my Peugot 307 lol.

I sought an RX-7 for a long time but it seems to be the stock body ones, which is what I wanted, are horded and the only time they sell they are outrageously expensive. Popular cars, they are.

Anyway, this is my car:

I actually got to drive one of these. A co-worker's brother lent it to him and I got to give it a run. Didn't push it because...well it wasn't mine. But oh wow...just handled like a dream and the experience was just mind blowing. Changed my view on cars, it did.

Amen. The stock RX-7 looks fantastic but nearly all the ones I see for sale have some kind of horrendous body kit on them. The one I'm looking at though only has a new front bumper and side skirts. It's a nice front bumper, not completely in your face but stylish. But again, expensive >_<

I drive my mom's minivan. :smalltongue:

well, I do actually have a car - a 1986 Toyota Celica - but it's not particularly reliable, and even if I had a picture of it, I wouldn't share it...eye candy that junker most certainly is not.

Helicopter on the other hand...

I don't drive but I have a car. It's a '99 Oldsmobile Cutlass that used to be my grandma's. My mom drives it and most likely when I start driving I'll take over our Elantra.

My boyfriend has a 97' Firebird. I'm totally in love with that car. We both share a bit of a thing for muscle cars in particular, sports cars as a whole. His dad has a...60-something Mustang Coup (I think). Red with black racing stripes...If they ever manage to get around to fixing it up, it'll be a beauty. I think mention was made of taking it on a road trip if we fix it up.

Dream cars:
For him, '69 Dodge Challenger, with a custom black paint job (it's...complicated) and some other specifics.

Me, I'm not sure. I'm partial to Trans Ams and older Firebirds (you know, the ones with the big Bird symbol on the hood?), as well as older Mustangs. Although this (http://www.lambocars.com/miu/model.htm) car I kind of fell in love with when I was looking for the Lamborghini that was on Burn Notice.

What can I say, we're fans of muscle and sports cars. If we ever get money, I have a feeling we're going to have a whole fleet of them.

Cheers,
Syka

i own a black '95 dodge neon with no modifications (yet).

however, at the moment it doesnt run (hasn't for almost 5 years now.), but i'm working on it. the few times i do drive (i only have a permit right now) i drive either my mom's Chevy Blazer or my sister's Ford Ranger (not sure of the years on those two).

as for my dream car? there are so many i want that i cant pick just one.

I'm currently (well, not right now, but you know what I mean) driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, red with gold trim. It's kind of a gas-guzzler, but I used to need a car that big to haul stuff. (No picture of it - though, honestly, it's not that much different from the rest of the Jeep Grand Cherokees that you see on the road).

Now that it has something like 197,800 miles on it (:smalleek:), I'm thinking that I'll have to get a new car at some point in the next couple of years. If I can, I'd like to get one of those Ford Escape Hybrids - it's big enough to carry anything I need (especially if I end up moving halfway across the country for grad school in the next couple of years and have to carry a bunch of stuff with me in a car), and it saves lot of money of the gas (and helps the Earth).

But, if I could have a car just because it's awesome, it'd definitely be a '77 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (http://www.scoreextractor.com/homepage/f15.jpg) (a la "Smokey and the Bandit").

Still drive the family cars here, but since gas is up to $3.32 in some places around here :smalleek: :smallfurious: I'm looking to acquire soon something like a(n original) VW Beetle.

However, were cash no object, I'd get a 1987 El Camino SS. Drop in a 350 (bored out to 383), supercharged, turbocharged, intercooled, with nitrous injection. Six-speed manual transmission of course. Paint it complete, monochrome black. Mount a (flat-topped, not the dorky "stepped" ones you usually see on Caminos) camper top (also black) and carpet the bed, mounting rear-facing bucket seats in the front. Put power bucket seats in the cab, too, the a/c and radio systems from a Mercedes (I like the way they look - but no nav system, please). Completely digital dash, with all sorts of auxiliary gauges. Ham, CB and "normal" scanner radios. And a "bag o' tricks" panel, with switches to: inject smoke oil into the exhaust pipes; inject fuel into the exhaust pipe tips - where there are spark plugs :smallamused: -; and (best of all) release secret compartments in the rear bumper that are filled with thumbtacks.

...although if I could have any car from across the Multiverse, I'd choose KITT.

Man after my own heart. :smallwink: That's one of the Firebird I've been oogling of late. What can I say...It's the hoodbird. ;)

I think I can handle my boys red 97 Bird, though. Just down the street from where I live, there is a similar model red Trans Am. We think the person modded it up to a Trans Am from a normal Firebird, because other than a couple difference on the front, and the label 'Trans Am', it looks exactly like my boys Firebird (as in, I thought it was just a Firebird until we checked it out one day).

Moment I fell in love with Trans Am's: The last guy I dated's Mom had a red Trans Am that his brother had to borrow until his car got fixed. We all were going out one night, so we hopped in the car and when he started it up...it didn't purr, it growled.

I test drove a '75 with brand new canvas for the camper top.
... and it had a side screen (like mosquito netting) to attach of the sliding door.
... and an extra screen to cover the back hatch for cross-breeze.
... and a travel tray for the drivers seat, while passenger seat swivelled to eat at the foldable table.
... and
... and
... and they sold it before I could get the money. :smallfrown:

I'm restoring a 1973 Lotus Europa JPS with my father to original specs (and a modern sound system, but hey :smallwink: )

My car is a 1985 Cadillac DeVille. It's great for me, bench seats, big block V8, and if I get in a wreck with anything other than a Rolls I'll win. Gas prices may have me selling it for a motorcycle in the not too distant future. (I've been considering an Aprilia, Tuono 1000 R Factory which I should be able to afford by the summer if I get my fellowship)

Lots of very nice cars listed.

My personal means of transportation:

http://www.coyotecode.net/images/truckputer/tp06.jpg

Its run, rides great and has a 5.9L engine... so drinks gas like there's no tomorrow... But then I don't get to complain about that beings I chose the vehicle. And that's why I own a motorcycle.

One of the main reason I got it was because the salesman was unfair.. He says 'Let me pull it out and let you test drive it.' I stand behind the truck and he starts it... Much like the Trans Am above, it didn't purr, it growled at me. As he's pulling out my only words were 'Oh, that's not fair...'

I compared it to a pic on his dad's Myspace and I'm pretty sure it's the same one, just his is red with black racing stripes. It's a '73 Mustang. Poor things doesn't run any more, but they're planning on fixing it up. His dad was going to sell it when they moved (to where we all live now), but Oz wouldn't let him. :smallwink: I think he would have disowned his dad otherwise. Hehe...

The only problem is it's pretty beat up (rust and all, as well as the interior) so it's going to be quite a lot of work. But once I move back home in a year, I have every intention of trying to light a fire under them to get it fixed, and helping out. :smallwink:

Either way, when my boy showed it to me it was almost like those little hearts popped up around my head. Mustangs were my first 'muscle car' love. And it's my favorite colors, to boot.

And what was that, a GPS? My friend brought her parent's Audi up to visit me (her sister was auditioning for the music program where I go to school, so they let her borrow it), and the GPS would yell (yes, YELL) at you do take a turn. "Turn left. Turn left. Turn left turn left turnleftturnleftturnleft!" I kid you not...It was hysterical and annoying.

Sounds like work, but well worth it! Old muscles cars always are!

Its actually a full computer. >.> MP3 player, GPS hookuped up using MS Streets & Trips, with a wireless card in it, all hooked up through the truck's sound system. The software I have actually does the voice directions as well. Its nice when you pull off the 'route'... "Return to Route...... Return to Route..."

Now if I can just find free software and cable schematics to hook it up to the truck's computer...

Yeah, if that is a "shark eye" Mustang, it's worth some serious monry if restored, especially if it's a convertible (convertibles were trending out of style at the time). The first thing that will need attention on one of those is the spaces under the folding top or around the windows (not very well sealed in either conv or hardtop...rust gets bad there), and the bushings in the suspension. One of my friends had a 64.5 convertible, and it sounded like a wooden warship in a storm when it turned corners (*creeeak*).

And, yes, early 70's muscle is beautiful and deserves more love from car enthusiasts. There is another car that deserves mention is the Grand National (http://www.jaj.com/space/efrazier/gn.html). This thing doesn't look like much, but it's got it where it counts.

Deja Vu feeling here.

Yes, late 60s and early 70s muscle cars do not get enough repect.

My first car was a 1972. I still own it. Here's what it's supposed to look like
http://foto.autozone.be/fotosauto/OPE/web450x300/Opel-GT_5182919.jpg
but I currently am in the middle of restoring it, so right now it's a lot of primer and sanded off old paint. It was orange, but I'm more of a fanatic for black.

1972 Opel GT. Not really a muscle car, just a small little look alike to the Stingray Vet. Just love the wheel wells on them cars. It was called the poor man's vet. Somehow the cult club following of this car has inspired many a change in it's overall structure, while keeping true to the original design.

Some examples
It was too low to the ground, so why not...

Or a truck

But that's just me. Also currently in my vehicle inventory is 06 Mariner Hybrid (because it's fantastic to have such a large vehicle get 30mpgs!) and a 99 Mystique. Yeah, I'm a Mercury fan - if I had more money it'd be a Navigator that I'd put into the garage, and a Mustang Shelby GT (600hp) that I'd rev at the lights, but I don't so I can't :smalltongue: .

I've read that it was, in fact, originally supposed to be badged as a Corvette, to be a junor model to the 'Vette, but at the last minute (more or less) GM decided not to make Corvette its own brand and thus it became an Opel.

I own a '04 Mazda 6i hatchback and it is the best car I ever owned. She is comfortable, quick, roomy, has excellent gas mileage, and the only recall on the car was for a slightly faulty back seat safety belt buckle. I have no complaints at all.

Oooo, cars....

The litany:

My first, though mine wasn't a Spyder but otherwise looked just like this one, a 1964 Chevy Corvair Monza
http://www.stenchcroft.com/1964.Chevrolet.Corvair.Monza.Spyder.Club.Coupe/02side.jpg

Then there was this gem. Mine was a '73 and green but looked otherwise like this AMC Hornet Sportabout
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/1972_AMC_Hornet_Sportabout_and_sports_bar.jpg

From there I upgraded to this charmer, a '79 Toyota Corolla that looked a lot like this one
http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_reports/images/2decq5.JPG

Then, ooo, the Toyota upgrade to an '83 Celica GT! I loved this car. I damaged it four hours after I bought it because an ice storm happened later that day
http://www.celica-gts.com/feature_cars/jeff_c/dsc00009.jpg

Then I had a real job and could afford this! (This one actually looks almost exactly like my car, T-tops and all)

But alas she was stolen and I moved on to this more family oriented get around, a 1994 Saturn SL1 much like this one

And my current transportation, which I love, is a 2005 VW Golf GLS TDI (diesel, so I get ~45 mpg :smallcool: )

and this, a 2006 Harley Sportster 883 Custom

I drive a '99 Dodge Ram pickup. It's vastly reliable, but gets pretty poor mileage.

Here is the current Thes-mobile. Though you have to image it with a Yakima bike rack on top.

Drove it off the lot with 13 miles on it.

Lets see, my first car was a 73 Chevy Vega. I bought it for 200, got a 4-cylinder and trany for free and my father and I built it. If you dont know what a vega looks like, think the old camaro fronts with a hatch back (or wagon, or notch depending on style). My parents painted it foxfire red metallic for highschool grad. That is the one I had a accident in and burned from back to front.

Next my parents bought me a 1980 chevy malibu (boat of a car, 2 bench seats and a V8) Think my mom was trying to have me drive a tank.

Then I went to a Hundai Excell (crap car), traded that for a 1986 Chevy S-10 pickup 4x4. It had the little 2.8L V-6 that was a gutless piece of do-do. Replaced that with the 4.3L V-6 Multi-port fuel injected. That was a nice engine. 20 mpg no matter what I did. But that truck was stolen. (price you pay living 1 hour from the Mexican boarder with a 4x4 truck)

Then I bought a 1992 pontiac sunbird. another POS, but for $400 and about $200 in parts it was pretty good, untill it spun a bearing. Still drove it for 2 more years but it just got to the point that it was almost worthless, donated it.

Now I own a 1989 Chevy Blazer 4x4 that used to have a 4-cylinder in it but the previous owner put a hole in the block. I put a 4.3L V-6 in it, and while it still has some problems (I think the injectors are bad or going bad) and a 1992 honda shadow 600 motorcycle (carbs need to be rebuilt).

I have 2 dream cars. What I would kill for (almost) is a late 60's corvette stingray split window. More realistic is the one I am going to build. I have a 1973 chevy vega hatchback sitting in my parents front yard. For now I am going to put 4.3L V-6 in it that my father has sitting in his garage. But after I get some more money I would either put 2 turbo charges on it or a supercharger. I would like to drop a small block V-8 in it but the vega needs a lot of beefing up in the front end to support a V-8 pluss there is little room for that big of an engine. My father and I just put a new V-8 in his race car and you want to talk about some tight fits for some things, it was tough.

Well, I'm currently driving a '93 Plymouth Acclaim, which has power steering, and that's it. I"m hoping my new job, which I hope I'll get here in the next few weeks, will give me the salary to get a new car. Right now, I'm really looking into a Ford Fusion.

My very first car...

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/2532000-2532999/2532274_1_full.jpg

1978 Mercury Zephyr...except it was in horrible shape(the hood was from a 78 Fairmontand the front bumper was bent down inthe middle so it looked like it was smiling, and it didn't have flames, or power stearing, or interior lights. It cost $150 at an auction, got almost five years out of it.

I got to drive one of these here at work.

2007 Dodge Charger, police intercepter model! The police ones only come in all black or all white. Our county has a slighty diferent paint scheme, but pretty much the same. That car has got A LOT of bawls! SO much fun to whip that thing around !

And my dream car... http://www.thechevroletcamaro.com/transformer_camaro_01.jpg

I convinced my father not to give away our old car, an almost 20-year-old Lancia Delta.
I love old cars (by old I mean cars from the 70s) and I want to make mine look like that:

Those cars were great. Mine is black, but I'll make it red.

Italian Cars FTW!

(Still don't have my license, too expensive.)But I drive anyways

You know, I read an article in Car and Driver that rated the worst gas mileage for vehicles. Most on the list were the top end, really fast by made of plastic sports cars much like the M12 you have pictured there. The only other vehicle on the list, in the #2 spot even, was the 2006 Dodge Ram with the Hemi (I think, may have been the Dakota). Lots of power for sure, but a gas guzzler none the less. Maybe you just have an affinity for wanting to use gas? :smallwink:

As for old cars, I wouldn't call 70s cars old. Definitely classics, but not old. Then again, I grew up with my dad having a 1929 Model A Briggs and 1931 Chrysler. I also have an uncle with the 1930 Model A sedan, and my grandpa having a 1928 Model T, 1930 Model A coupe, and my favorite of his collection, a "cross breed" 1926 Chevy Truck with a Ford front end and engine. A custom design of his, as finding parts was hard. He simply cut the front cowl off a ford, welded it onto a Chevy cab, bolted the whole thing onto the chevy frame, and runs it with a ford engine. Reason for loving this car - most who see it say they had one just like it. Which I find amusing. You mean they had a cross-breed truck too? Anyway, back to my point - these are old cars.

@Bushranger - I can see that. The opel was imported to the US by GM for some time, which is how I have one. The prototype Opel GT was in 1964, which is before Chevy went from the Teardrop bodystyle to the Stingray for it's Vette's. Which company came up with the design first I don't know (no idea when Chevy had the Stingray prototype done) but with you, IMHO, I agree it adds cool points to my car. More often then not, people ask me if it's a Vette, which is where I find the true joy in showing the car off.
