Lost Mine of Phandelver

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

1-2 people need to be driving the wagon. For the others, where are you positioned relative to the wagon?

The journey has been uneventful so far, Theo can't complain about his companions, they seems pretty reliable.

At the moment Theo is walking at the right side of the wagon, due to the latent danger of bandits or similar has lead the young Fighter go around with his armor on and weapon at hand, from time to time he feels the compulsion of asking Austine one question or another regarding magical theories and Spells formulas but that would be rather awkward, at least awkward to him who isn't too used to make small talk for no reason.

When Austine was a child their stable master personally prepared the carriage for a day's ride into town. Her youthful tongue could never get his name right. Dodders she called him, sometimes Deodors, in the casually cruel way that children can be. That was beside the point. What mattered was how effortlessly the old man could guide their horses during the journey.

Years later and here she was, straps held too tight, back aching from the road, and patience worn trying to keep the wagon on the road instead of in the brush. What names would Dodders, gods rest his soul, have for her in this moment? Nothing kind, she was certain. She was mulling that over when she caught Theo glance her way again.

There was something he wanted to say, clearly, but he wouldn't get on with it. As said, her patience was already thin and the fighter's failed attempts at conversation wasn't improving its condition. So, when he looked her way again she was staring right back, silver eyes boring straight into his.

"Yes Theo? Can I help you?"

Austine is at the reigns and, for the love of the gods, someone give her a break.

Kiv would'v easily volunteered as a scout if it weren't for the dreadful burning sun outside. Even on overcast days he complained about it a lot. But usually the little kobold kept quiet, trying to pull as little attention onto his person as possible. Dwarves did not outright hate kobolds, but Kiv felt like Gundar or Gundren was not a fan. Kiv would have offered to take less gold than the others, used to a life in the gutters, scavenging and surviving on his own, he was just happy to call a "clan" his own. But the group chimed in, demanding Gundren offered the full pay for Kiv too. Possibly to rob poor Kiv at the end?

Ever since he was kicked out of the Goldsnout clan, the beige-yellow canine reptile was a nervous wreck. Not trying to hide from, but keeping out of Gundren's sight, he usually rode on the one place one would check last, the roof of the cabin. There, the miserable creature had the least physical comfort, but his soul could rest easily as he could see further, not only somewhat balancing out his light blindness, but also helping him notice trouble earlier. He knew his place in this new clan was the same as his old. He was a look-out, a scout and a trapper.

He glances forward, to yip down towards Austine: [Draconic] I do not do horses but I could learn. But I think my place up here is better for all of us. Anxious he would leave anyone out of the conversation, he turns from his well-spoken Draconic into broken common. Austine improved his grammar a lot, but it was still, well, a kobold. Austine want break, but Kiv need to look-out. We swap now, okies? he says, unsure if Gundren allowed it.

I assume switching should be smart enough (i dont do land vehicles, but I think this is a dex check going forth, as well as a wisdom one for animal handling if someone spooks the animals. I was going to scout, but light sensitivity somewhat ruins that for me.

Alaric walked beside the much taller Oskmey, intrigued by, both, the firbolg's nature, and her faith. The lithe young man was of average height, standing perhaps a hand under six foot tall, narrow shoulders and willowy limbs, he could not weigh more than 150 pounds, if that. However, he moved with a confidence and vigor that belied his youth and nature. Wearing the sombre tones of a Kelemvite, dark, rough spun cotton, a high, starched neck, clasped with the scales of the Lord of the Dead. A rich, brocade coat, that hung passed his waist, belted with a broad leather belt, pouches slung from it containing incense, vials, and other religious adornments. On his right hip, was a text, hung from the belt with silver chain, along it's cover an embossed skull, silver filagree scales balancing atop the crown of it's head. He carried a staff, leaned on it as he walked, black wood, sturdy, a knot carved to resemble a skull atop it, and across his narrow chest a brace of steel throwing darts, each engraved with a skull and scales.

Looking up at the broad shouldered woman, his hood pulled up to shield his eyes from the sun's bright light, "Oskmey, we have travelled some days together, and I have witnessed your perform miracles of divine faith, a vessel able to channel the strength of a higher power through your actions and deeds." He paused, considering how to proceed without offending the mysterious woman, "With no wish to offend, I do find myself curious about the tenets of your faith, for it is ... unknown to me, and I have spent considerable time in my own studies which included cursory knowledge of Faerun's major faiths and religions."

She pulled back on the reigns and brought the wagon to a stop. She stood and stretched while he clambered down noting, much to her chagrin, that her legs had started to go numb. She passed the horses to him as Theo hit the vocal equivalent of a stone on the road. Despite the pins and needles she carefully made her way down to ground level, tossing her staff to a conjured hand to keep her own free.

"Theo, we've been over this. I don't get to use that title anymore and you don't get to act like there's nothing rattling around in your head. Now, are you a beggar tugging on the coattails of the Weave or are you a wizard who commands it? Because I would love to discuss concerns before they become problems with another wizard."

During the stop Oskmey notices some Arrox root growing along side the road. His own knowledge of plants indicates that it can be used as an effective healing salve for someone that has the tools to process it.

As the wagons and conversations continue Theo spots something on the road in the distance blocking the party. It looks like 2 large animals lying on the road.

The towering firbolg is clad in chainmaille that jingles softly as she walks. Her Gyðja vestments are packed away so they will not get soiled while on the road.

"One should never have to apologize for wanting to seek knowledge. It is a noble endeavor. When the sky is clear and the sun is high we shall honor the great Phenix and ask that it’s light brings understanding of things unknown."

She spends a few moments contemplating where to start.

"While some deities might provide a strict code of conduct, the great spirits are usually mysterious and elusive. When they do have a message for us it is never given in words, visions and omens are common though the elders tell of times when the spirits were more active."

She pauses to harvest the Arrox root and gives thanks to Arasdoronen for the bounty of the forest.

"It is said that the Kraken once pulled an island into the sea when the inhabitants declared themselves to be mightier than the great spirits and challenged them to a fight."

Upon spotting the obstruction on the road ahead Oskmey looks around for a decent sized stone or stick to throw near the animals to see if they react.

Off to the side, a Goblin woman named Gloria walks alongside the caravan, dressed in drab but clearly well made and tailored traveling clothes. On a normal day, Gloria would have been eagerly chatting with her fellow travelers, but today her head was down, and she was clearly fiddling with some sort of metal gadget. Every so often, she'd utter a mild swear as sparks flew from the device. It was only thanks to dumb luck she hadn't accidentally started any fires and had only stumbled due to not watching where she was going a few times.

This time her luck ran out, she walked head first into the slowing wagon and dropped the thing she was working on. It promptly fell into a puddle.

"What-What the-" She sputtered. "What's going on up there?"

"It is true, having been raised within a monastery devoted to the Lord of the Dead, my view may be more narrow, than I," he paused. "Or even He, would prefer. As he began to remunerate on the nature of life, and it's inevitable end, Oskmey's actions drew his attention to the wreckage that blocked their path.

Quickly noting the cause of death, he determined the direction from which the archer would likely have been concealed. He whipped up his frock, tucking it into his belt, as he moved lithely forwards, up the incline of the hill towards the spot he assumed the archers were hidden, or had been hidden.

Austine's compliment flustered Kiv deeply. His scales unable to blush, instead his tiny tail twitched nervously. [Draconic] You earned the rest. My eyes are worthless in the daytime anyhow. he says, quickly settling into the slog of guiding a slow carriage. The horses were not tired, the road was great, so there was little to pay attention to. He tried to listen in on Alaric's discussion with Gloria, but quickly abandoned the idea for lack of knowledge of any surface deities. He barely knew Kurtulmak, the thief of draconic magic, and only basic rites of Gaknulak, the Trapmaster. His world was in the here and now.

Picking up his bow and arrow as the small kobold looks around in panic trying to hide. Eventually he realizes his fault, as not even an ambush would help his bad aim in sunlight. Alaric twisted as the goblin's broad bladed dagger sliced towards him, on instinct honed by years of training he spun, what would have been a mortal blow turned to a deep cut across his ribs. However, the loss of blood caused his eyes to flare red, briefly, as he hissed at his attacker. With an iron will, he clamped down on his bestial instincts, refusing to slake his thirst on this creature, unduly ending it's life, perhaps, even, cursing it to a life beyond death, the true nature of his own condition lost on even him.

As his companions dealt with the last of the ambushes, Alaric stripped his vestements revealing a toned, but narrow chest with pallid skin. He began to inspect the wounds, deep, painful, but survivable, clenching his teeth, he bound them as best he could. As Omskey called out to him, he nodded, "I will survive, though the wound will pain me until it fully heals." He took a deep breath, testing the bindings and the tension on his ribs. "As for our captives, they have brought themselves to the brink of death by their own folly, and such," he looked towards the artificer, thinking she would be able to translate for her kin, "it should be communicated upon them when they wake. They have contributed to the abduction of Rockseeker and Harwinter, perhaps even their death, and so it is not incumbent on us to spare them the consequences of their actions. However, should they possess information which would allow us to save our employers, their lives may yet prove of value."

The sleeping goblin stirs while being bound but you suspect the others will take some time to recover from their wounds. He looks upon his captors with a look of terror.

"Don't kill me. Don't kill me. Me useful." He sputters out in broken common quickly begging for his life.

Meanwhile Kiv's exploration of the fittings around the area reveal a tail on the north side of the thickets leading northwest. The trail seems to have been used recently and you find signs of about a dozen goblins passing by and reluctant footprints of 2 creatures with footprints resembling those of the more enlightened races.

Gloria, who had been examining the area in an attempt guess if there were any more attackers coming, started as her name was called. "Oh, yes, of course! Interpreting! That makes perfect sense!" For the first time she was grateful her family insisted on speaking the goblin tongue at home, even though no one they knew spoke it. Guess I owe Mama another apology next time I see her.

To the goblin captive, she smile and said in the goblin tongue as soothingly as she could manage: "Don't worry, we won't hurt you. We just want to know what's happening."

Oskmey stands towering over the captives unsure of how to proceed. With the nearest settlement several hours travel time away it would take too long to escort the highwaymen to the local authorities before going after Gundren Rockseeker. Another ten minutes down the path is a pit cleverly camouflaged to match the underbrush around it. With Alaric's guidance the party successfully navigates around the second trap as well.

Finally, after another 10 twenty minutes down the trail you come across a large cave in a hillside 5 miles from the site of the ambush. Alaric was increasingly concerned, the hunger was upon him, the earlier injury from the skirmisher's initial ambush still vexed him, his cursed blood had staunched the wound, but in so doing, roused the red thirst. After vanquishing the entrance guards, he had seriously considered stealing the goblin's life blood to augment his own. However, his fear of, unjustly, condemning the creature to a state between life and death weighed heavy on him, so he waited, his eyes glowing with a blood-red tinge as he stalked forward into the darkness.

He was bent forward in an bestial crouch, his staff held loosely beside him, his lips curled up in a sneer, as Oskmey sought to calm the wolves predatory spirits.

OOC: Moving to be adjacent to Oskmey in the event something attacks her, holding my action to see how the wolves react.

Sorry for the delay in posting, Holiday season and it's chaos are here! Can confirm!

Oskmey digs through her pack and pulls out some cured meats from one of her rations. She takes a small bite to show that it is good before dividing the meat into three portions and offering them to the wolves.

"Master Kiv, could you take a look at the collars while I try to detach the chains from the wall."

She Calls upon Avroninko to help Kiv free the wolves.

Kiv looks at his friend as if they asked him to kill himself. Kiv should approach wolves? Crazy, I say. The whole tiny miserable creature is shaking but the kobold has seen his friend's magic before and puts some trust into her words. Meekly he approaches with a bit of food in his hand. A wild mix of edible mushrooms, stale bread and leftover meat.

Oskmey's first strong pull on the chains manages to causes the steel pins to dislodge somewhat. Another good pull and they come loose. Meanwhile, Kiv's attempts to feed the wolves and keep them calm results in nothing but a few snaps at his hand, but he shies away before they can cause any injury to him. Alaric, watches hopeful for an excuse to attack the beasts and sate his thirst, but no such opportunity is granted.

Gloria looks east the the small fissure at the end of the cave. There is a narrow, steep passageway leading thirty feet u into the darkness. At the bottom is various garbage and rubbish that looks like it's been tossed down to the wolves.

You can attempt to climb the fissure or go back to the entrance of this room and continue north along the stream.

With the chains free of the wall Oskmey offers the wolves some more food and tries to comfort them so that Kiv can focus on removing the collars.

I am reading that last post as the chains are free of the wall and that it does not require a second roll. I hope this is correct.

Leaving them to the wolves once more she wanders instead to Alaric and Gloria. Glancing up the fissure she gave it a decidedly dirty look. Shimmying up a rope was also something she hadn't prepared for on this trip. What an informative day. She was quite tired of learning just how much she couldn't do or help with in this cave.

Marshaling her sour mood, she whispered, "It certainly wouldn't be expected. That might be the best option."

Advancing through the tunnels, Kiv suddenly feels more familiar and yet even more frightened. He knows how to set up ambushes, yet is keenly aware of potential foreign ambushes too. Knowing his allies would probably tumble and break something with the fall, Kiv decides to ignore the garbage chute and scouts ahead for a good 100 feet. If nothing appears however, he will double back and check the garbage chute.

The new goblin though, that was another problem. One she didn't have an easy solution for. For not the first time she inwardly cursed her own inability to help more. Still, they had options. Oskmey's plan in particular was sound.

"That's likely the best we can do for now. If you can get a light near him I think I can hit him with a spell from here. If there are any pursuers then the bridge could be the best place to bottleneck them since they have to cross to come for us, correct?"

Kiv was very happy for someone to bless him and him having an ambush target. Only safer still he would be if he could fall back to a trapped area and use poison. But it was not for now. He pushes out his tiny weak chest and claims. Kiv murder sentry. Return shortly. If run and shout, you save Kiv, yes? With that the urine-colored kobold slinks into the shadows, and up the passage.

The goblin on the bridge let's out a silent scream and a gurgle of blood before falling with a thud off the bridge and onto the stream in front of you. Unimpeded the path curves north east under the bridge then further east. If you continue to scout you can make out the next room in the distance.

This cavern is half filled with two pools of water. A narrow waterfall high in the eastern wall feeds the pool which drains out the western side of the chamber to form the stream that flows out to the cave mouth below. Low fieldstone walls form a dam holding the water in. A wide exit stands to the south while a smaller passage leads west. The sounds of the waterfall echo through the cavern making it difficult to hear anything. Three goblins stand guard in this cave but they don't appear to have noticed Kiv.
