Hello Playgrounders -

I'm reaching out to see if any of you will give some advice on building a mystic wanderer that would be part of a Vecna cult. This character will act as a guide and an escort through many parts of Ravenloft, ultimately revealing himself as a Vecna cultist. I want him to be a knowledge nut; a know-it-all with some casting ability but not a martial character by any sort. I see him having a high charisma too - possibly some bardic influence in the build.

Would I need to use cleric as a base class? Would Fatespinner or Loremaster work with something like this?

Any advice would be much appreciated and a level-by-level reference to feats, spells, etc. would be a huge help too.

Thanks all -

It sounds like a Divine Bard (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#bardVariantDivineBard) fits well? Cloistered Cleric and Archivist have more of a book-smart fluff.

Maybe a factotum?

Like Anthrowhale, I'd start looking at either a Cloistered Cleric or Archivist. Divine Bard may also work, but having the Knowledge domain seems more in line with what it sounds like you're looking for.

I really think the Archivist class from Heroes of Horror seems like it would fit this character very well. You could reflavor his 'dark knowledge' as magical whispers from Vecna.

Archivist is great bit it doesn’t make use of Mystic Wanderers charisma based features very much. Cloistered cleric gets knowledge domain or knowledge devotion for free. You get multiple uses for charisma that way. Sha’ir combos very well with mystic wanderer since it’s charisma sad has wizard spells instead of clericy spells.

Well, there's literally a prestige class called Mystic Wanderer, if that helps? MoF p.35, Full casting progression PrC.

Favoured Soul 6, Knight of the Raven PrC as an evil adaption (Crow of Vecna).

Favoured Soul nails the cultist, 'Crow of Vecna' gets you full BAB and 9/10 casting not to mention great flavour. Rebuke Undead instead of turn undead. One of Vecna's domains instead of Sun Domain. Domain Focus, which provides +2 to saving throws DC to domain spells instead of Light Focus. Smite Good instead of Smite Undead. Negative Energy Burst of the dread necromancer (see dread necromancer class feature) 1/day at 3rd level and 2/day at 10th level instead of Burst of Vitality.

That just about does it for the evil adaption of the Knight of the Raven, Crow of Vecna. Just switch out the deity if you want a Crow of X.

I have mixed opinions on reflavoring KotR to something else in Ravenloft. But I can see it working.

Oh, I thought we’ve been talking about that this whole time. But looking through the other responses… derp.

I am a huge fan of adaptions of all sorts. When you have a player that really wants to play a certain class but it has an alignment requirement, you know that they are going to role play that alignment reluctantly, if at all. Better to cut the Gordian Knot and offer an adaption.

I admit to being one of those. I thought mystic wanderer was just a generic term for a religious drifter.

Was this class ever updated to 3.5 in published material?
