My favorite ever I got off of a netscape article about flooding of the Danube river. It was a red fox swimming. It was my background for over a year until it completely randomly changed itself to something else (as in, I had never seen this picture even in passing). Since then I've had various DevArt backgrounds, an XKCD one, and my current NaNoWriMo Desktop Calendar.
