Hello...
The other day I was playing Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask...when I got an idea...

Lets make a D&D character who primarily uses magical masks!
So...I'd like to be able to use this character...so lets set some ground rules:

I plan on making him a Rogue.
I have immediate access to PH, DMG, Magic of Incarnum, and the Psionics Handbook.
I can get access to a few other books as well, but it'll be tough and I would like to avoid that.

sooo...
Lets start at...say...level 1 and lay out a future for the lil guy! ^_^

So far I have:
Rogue...thats about it, I'm kinda stuck there... >_<;

OH! And please note...I don't want to cheese him...
and while I was sitting around, waiting for ideas...his second level might be Totemist or something of the like for an Incarnum Mask!

You mean like the Master of Masks (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20070105a&page=3)?

I saw this about a week ago and was vastly intrigued. Seems like much fun could be had with this type of prestige class. Wonder what kind of build would benefit it the most... :P

Oh, sweet...thanks!

Does anybody know of any cheap masks (crystal masks, etc.) that I could get for the character? And for how much?

Honestly, Master o' Masks is rubbish.

Use the Chameleon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041210b) and use masks as fluff; it's more powerful, flexible and it's a lot of fun to play.

If you want to primarily use it for Arcane casting, be sure to get three levels of a spellcasting class in before entrance. That would allow you to use the "floating feat" for Extra Spell (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Extra_Spell,CAr) (CAr)--effectively giving you every arcane spell from any list under 7th level.

[Edit:]Masks?

Without just refluffing other face slot items, there are the Crystal Masks (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/items/universalItems.htm#crystalMasks) from XPH.
There's the Mask of the Skull (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#maskoftheSkull), but that's all I see in the Core section of the SRD.
There's the Mask of Lies (CAd), that gives at-will Disguise Self and a couple other benefits. 17k
Spider Mask (Und) that gives Darkvision and some spider-ish benefits (move through magical webs, save bonses against spider poison) 16k

huh from reading both, I kinda like master of masks a bit better. Rather than just fluff, but you can switch more on the fly, and has a more variety of "roles" to switch to. I can definitely see why chameleon is good, just leaves a weird taste in my mouth so to speak.

Not to mention this class is easily more homebrewy for your "custom masks" :P

Well, it's a bit tricky, but if you combine a couple levels of Master of Masks, with a couple levels of a reflavored Chameleon, you end up with a really fun character. I recomend Bard going into these classes, as you end up being able to literally be any class pretty darn well, and have the Cha to make people think you are any of those classes. Combine with a Hat of Disguise, and you are whoever you want.

The reason to use MoM with Chameleon is to get the Gladiator Mask and a few others, which allow you to do two roles at once much sooner than the high level Chameleon ability.

I would think that if you were to combine the two, X* 2/Duskblade 3/Chameleon 7/MoM 8 would be the way to go. The Chameleon 7th level ability is worth racing toward and the MoM levels really don't get you much outside of fluff.

This would get Swift action mask switches, 10/10 Chameleon casting, Extra Spell qualification, Spell Channeling, 6 masks, Ability Boon +4 and dual focus.

*X=Rogue, Factotum, Beguiler, Bard, Ninja, Warlock, Shaper or Trickery Cleric. With a feat, a few other classes qualify as well.

Ya know, I just realized that this might make an excellent npc/bbeg for a campaign am running. Sadly though, my selection is MiC, Core, Phb2, Complete adventure, scoundrel, and warrior...and magic tome... well it's not as small as I thought, but! What about a selection of NPC baddies a "troupe" per say that each specialize in certain masks. (roles). When I get home I'll start looking, but any ideas right now?

villanous/recourring bad guy actors? It's the return of the F. A. G. (whoever gets the movie reference well done.) Otherwise, no offense intended. ^.^

When I get home I'll start looking, but any ideas right now?I would use Binders, they're versatile and somewhat sinister-seeming. They can't switch between roles as quickly as Masters of Masks, but you could surely manage something, be it different masks [and vestiges] on different days or be it DM-rules-fudging (when the character switches masks, he effectively switches Vestiges).

Specializing in a certain mask/role removes part of the concept though. You could use a straight Rogue, Barbarian, Sorcerer and Druid to portray this concept just as well as "mask specialists."

Well more along the lines of the limit of masks available per troupe member. i.e troupe 1 has barbarian, lich, and tiger mask for example and has certain pre-req classes that help those masks out. While another has the mage, fighter, Noble mask. Just for the sake of keeping it slightly balanced when used against the PC's not to mention to give each one a certain flavor. I don't imagine these suckers being a high level encounter for my fledgling pc's

of course adding some DM-fudgery here and there if necessary.

btw, sorry for ninja'ing post to the OP :(

Well, if you're running the campaign you can bring in whatever you want. Rogue, Bard, and Trickery Cleric are all core; Beguiler and Duskblade are PBHII (if I recall correctly); I think Warlock is in one of those books; and Chameleon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041210b) and Master of Masks (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041210b) are both available free online.

Warlock is complete arcane.

Personally, I adore the master of masks. I could never do straight rogue though. Losing the, though minor, spellcasting option would bother me too much.
I definitely would have to do it with beguiler in the fray.

hmm, yea beguiler, cleric, duskblade, and bard may be the way to go for the master of masks team....

Hmmm am a move this to a new thread so as to stop ninja'ing. ^.^ See you there.
