The only houserule you need to keep in mind here is that we don't use ability scores, and only use modifiers

Standard Progression
In the Standard Progression, your character gains a +1 to his Primary or Secondary Ability Modifier. Take good care to look over your entire character sheet, since this might increase the potency of your attacks, skills, saving throws, special abilities and even Armor Class!
Different classes gain ability modifier increases at different rates, with the Fighter and Rouge gaining one additional increase over other classes, at 6th and 10th level respectively, for example.

Feat Variant Rule
You might decide at session 0 to include the Feat Variant rule, which replaces the Standard Progression. This grants each player the option to forgo their ability modifier increase, when they would receive one, to instead gain a special ability of some sorts.
Feats come in two variants, feats and half-feats. Feats replace your ability modifier increase completely, while half-feats allow you to gain half an increase, which can then be brought up to a full increase by taking another half-feat at a later level.

Adept Variant Houserule
This variant rule goes alongside the Standard Progression, and allows each character to gain some new combat-focused abilities. This is great for experienced groups, or those who want to add some more options to how their character deals with combat.
In the variant option, each player chooses between taking the Martial (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Zi5IvFGeIi2FL5n303IylWhkEYiaOWzukIaX_jbgJgQ/edit?usp=sharing)or Metamagic (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nlcj802pa4-Dz94smn72qjimvvlhCKw22q9CwdKD4JE/edit?usp=sharing)options at 1st level, as shown below, which follow the same principles as having takenthe Martial Adept or Metamagic Adept feat:

How do you think the Adept Variant compares in powerlevel to using feats?
Do you think giving the Metamagic Adept a slower progression before 4th and 12th level is gonna be noticable? I wanted to give Martials just a liiiiiiiittle bit more utility off the bat.
Because the idea is "more options in combat", do you think a d4 for a superiority dice is more appropriate?
If yes, would it have to scale to a d6 later, or could it stay as a d4 without Metamagic being favored too much?
