A friend of mine is starting a campaign with homebrew rules, and I am trying to come up with a character that fits it well.

So the concept is that during the day, we will be playing bubblegumshoe and be teens solving a mystery. When our characters fall asleep, they will be transported to a dream realm, which runs on 5e mechanics. I have not played any persona games, but I was told it would be like persona.

When our characters fall asleep, they will turn into some sort of "dream self," which can be their idealized self, how they see themselves, something that represents how they truly are, something they are obsessed with, or anything like that. Without changing the mechanics, these characters are encouraged to be as reflavored as possible. The example the gm gave was that we can reflavor a greataxe as a laser rifle as long as we can explain why it can only shoot people 5 feet away. Or we could flavor heavy armor as being covered in thick fur, or a longbow as a non-fire damage single target dragon's breath, etc.

The big mechanical thing is that our characters can have multiple dream selves that they can switch between as a bonus action, and each of the dream selves is their own 5e character. However, we have to decide how to divide xp amonst the dream selves. For example, if we earned 100,000 XP, we could have one level 12 character, two-level 9 characters, or even a level 11 character a level 6 character and a level 2 character. We were told that over the course of the campaign we would probably get around 800,000 XP. We start with one dream self, and we aren't supposed to know the other character's at the beginning of the campaign, but we can add more whenever we get xp.

My character is a goth cinephile obsessed with old black and white movies. She wants to be a director and is sending out applications to film school. I thought it might be fun to have her dream selves be different classic movie monsters and villains. I want her starting dream self to be a battlefield control specialist, and my gm dared me to make the most op nonsense I can throw at him (which is especially fun as I can do multiclass combos without having to justify them in character)

So yeah, any tips for making a battlefield control character that I can reflavor as a classic movie monster? Any tips for how many dream selves my character should have or how to divide the xp? Any advice in general is welcome!

That sounds pretty damn fun!

For Pure BFC it's hard to look past a Tasha's Sorc or one of a half dozen flavors of Wizard. Or if you want to get weird, an Artificer with a Wand of Web or something.

I dig sorcerer or wizard! sorcerer might be better than wizard because there won't be much downtime. I made another thread a while ago about a support sorcerer, and some people there recommended clockwork (which I was avoiding because I don't love the flavor). Since this campaign encourages reflavoring I might as well go nuts with a clockwork sorcerer with a level dip in order cleric!

Are there are good ways to flavor an order cleric 1/clockwork sorcerer x to be like an old black and white movie or generally goth? Are there any characters that would be good to pair with this character for the character switching mechanic?

On the other hand several members of this party have said they would be curious to see me play a wizard or druid, so wizard would also be a good pick...
