So, your Swarmkeeper Ranger gets to level 3 while in the Mournlands (a place that is severely messed up). What kinds of Swarms would you consider? What is the weirdest thing you can think of?

A swarm of living cantrips. Pick one you like or have it be a variety of cantrips. Firebolt, ray of frost, and eldritch blast swirling around and looking for a target. Or as a ranger, a living magic stone cantrip with sharp rocks so you can get the piercing damage.

There are a lot of oozes there, particularly ones infused with various magics, so the droplets of those could make for a unique looking swarm.

There are also lots of corpses, so insects that feed on carrion like flies or beetles would be a straightforward (if less dramatic) choice. Many creatures there are mutated, so you could take a standard swarm like one of these and have them be altered in some way - an almost radioactive glow that pulses queasily for instance, or each fly in the swarm having six wings tipped with barbs etc.

-Parts of a warforged that got blown apart and polarized so it's constantly trying to rematerialize but can only get so close.

-living spell

-unbound elements

-bone fragments

A swarm of tiny vargoullie, but their "bodies" are individual teeth instead of an entire head. Basically a swarm of flying teeth that cause your dead enemies' teeth to fall out, be animated, and added to the swarm.

I love all of these. Perfectly and deliciously messed up and so fitting to the Mournlands.

If your Swarmkeeper happens to be a Warforged, a swarm of tiny drones, potentially created from his own body.

The mists of the mournlands themselves.

A swarm made of a collection of Cyran gloves.
