Eldryn keeps an eye on the crack in the ground where it is glowing, but for now he mostly focuses on the main threat, the skeletons. He launches another eldritch blast at the skeleton that is now nearest, having helped to take on down already.

This time, he aims at the second one in line, as the skeleton at the front of the line was already badly damaged, and as a full strength blast would probably be overkill.

At raging Byrok, you know the drill.

More blue light appears in the back of the room. A hunched corpse wearing a pointed hat and dressed in a robe embroidered with mystic symbols crosses through the hidden door. Thin wisps of beard float from its bony jaw. It raises a finger, tracing arcane symbols in the air. In a hoarse voice, it speaks: "Secrets found and lost then found again. He rolled a natural 20, and as it is a ray, that should be a potential crit, so I will roll for the confirmation and extra damage.
[roll0] attack confirm

CaoimhinTheCape
2022-09-19, 08:53 AM
So, the way critical hits work you don't need to roll to confirm. So you would have gotten a crit and been able to roll the damage die again, but not at the +2 a second time. I'm counting that as 13 damage (6+7). Regardless...

If the d20 roll for an attack is a 20, the attack hits regardless of any modifiers or the target's AC. This is called a critical hit, which is explained later in this chapter. - PHB 194

Critical Hits

When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target. Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal. To speed up play, you can roll all the damage dice at once.

For example, if you score a critical hit with a dagger, roll 2d4 for the damage, rather than 1d4, and then add your relevant ability modifier. If the attack involves other damage dice, such as from the rogue's Sneak Attack feature, you roll those dice twice as well. - PHB 196

The Eldritch Blast hits the alchemist and you hear the clattering of dozens of bones as they fly in all directions, bouncing off the ceiling walls and floor. Its tattered cloak lays on the ground, unmoving.

The other skeletons don't seem to pay any attention to this, though in comparison they don't seem like they will take as much effort to defeat.

With those two strikes, the final skeletons go down. You now are looking into a room full of skeleton bones, though a few of them (6) reflect the light. Inspecting this, you see that they are dipped in gold. Though the alchemist's robes are tattered and likely useless, digging under them reveals an empty bag of holding.

The secret door that the alchemist entered through is wide open and leads to another room.

Eldryn relaxes a little as the undead stop moving on the ground. He prods the alchemist with his boot, then examines the golden bones in curiosity. He then picks up the bag of holding and reaches inside it, on the off chance it has something stored inside it.

Once he has examined the bag of holding, he goes to the open door the alchemist came through and peers through to the next room.

The gold coated bones seem like they might be worth something if you sold them and the bag of holding is, indeed, empty.

A bench runs down the west wall of what seems to be a laboratory. On the bench are jars of powders and liquids and several pieces of chemical apparatus.

There is a table against the south wall, forming an L-shape with the bench. A book is open on the table.

Also on the table is a candlestick, with a tiny stump of unlit candle still in it, and a variety of other items that, even in the dim light, shine with the warmth of pure gold. One of these objects looks like a human skull.

The book is titled Ye Secret of Ye Philosopher's Stone, no author.

It is written in common, but it seems like this book wasn't exactly edited for readability. It would take 8 hours of study to read the book along with an Arcana check to gain knowledge from this book. At first glance, it seems like the book is trying to instruct the reader on how to create something called a philosopher's stone.

The reagents seem like they would have any number of uses and are what they appear to be.

OOC: It doesn't really give details on these but if you want to take any components for simple spells from here, you're welcome to. If you have anything else you wanna do with them, let me know.

Eldryn hands over the bag of holding without question, and watches as the valuable goods are placed inside the bag. He says, "I wonder what the purpose was in coating the bones in gold. That is an expensive material to coat bones with for no good reason."

When everything is packed away, he goes back and opens the door leading upwards to what he assumes is the house. He hopes to catch any further enemies by surprise, but even so, he is very careful and quiet as he opens the door. If he sees any, he will equally quietly head back to the laboratory, where the party will have the advantage in a fight.

Byrok picks up the golden human skull, tapping it to see if it is solid gold or just some coating. With a thoughtful expression he then approaches Sanbalet and examines his head, as if wondering if his bones might be equally valuable.

This skull is fully gold, not just plating. As for Sanbalet, he doesn't seem to be aware that this room existed and his people had barred it off, so there's probably no connection there.

Yue borrows the bag of holding from Eldryn and begins packing all of the bones from the undead skeletons, the book on the Philosopher's Stone, and any valuable reagents from the laboratory.

For loot, you get: a gold skull, a gold apple, a gold rose, 5 gold discs, gold coins totaling 47 gp.

When everything is packed away, he goes back and opens the door leading upwards to what he assumes is the house. How far do you want to explore on your own? Just the room at the top of either staircase or going through the full house? There's two full floors of the house and while you're sure any enemies would have come down by now, there may be traps.

CaoimhinTheCape

Eldryn only explores to the top of the staircase.

So, there were two staircases to check:

The staircase from the large gathering room leads up to what looks like a trapdoor. As you approach, you get the sense that there is a magical trap at the top, based on proximity. If you want to continue up that staircase, let me know.

There was also a staircase in the room to the north, where you found the dead remains of an adventurer. Those stairs lead up to the scullery. This room displays the effects of damp and decay more than most. Mold grows in patches on the floor, walls, and ceiling. A large copper cask, split, discolored and empty, stands under the window, with a small heap of crockery shards on the floor beside it. There is one door in this room, leading west.

You also get a sense that there is a magical trap here, specifically for anyone who steps on the top stair.

paradox26

Eldryn waits for the others to finish what they are doing, then he says, "There are two staircases. One has a proximity trap, the other has a trap on the top step, so be careful not to step onto the top step. Are you ready to proceed? I recommend we go up the second staircase first, as I don't have a way to avoid a proximity trap at all."

This kitchen is dirty and damp, with patches of gray mold and cobwebs on the floor, walls, and ceiling. In the southwest corner is some iron cooking equipment with a chimney above. Next to it, under the window, is a cracked and discolored stone sink.

To the right of the sink, a small, closed wooden cupboard is fixed to the wall about five feet above floor level.

Against the far wall, a flight of wooden stairs leads upward from west to east; the woodwork of the staircase is decayed, and a few of the treads are missing.

So, stairs going up to the second floor, door going out to the south. It takes a moment but you also find a set of footprints on the ground, which look like they are headed toward the staircase you just came up.

Going up the stairs is tense, but the stairs do not break.

Along the north wall of this area, a staircase descends to the ground floor of the rear of the house. The treads appear to be loose and perilous.

Another staircase along the east wall climbs to the upper level. This stair has mostly collapsed—only the lowest six steps are still intact, and there is no easy access to the hole in the ceiling to where the staircase used to lead. A heap of rotten timber lies in the northeast corner.

Aside from the opening to the attic, there is a hallway leading south, with doors to two rooms before opening up to a larger landing.

Damp mold covers portions of the walls and ceiling in this large bedroom, and rubbish is strewn liberally around the floor. In the center is a single mattress that has been badly torn, from which stuffing protrudes. Under the window sits a large wooden chest, the timbers split and its lid closed.

Assuming you investigate the wooden chest...

The chest is not locked and opens easily. Inside is a pile of moldy, ragged clothing in styles that were never in fashion—nothing of value—and a bundle of documents. These pages are rotted and stained, their meaning lost long ago.

Continuing south, you find yourselves on a balcony, looking over the main entrance of the house. The balcony rail is broken in several places. You see hallways leading to the east and west wings of the house on both floors, and just before the east wing starts you see a staircase leading down to the first floor landing.

Down on the first floor, the walls are bare and bits of smashed furniture lie upon the floor.

As you explore the rest of the house you are able to find little of value (see the OOC thread) but find an urgent situation in one of the bedrooms on the second floor.

In the southeast corner of this decayed bedroom lies a man; he is alive, though bound and gagged. He is clad only in undergarments and appears to have no weapons or equipment.

The man rubs his wrists and then head, where he appears to have a lump. "I stopped in here last night to sleep - I was on my way to Saltmarsh to look for some work and figured it would be better here than on the road. I entered what I think was a kitchen and then someone must have come up from behind me and attacked. I fell unconscious and woke up some time ago. It was already light but I don't know how long it has been. My name is Ned, by the way."

Greetings, Ned. I am Eldryn, of House Duskryn. I am glad we happened to come here, so we were able to free you. The people who were here were not good people. How do you feel? Will you be able to come to town with us? I would not recommend traveling alone, what with the bump on your head and unfamiliarity with the area and everything," Eldryn says. He remains back a little, in case the man is fooling them and about to attack, though he doubts that. Why would the smugglers tie up one of their own men to attack later, when he would have been more useful to them fighting down below in the tunnels?

Sapphire would have received a letter from a resident of Saltmarsh, requesting that they aid the town.

Sapphire,

I hope you are doing well. I hear rumor of a house to the east that has been a problem for our town. Rumor was that the house was haunted. Our council decided to hire some adventurers to investigate and even though they have returned the council still seems to be interested in it. The problem seems to be more natural than supernatural at this point, but they are looking for more help in this case.

If you are free, please consider visiting me in Saltmarsh and aiding our town in this matter.

May the blessings of Procan bring you here safely.

Wellgar Brinehanded

Sapphire would know Wellgar well, the rest of you would have seen him around town. He is a priest at the temple of Procan (Sailor of Sea and Sky) and has a keen memory for anything related to the sea. He always has a story to tell about ships or storms and doesn't care much for what is happening inland. He has one peg leg which he lost during his previous work as a whaler.

A week or so after your adventure through the "haunted" house, each of you receives an urgent request to appear before the council again. The summons seems to be related to your exploration of the house and you have the feeling that it may be a request for you to do another job for the town.

When you enter town hall, you see that more of the seats of the council are filled, this time with three of the five members.

Eda Oweland, the stern looking human woman who spoke with you last time sits in the center of the semi-circular table, the head of the council. On this day she looks serious as ever and while worried may not describe her she seems to be focused on the task at hand.

To one side of her sits an old human man with a well trimmed beard, whose name you learn is Gellan Primewater. Whereas Eda is dressed plainly, Gellan would not look out of place among aristocrats, something unique for this small fishing town. He holds a glass of wine in one hand and leans back in his chair. You guess that without Eda's reproachful glare, he would have his feet up on the desk.

On the other side of Eda is a human man dressed in armor. This man, Eliander Fireborn, looks more like an adventurer than a government official with scars over his exposed arms. He sits at attention, ready for the meeting and you notice that one of his legs is missing, in its place an ornately carved wooden peg leg.

"Welcome back," Eda greets you. "And thank you again for the work you have already done for us."

A handful of adventurers cleared it out and took care of the problem, rescued someone the smugglers captured. I think the council sent over some guards to take a look at the building now that it was safe.

But something's going on again. The council is calling back the adventurers they hired, at least those that stuck around, and I'm guessing it has to do with that house. I'm sure they could use the extra help, if you're willing."

When the meeting breaks up, he heads back to the house and carefully examines each room.

(Flashback, a short while ago)

Sun has just began showning itself from beyond the horizon when a small figure jumped off one of the ships and, giving her surroundings a curious look, waved back to a sharp-eared captain, before hurrying over into the town down the pier.

Not long after, shy knocking could be heard, as a new arrival paced back and forth before the Council Hall's doors. One of the fisherman's noticed her and after a short exchange pointed towards the mansion standing right by the docks. Following directions, she ended up in front of the mansion's gates and slipped inside, as soon as servant has discovered the uninvited guest.

At last, after crossing the grand hall and chaotically explaining her familiarity with councilman, girl found herself standing before Gellan Primewater himself.

With a practiced bow, she spoke:

"It's an honor to meet you, mister Primewater, sir. My name is Eva Chevalier. It might be a little too early right now, apologies for that. Um, here-"

Eva approached councilman with another small bow of head and placed a circle of silvery metal onto the expensive table.

"My good friend, captain Silver-eye, said you could help me with settling around here and finding a job: I am a magician, kind of, th-though I didn't have any official education, you might say — I practice placing enchantments on various objects, and know a thing or two about mechanisms."

At the sight of the coin, Gellan Primewater's eyebrows raise but he recovers quickly and smiles. "Of course! How is the good captain doing these days? You must tell me all about his adventures..." He will provide you with snacks and a meal if you stay long enough, all the while prompting you to tell tales of your time on the seas.

"Ah, there is a matter that our small town could use some assistance with. You see, there was this house that some believed to be haunted so we hired some adventurers to take a look and see what was going on there. It turned out that a bunch of smugglers had used the story of a haunted house to keep people away and use it for their own purposes.

Don't worry," he chuckles. "The people involved have been taken care of. Your friend the captain won't have to worry about those smugglers out on the seas anymore. Well. For the most part.

It turns out they still had a ship out. That ship is due to come in soon and it would be best for Saltmarsh if we could apprehend them or make sure that they couldn't continue their business here.

Some of the adventurers from last time have stayed in town and I assume will be willing to help. I'm sure they would find you to be helpful in this mission. We'll be calling them to Town Hall, to ask them to help us once more. If you're interested, you can meet them there."

Invitation to stay and partake of high quality food was met with enthusiastic nod: while Eva enjoyed Quarions' company and his generosity, life at the sea, with small quarters and dried foods is still not something she is used to, while a good hot meal helped finally settle on solid earth.

She told all Quarion Silver-eye shared from his misadventures: encounters with sea beasts, run-in with a strange small armored ship, and wedding party in one coastal city that turned into the biggest brawl they have seen. Finally finished, she listened patiently and attentively to Gellan's speech in turn, doing her best to remember the details, giving a nod or affirmative sound now and then.

"I am sure these people will be more willing to turn away from their criminal activities when they learn that their little trick didn't help - I would honestly prefer if they just surrendered."

Eventually finishing her meal and carefully wiping lips with a napkin girl stood up - more like jumped off - from her chair, adjusted collar and sleeves, smiling.

"You may count on me, mister Primewater! I will be there for the meeting, and of course would do my best to assist the fair town of Saltmarsh."

She turned to pick up her backpack, taking a minute or so to deal with the belts and clasps, before making a surprised sound.

"Oh, where are my manners — thank you very much for the food, your cook certainly knows their craft. I shall go now to walk around the town and get familiar with local places."

With her usual spring in step and feeling inspired after the encounter with the councilman, Eva went where she meant, exploring the town for a while and meeting new people.

When the time comes, however, doors to the town hall creaked quietly as new face slipped inside, walking with a reserved step, as if the sound of small leather-clad feet could disturb the ongoing session. Eva looked around, studying the walls and furniture, until finally joining the gathering. Seeing unfamiliar individuals she pursed lips a little, then, upon noticing Gellan Primewater waved from the other side of the hall, immediately feeling herself more confident.

Still, Eva decided not to interfere, as she didn't really have much to add to the investigation, waiting and listening at the side.

Jumping forward to when we get to the house...

The decrepit house sits on the highest ground in the area. Around it, a stone wall has crumbled in many places, exposing the interior grounds. An ornate metal gate lies open at the end of the road, swaying slightly in the wind. Wild flora grows throughout the inner yard, but all the years cannot hide the evidence of a well-tended garden that once sat here. Near the house, the rotted wooden roof of a water well rises out of the tall grass.

It doesn't look much better than it did when you first arrived - the town did not want to give any indication to the coming smugglers that anything has changed.

The house's ground floor and first floor are also unchanged, though you're sure that the town guard checked for any traps and disabled them one way or another. The secret door from the living area on the first floor to the Cellar is no longer trapped, as with the Scullery to the Wine Cellar.

The cellar and caves are unchanged though empty now, aside from whatever you all would like to bring. There is a dingy in the sea cave on this level, ready for you to go out and meet the smugglers when the time is right.

Investigation: (1d20+3)[6]
Arcana: (1d20+5)[11]
Insight: (1d20+2)[6]

Eldryn takes a look over the house but he seems to be distracted, pulled from one area to another. These are the things he finds:

In the first floor library, three books stick out to you:

The Magical Properties of Gemstones by the archmage Tenser

The Magical Properties of Herbs and Flowers by the archmage Tenser

The Metaphysics of Mathematics by the mage Nystul

Inside the third volume lies a piece of parchment torn from a larger sheet, containing a few lines of handwritten text in the Common tongue. Dampness has spoiled it so that only two words are legible: "beyond skeletons."

The piece of paper must reference the skeletons you fought earlier.

Searching the attic, you find...

A character who sifts through the rubbish discovers a porcelain doll costumed to look like a sailor. The doll's eyes are made from two pieces of jade worth 10 gp each.

Downstairs, the corpse of the man that the smugglers killed has been removed, as have the bodies of the smugglers.

Eldryn decides to check out Sanbalet's room and finds this scene.

Unlike the barracks, this small room holds comfortable furnishings and appears to be well cared for.

A comfortable-looking bed in the northwest corner has a wooden locker at its foot.

A small wooden table stands against the east wall, with a padded leather chair beside it. On the table, a brass three-branch candlestick with three burning candles provides the room with bright light. The candles, though not fresh, are far from spent.

Under the table is a small wooden box and an unlit bullseye lantern with a movable shutter over the lens.

On a shelf above the table sit three books. In the northeast corner is a closed wooden wardrobe.

A fancy floor-length oilskin coat (5 gp) hangs in the wardrobe. Its sleeves contain numerous pockets (empty), and it is trimmed in iridescent green silk.

The books are (or were, if you had already found them)

A volume of erotic poetry, fully illustrated
A naval almanac listing tide times for the area of coast around Saltmarsh (a total of one hundred miles of coastline is covered)
A treatise concerning the demigod Iuz and its minions

After a brief introduction to the group, explaining her pressence as being joined with councilman's allowance, Eva followed them over to the smuggler's hideout: the building, however crumbling down, still served well for the questionable enterprise.

While others were looking around, Eva followed them, — Eldryn in particular — curiously checking every little thing worth of note. The books on magic caught her eye.

"Did some kind of mage live here?"

She picked up the book on gemstones, carefully placing it on a nearby flat surface and turning over a few pages to get the feel of the general contents, as well as tome's state.

"Interesting.. Oh, what do you have there?"..

Eva has not witnessed the magic Saphire performed, but would approach her hesitantly and lift a palm to her with a small smile, trying not to stare at unusual visage and origin — she had never met tabaxi before! When woman allows her to take a couple goodberries, wanderer would examine them, thinking to herself that this magic seems similar to one of the tricks she learned at some point, before putting berries into one of the small pockets on her outer clothing.

"Thanks."

Afterwards, she'd head over to the small wooden box beneath the table to see if it's open and what is inside, taking time to place the book on gemstones into her backpack, as well as to pull out some instruments — few lockpicks and pliers, enthusiastically looking forward to possible challenge in the form of locks.

"Yes, there was a mage here in the hideout. We managed to defeat him with a bit of a fight, though," he says in answer to Eva's question, as he carefully watched her open the box.

Night falls on the evening that the ship is expected to arrive. You all had plenty of time to prepare and more than likely you would have waited in the empty house so long to become bored, with nothing else to do. A handful of town guard are with you in the house and on alert as well. Just as the council said, they seem to be competent enough to handle the common people of their town but could not last in a fight as you all could.

A few hours after sunset, you see a ship on the horizon. It approaches the coast and turns parallel to the shore, a good distance off. Caspian (and anyone else familiar with sailing vessels) would notice that it hasn't dropped anchor yet.

On the deck, you all see the flash of a lantern in a distinct pattern. The light shines for a few seconds, then it disappears, before flashing quickly three times.

What do you do?

Caspian flips through the nautical book and finds the codes written down.

Long–short–short–short: "Is it safe?"
Short–long–short–long: "Everything safe." (Response)
Long–long–long: "Ready to unload; come to the ship."

Assuming one of you signals back, you would receive the "ready to unload" response from the ship and they would drop anchor.

It takes 15 minutes or so for the guards to row you out to the smuggler's boat. As you get closer you see the name of the ship, "The Sea Ghost" painted on the side of the 90 foot long ship. You only hear a little bit of conversation once you're near, the gentle lapping of waves prevent you from hearing what exactly is being said but you get the impression there's only a couple people on deck at the moment - less than what would be needed to sail this ship.

Eldryn decides he might as well be the first to go up. He is lightly clad, so he can always dive over the side if all goes wrong. And he can use his warlock powers to set the ship on fire if things go badly wrong, but not as catastrophically so.

He climbs up the ladder, his hood up over his face to protect him from being identified as an imposter by the smugglers.

CaoimhinTheCape

Eldryn is the first to climb over the ship to see the boat (though you'll all see this as you get on deck).

Though the light is dim at best, you can see details of the ship's main deck. In the center, forward of the mast, a jolly boat is lashed to the deck with ropes.

Aft of the mast is a hatch to the belowdecks area and a rope ladder climbing to a crow's nest above.

Two human figures lean against the rail mid-deck, staring toward the coast. Between them at deck level is a roll of canvas or rope.

To fore and aft, below the upper decks, stand vague outlines of doors. You can also see ladders that lead to the upper decks, the aft one on the port side, the forward one on the starboard.

From where you are, there are two upper decks. The stern deck (at the back) has only on person on it, keeping an eye out on the sea. The bow deck (front) has four people on it, one of which holds the lantern that was used to signal to shore. You hear muffled sounds of people talking below deck as well, but you can't get a read on how many.

Everyone seems relaxed, going about their day to day business and you don't seem to have alerted them yet.

One of the men in the center deck, where you all are standing walks over to you. He wears a red bandana and you don't know how much is its natural color versus dried blood. His walk is confident if not cocky, despite having something of a limp. As he sees you all board the ship he looks you over, questioningly. "Well, you're not the regulars."

He then orders the prisoners to start sailing the ship towards the town, where they can dock and hand over their captives to the authorities. He then starts to examine the chests, using either located keys, for which he will search the senior officers bodies, or using the mining tools to break them open if all else fails.

Lizardfolk Quarters
The lizardfolk do not have the key on them, but as Eldryn investigates their room he finds the key under one of the hammocks. The chest contains ten electrum ingots worth 100 ep each.

Deck Wizard room
The key to this chest is found on Punketah. The chest holds items of clothing, a leather purse containing 50 gp, and a spell scroll of gust of wind. It also holds Punketah's spellbook, which has all the spells he has prepared recorded on its pages.

Captain's Quarters
The keys are found on the captain.
The first drawer contains two potions of healing, a dose of antitoxin, and a key that doesn't match anything you've seen so far.
The second drawer contains seven maps of various sea and coastal localities, prepared by professional cartographers. Beneath these is another map, crudely drawn.
The chest contains ten electrum ingots worth 100 ep each.

Cargo Hold
50 bolts of silk (50 gp each)
40 casks of brandy (10 gp each)
40 casks of fine wine (7 gp each)
1 large crate of high-quality mining tools (200 gp)

Bosun's Room
The large chest holds a lot of dirty clothes, but they cover a locked chest. The key for this locked chest is found on the bosun It contains 200 sp, a spear, a dagger, and the remains of a crossbow. The design of these seem different from most of the other weapons.

Bjorn's Room
The box contains 500 sp.

He also takes the key that did not seem to have a lock and asks the prisoners if they knew what it unlocked.

"I wonder if these weapons might be magical. They seem unusual common items to be kept locked up," he suggests.

He also takes the key that did not seem to have a lock and asks the prisoners if they knew what it unlocked.

The crew all give suggestions for what the key could unlock, which are all variations of private chests that the captain, bosun, or wizard could have had. From everything you have checked so far, the key does not fit any of these. The crew all seems to be genuine in their guesses. None of them are hiding any extra knowledge.

As you try to break through the back wall, you soon find a convenient place to pry, popping open a secret door.

A dark, cramped area only four feet wide at most, squeezed in between the ship's stern and the adjacent cabin, appears to be a holding cell. A slim humanoid figure (a sea elf) struggles to stand and call out to you, chained to the hull. The man seems emboldened by the magical healing, though he still seems exhausted. Eldryn is able to find a lock on the man's chains and sure enough the key fits.

"My name... Oceanus." He continues to tell his story in broken common. It's clear that he's not completely fluent and when he can't find the right words he briefly describes what he means in Elvish for Eldryn to translate.

"I am part of the Manaan tribe, we live along the coast... what I hope is the same coast we are on now. I had seen a ship pass by frequently, and it kept stopping along the coast where there was no port or village. I was tasked to investigate them, follow them back to see where they came from and what they were doing.

I watched them loading a small arsenal of weapons onto the ship, but someone must have spotted me. I felt a blow to the back of my head and then woke up in there."

Oceanus pauses here, in case you all have any questions. He eventually continues his story.

"I don't know exactly how long I've been here. A man has brought me food twice... maybe three times. They've given me water more often but not much. It has always been the same man. He threatened me, that if I made sounds then I'd lose a limb. I didn't expect to meet an ally on board anyway. But with the fighting above and then your new voices... I thought I would chance it."

Having already searched the ship, you remember finding armor and weapons that were not of traditional make among the stolen weapons. If you describe the weapons to Oceanus, he will identify them as his own.

Eda Oweland welcomes you back to Saltmarsh, smiling for what may be the first time that you've seen. She gives you your payment, of course: 600 gold to be split between the three of you.

After this adventure, you've become minor celebrities around town for taking down the smugglers. Those smugglers who surrendered are put to work in the nearby mines as penance. Sanbalet remains in jail, though he is brought out to work occasionally in the mines as well. He is not brought out as often, as his complaints about the work and low productivity make it more of a pain than a help.

Oceanus stays in town, helping to read the maps and interpret the smugglers' plans. Working with the town council, they uncover that the next destination was a colony of Lizardfolk about 10 miles from Saltmarsh and the weapons were likely intended to be brought there. Logs show that this has been their route for some months now.

The council is preparing a plan of how to approach this issue, as some suspect the Lizardfolk are preparing for an attack on Saltmarsh. They are looking for outside help but would like your assistance in whatever the mission turns out to be, once they have a plan.

He starts trying to figure out a means of defeating the lizardfolk, should they come at the town as expected. Nothing immediately comes to mind, but he is confident that a plan will come to mind as the group gathers more information.

He does not seem to have any more information that can be useful, but continues asking about the deal to free him. On that note...

Eda is the one to respond to you. "I will consider this proposition, but first we will have to deal finish dealing with the smugglers that he was associated with."

Eldryn had proposed that the council offer protection to Sanbalet in exchange for information that another man was a dangerous criminal. Now that the threat of the smugglers has been dealt with, Eda goes over the council's opinions (council members described below).

Eliander is willing to accept the offer provided the information checks out as credible (Eda shares this view, though Eliander would still be primarily in charge of this matter), Gellan is willing to accept the deal immediately, Manistrad does not care in the slightest, and Anders is strongly against giving the smuggler his freedom, though he will not push against the council since he is clearly outnumbered.

The choice for the party is whether they would take Eliander's deal, which would involve proving the information is credible first (which would fall to the party), or to take Gellan's deal, which would free Sanbalet immediately and have the town investigate the matter.

When you are called in again, you see the council at their full membership:

Eda Oweland, the most senior member of the council and arguably their leader. She is stern as ever, but has respect for the group of you as adventurers. She has been assigning you the missions you've been on so far and it pleased with how willing you are to help the town. Outside of the council, she owns three large fishing boats and is interested in expanding the fishing industry.

Gellan Primewater, a wealthy man who dresses in fine clothes and just like the first time you saw him, has a drink in hand. While not drunk or impaired, he seems to view the council meetings as a social gathering rather than a position in government.

Eliander Fireborn, a man dressed in armor. He is an old soldier with battle scars and a missing leg, but he is still formidable as head of the town guard. He is also a skilled linguist, fluent in a number of languages. He is level headed like Eda but seems to be more comfortable viewing situation from a military perspective rather than a merchant perspective.

You are meeting the final two members of the council for the first time.

Manistrad Copperlocks, a dwarven woman who runs the mines just outside of town. She has the physique of a miner and you can see she would be as useful with a pick as she is running the operation. Today, she sits with her arms folded and barely holding her tongue.

Anders Solmor, a charismatic young man who only recently inherited his family's fishing boats after the untimely death of his mother. Everyone in the town is supportive of him and thinks he will succeed at whatever he decides to put his mind to. He watches the meeting with attention, as opposed to Gellan who sits next to him.

In addition to the council members, the recently rescued Oceanus (a sea elf) goes to stand with you all when you enter. It has been a week or two since his rescue and he appears much healthier than before.

"To catch everyone up on this business," Eda said. "Our adventurers here have ousted the smugglers from the cliff house just outside of town. They have also helped defeat the smugglers that were the crew of their ship, capturing many of them who are now jailed and working in the mines."

Manistrad nods in approval to your group.

"From the maps and logs of the ship, it appears the smugglers have been bringing weapons to a nearby lizardfolk colony, near the Dunwater river, for some time now. The amount of weapons delivered are enough to arm a large group. We know nothing of this group and their motives, but our proximity to a group that is rapidly arming themselves is worrying, to say the least."

All of the other council members seem ready to speak, but Eda continues.

"The various members of the have their own opinions about what should be done. We are all in agreement that we would like the help of those present but differ on what we think our strategy should be.

I, Eda Oweland would like to send the party as a small scouting party to map the area and ascertain the strength of the lizardfolk and their intentions."

"I, Eliander Fireborn, believe we need to approach with a show of force to discourage their attack. The adventurers here can lead armed guards to the colony's entrance and demand an audience with their leader to discuss what they are doing."

"I, Manistrad Copperlocks, think we should reinforce the city and ignore them. Why approach on their home turf when all we care about is defending the city."

"I, Anders, Solomor, think we should approach them with diplomacy. These fine adventurers can approach as representatives from Saltmarsh to extend an alliance, and use that to figure out their motives. With no obvious army behind them."

"I, Gellan Primewater, think Eda's plan is fine. We can just do that."

Eda takes the lead of the meeting again. "While we aren't putting it to a vote quite yet, we would like the input of your group to decide what you think is best. Oceanus, if he is to accompany you, favors a stealthy approach to secretly obtain this information.

So, what say you?"

After the town council meeting and you gather all of the necessary materials for your journey, you meet Oceanus (the sea elf you rescued) and two town guards outside of town.

"I was able to put together a map of the area," Oceanus says. "The Lizardfolk village is on a peninsula - with marshland to the north and the sea to the south. I have marked a few places that could be good entrances, but it is up to you if it is better to approach by land or sea.

The sea route is faster and we could use it to quickly reach the marsh or to find dock on the water, but I don't know if that would be guarded or often used. The entrances on the marsh are well hidden, though they may be used by the Lizardfolk as well.

Your boat quietly glides across the water, as Oceanus and the town guards row you in toward the water entrance that Oceanus had scouted. There is a 15 foot wide, 6 foot high opening into a cave.

This large, water filled cave is roughly circular and about 70 feet in diameter. The water continues south, eventually continuing out of view. Directly south there is a flight of rough stone steps leading up from the water to a rough ledge, that continues along the inner side of the cave.
