I don't remember how hobbits came to exist. Can someone enlighten me?

No doubt a mix of humans and lings. The real question is, what are lings? :smalltongue:

And many other things Ilúvatar spoke to the Ainur at that time, and because of their memory of his words, and the knowledge that each has of the music that he himself made, the Ainur know much of what was, and is, and is to come, and few things are unseen by them. Yet some things there are that they cannot see, neither alone nor taking counsel together; for to none but himself has Ilúvatar revealed all that he has in store, and in every age there come forth things that are new and have no foretelling, for they do not proceed from the past. - "The Silmarillion."

Hobbits are generally understood to be some of those things that are "new and have no foretelling." So basically, DM fiat.

Hobbits just cropped up for no apparent reason.

Yeah, those guys tend to get left out of the stories. Remember when Treebeard had no idea what they were?

In the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings there is a forward that talks about Hobbits, and it says that Hobbits are related to men, or akin to the race of men, more so than they are to dwarves and elves.
