Ok, it's my turn to do this Random Banter Thread

Rules for Random Banter Thread

1. Spam. For RB, one-word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and browbeat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single-line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first-page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait for 12 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

And even that is just a 2eism that wasn't in the original edition, and won't be in any edition after, because everyone hated the idea of Snidely Whiplash Ebon Dragon.

AFAIK in all 3 editions the Dragon's Shadow/Ebon Dragon is an ******* >.> The end fiction of 1e's corebook has him kidnapping and brainwashing the Scarlet Empress, iirc

AFAIK in all 3 editions the Dragon's Shadow/Ebon Dragon is an ******* >.> The end fiction of 1e's corebook has him kidnapping and brainwashing the Scarlet Empress, iirc

Yes but the point is that he is not puppy-kicking cartoon evil, but a dark alien entity who is dangerous to interact with like any other Yozi, just a different flavor of alien.

and the fate of the Scarlet Empress being anything other than "I don't know, its mysterious, and thus whatever you want for your game". is widely regarded by both devs and fandom as A Mistake. mostly because Scarlet Empress returning at all is The Elder Problem, Dragon-Blooded edition: things become more about her than the PCs. its for sure not canon in 3e and given the way I've seen people talk about it, many people would go back and get rid of the Scarlet Empress being kidnapped by the Ebon Dragon and the Return of the Scarlet Empress in 2e entirely if they were allowed.

Oh I agree on that front. The idea of the Empress returning is cool and I do like some of the things I've heard about that adventure (Sol dying gives every Solar a bunch of charms, a dot of essence, and an initmacy of vengeance against TED) but given that Return is widely regarded as one of the worst things Exalted has ever put out and it's 100% true that it took focus away from the players I'm glad to see it gone.

My point was that even in 1e TED was a huge *******; this isn't something that 2e pulled out of its ass.

Return gives rules for Elder Essence Infernal Charms.. Even though some of them are traps and it only gives the Ebon Dragon version, and the Broken Winged Crane Supplement despite being described as "Overflow Charms from MOEPI" seems to be building off of the concept of those Elder Essence charms..

And let's be honest, Broken Winged Crane is half the reason people like 2e Infernals, to the point that on the old white wolf forum people were asking for 3E devil tigers and the devs were like "yes they're cool but they promote some stuff that isn't so good in hindsight. We're spinning 'make your own custom thematic charm set' off to its own thing and dumping the transhumanism stuff back into the main charm tree" specifically stating that Spirit of the Living world would be a regular occult charm and suggests have been made of populating the world with gods that act as representatives of aspects of yourself to emulate a primordial's soul hierarchy(as opposed to literally having your own soul hierarchy)

...Which makes me wonder if 3e Infernals will have charms building off of it that allows the infernal to project their inner world into real space on a temperary basis? Current and former Onyx Path writers and developers are known to be fans of Fate/Stay Night.

...God damn it, now I'm trying to imagine a reality marble for my hypothetical devil princess.

I'm more interested in the angle that the Infernals inherited the legacy of the old solars. Not simply their powers or crimes or their arrogance, but in the sense that these guys were betrayed, thoroughly and utterly.

Consider the vision of gold. In it, the Sidereals tell the Solars that what they're doing is going to destroy all of Creation. The Solars realize the error of their ways and with the advice of the Sidereals tone down their behavior, resulting in an even more beautiful Creation. The downside is that this vision has a second possible outcome that basically amounts to "the Solars get worse and Creation gets wiped out".

This is a group of people who have not inherited a legacy of heroism like the Solars or as the destroyers of all like the Abyssals; they are the inheritors of the worst sins ever committed in Creation. These people were the worst tyrants, monsters, and extremists in existence... but they were not beyond redemption. They could've been saved, but the Sidereals chose not to take the risk that they would just go even more crazy and destroy Creation.

A heroic Infernal is presented with the choice that the old Deliberative never got to make (one that they might not have deserved to make, arguably, but still). The constant exercise of their power will lead to a Creation that burns down around them, same as a Solar, but with the Yozi's equally destructive power backing them up that destruction will be accelerated. But if they take a step back, only interfere when they're needed, Creation has time to recover between their massive bouts of horrid atrocities. There'd be a real struggle for an Infernal to hold themselves back... which may not make for the best TTRPG experience but it is at least something to think about.

Or you can go on a path of vengeance... which might be too similar to the Lunars, but it's worth looking at at least (In this case it's less about the Realm in particular, more about the con job the Sidereals have pulled). You learn about the vision of gold, but you're only told certain things about it. You learn that the Sidereals could potentially have saved Creation from the Deliberative that was, but saw a future where they were in control. Creation would be lesser, but it would be under their bootheel.

"So perhaps," the Yozis venture, "you might want to go after Heaven. Not just because the Sidereals are there of course, but because the Celestial Incarnae allowed you to be struck down... your decision, of course. Go out and right wrongs, and Hell, we'll even give you some extra power to do it and reshape the world in our- I mean, your image. Hm, you want to rescue puppies, you say? Here, have a demon that devours the flesh of pound owners and turns their souls into kibble. Kibble that turns those puppies into super-intelligent hellhounds that obey your every whim no matter how brutal. Win-win!"

...God damn it, now I'm trying to imagine a reality marble for my hypothetical devil princess.

There is a charm for that in Exalted Essence: Devil Body Incarnation. One of the effects it has it allows you transform your surroundings into difficult terrain befitting your aesthetic in addition to transforming yourself and various other optional effects. its likely that a full 3e version would offer more extensive versions of this for more uses.

@ Halftangible: eh, kind of plausible, but the anti-authoritarian themes are mixed in heavily in Infernals in 3e. that and they've cut back on the more mythos reasoning of things and to focus more on present motivations rather long ago ancient grudges.

Rater202
2022-01-24, 01:38 AM
Still... The Yozis see their own condition as a great injustice they suffered her(and, given their alien nature, they're not... Quite wrong. They literally can't help but be what they were and are) and Infernal Exalted are chosen from those who suffered some terrible injustice or betrayal themselves.

It's entirely possible that the Yozis, at least those capable of anything resembling empathy, might have seen themselves in the Usurpation era Solars and that's an interesting parallel to make.

...I remember it being mentioned that one of the ideas floating around is that, instead of the Yozis only expecting that the neverborn/deathlords would get a couple of exaltations and that's why there's a hundred abyssal but only 50 infernals, that the Yozis only wanted 50 exaltations.

I speculated, based on the idea that the Infernals are there in part for the Yozis to live vicariously through and that the Yozis would encourage decadence and hedonism that they selected the fifty most decadent and hedonist solar's exaltations.

Now I'm wondering if they didn't select the exaltations of the 50 solars who were best in a position to make the choice, whose actions would have most contributed to which possible future would have come true had the Sids tried to be diplomatic with the solars.

Or maybe the 50 Solars who were most devastated, personally, by the betrayal.

Exalted has the sort of lore that by rights should be making me just shaking my head, like Kill Six Billion Demons, but it's juuust restrained enough that I'm totally fine with it. It's a very fine line between "high octane ridiculousness" and "so ridiculous that it just stops being interesting" and some series just, dance across that razor's edge. Maybe this is a personal failing of mine, but it's one that I cannot ever really get past.

Unrelated: I got a new blanket from my mom for Christmas and it finally arrived. It's the trans flag colours and really beautiful, and you can see it here. (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/508732197231132674/934603419061207140/unknown.png)

It probably helps that Exalted is upfront with the fact that it's ridiculous. Part of the reason it's so over the top is becuase it doesn't take itself seriously.

It's also partly becuase it's trying to emulate a mixture of High Fantasy, a mixture of the narrative feel of several different sets of religion and mythology, wuxia, shonen anime, cosmic horror, and elements of the Punk meta-genre with anything to do with Alchemicles being cyberpunk outright(albeit more with Orwellian states that omnipresent megacorps)

Crazy is to be expected. There are certainly dramatic moments, but there's a martial art where if you're good at it you can assassinate someone by hiding in his teacup and jumping out and punching him so hard he turns into a flock of seagulls and scatters. If you take it too seriously you're doing it wrong.

I live for high octane ridiculousness. one needs to at times contrast it with slower more sedate moments for it to properly have weight and meaning, but its what I love.

@ Rater: ahahahahahahahaa.....

tell that to the Exalted fans who go read things like Debt: The First 5000 Years or talk extensively the sociology/anthropology of Blessed Isle and the various cultures of the Threshold. In my experience, the people who know about Exalted in general rpg community but aren't fans of it think its all Dawn Caste kung fu ridiculousness, but my experiences with the actual Exalted community that discusses Exalted as often as people discuss DnD on this forum, is much more all about the Eclipse Caste/Zenith side of things and taking the politics and cultures of Creation seriously. there are even people who houserule to get rid of oversized artifact weapons which is saddening to me.

Granted: The Solar Kung Fu aspects are part of what attracted me to it.

On the other hand, I'm the kind of person who, if something like the "Scan your gunpla and pilot it in a full emersion VR MMO" thing from that one Gundam spinoff anime was real, would in complete seriousness show up with a show accurate Grand Master Gundam model if that was permitted and possible. I might have a different idea of how fun being overpowered combat monsters is compared to average.

It very much matters what part of the internet you're on. I can't say **** on this board, but there's other areas of the internet where I can.

There's a related issue that big sites are being forced into becoming child-safe at the risk of legislation. It's not something we can really talk about here, but it does lead to blanket measures such as banning of comments on kid-focused YouTube videos, and attempts to work around such measures.

Here though it's more likely just somebody having a different opinion. Some people are pro-swear words, others aren't, your friend likely just ran into somebody who didn't like them.

Yeah, and the thing is I love crazy stuff happening too! I'm a huge fan of Undead Unluck and that series is ****ing bonkers and has the pacing of a bullet train. But it does have those slower moments to make things work, and a lot of heart. Exalted, being a TTRPG setting, doesn't really have any of that beyond just the implicit mechanical chunks that break up the ridiculous, unless you're actually playing it.

Incidentally I follow a pretty funny guy who has been recording his Exalted Essence (and the system Essence grew out of) game, if you want a recommendation. It's the only reason Exalted is anything in my brain other than "that silly dice game HT plays".

Just to check, Exalted is the one that's 40% western fantasy, 10% old World of Darkness, and 50% Shounen Fighting Anime?

If by these percentages you mean:
inspired by Night's Master, Hawkmoon, Imajica, The Black Company, A Song of Ice and Fire, The complete Pegana, Conan the Cimmerian, The Illiad, Journey to the West, Book of Judges, Inuyasha, Claymore, Ninja Scroll, Howl's Moving Castle, the Bride with White Hair, Rome (2005), dynasty warriors, Final Fantasy 7, and Dissidia Final Fantasy, then yes.

because those are suggested specific resources to look for inspiration in the 3rd edition corebook. to say "western fantasy" isn't quite specific enough because it conjures images of tolkienesque worlds of dwarves and elves and hobbits which Exalted is not. to say old world of darkness is slightly true but the connection is thrown out long ago by now, and shounen fighting anime....only if you count Inuyasha and Claymore. Ninja Scroll is something darker than both, and dynasty warriors and FF are videogames. the big three and Dragonball aren't even on there. though I have seen the devs say the 3rd edition artifact weapons are inspired by zanpakuto from Bleach in passing.

@ Zodi: please do recommend it, I love exalted, but finding a game for it online is like hunting for El Dorado.

to say old world of darkness is slightly true but the connection is thrown out long ago by now

I mean, one of the devs wanted to bring it back for a sourcebook.

Then when he got let go he wrote it out as an unofficial supplement. It's very good.

First book covered the core five Exalts, how they've changed by the modern-day in a creation that is less than it once was, how the first generations fo exalts are getting, and how various supernatural creatures see the Exalted.

Second Book, the companion, has Infernals and alchemical, extra charms, and so on.

Third book, the revised edition, has all the material of the first two books tweaked with playtest feedback, optional rules, a conversion for Dark Ages games, even more charms, and rules for Liminels, Dragon Kings, and nothing else.

He's also working on an "Exalted in the Chronicles of Darkness" supplement with the caveat that the Exalted are being reimagined to fit the Chronicles world since it doesn't have the thematic ties between Exalted and the Classic World of Darkness.

Also, different logic: In Exalted vs the World of Darkness the exalts, while not lessened per say, can't access their full power becuase there isn't enough ambient essence in the world, they have to make do with only what their exaltations generate and what they can pull in from places of power(And in the case of Abyssal,s what they can rip out of someone's throat.) What we've been told of the Chronicles version is that the Exalts are Ancient and Powerful and you have to be careful not to warp or damage the shallow reality that is around you.

(Honestly, I'm very much looking forward to it. Especially since Exalted Fair Folk are closer to the True Fae in Changeling The Lost than they are to how faires were depicted in Changeling the Dreaming and I'd be interested in seeing that interaction...)

oh yeah I know about that guy and exalted Vs. Wod. I remember when I told him that he had no right to determine what I found fun once back when 3e first came out and everyone was arguing over the 3e crafting- or maybe it jsut 3e changes in general-- and I was on the anti side who wanted my magitech back. felt good, when people backed me on that. I was more foolish then.

still like Exalted Vs. WoD though, if only for the solar killing a bunch of vampires with a horse mask and mall katana and it being an option where the usual message of "be responsible with your power" is turned on its head as the Exalted are in a situation where they have to go whole-hog with their abilities to prevent the apocalypse as pretty much one of its lasts hopes (with maybe the Mages of Ascension helping). though I'd personally use MnM QDe to run that now, and I have trouble coming up with Exalted characters for a modern setting for some reason.

there is a CoD version in the works? and its just.....bringing back the normal message? eh. probably not my thing. I lost interest in CoD around the time they started announcing a 2nd edition of NwoD. the latest books I have for that is Demon the Descent stuff.

Meanwhile I really like the CofD2e stuff. They've got rid of some of the worst rules aspects and added in the Conditions and Beats mechanics to help guide play, and thrown the attempts at competitive balance between lines out the window. This has resulted in most supernaturals getting a decent buff, especially Vampires and Changelings.

Plus the setting changes are mostly great, to me it feels a lot more focused. Although yes, aside from Changeling oWoD still probably has the better lore and I do own V5 (although I'm missing the Lasombra and whatever they've called the Clan of Death writeups).

oh yeah I know about that guy and exalted Vs.

Li, actual rules for accidentally disrupting and changing reality when overusing your powers in an area becuase the world is less than it used to be and it can't without your full power.

Also, apparently, the Dragonblooded are considered to be a Conspiracy of Hunters, in universe.

Yeah, gonna be honest I haven't gotten any official CoD books in... A while. Still wanna do Princess one day but that's a fan game. Doesn't mean I'm not excited, if only becuase it'll probably be a good read.

Anyway, my current favorite part of what's already released are the rules for Liminels. Broken pseudo-zombies who don't know how to people, whose bodies feel wrong,

I was reading the write-up and the idea of a Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl in a white dress crawling out of a cauldron full of vampire blood and rendered down body parts and the first words out of her mouth are "father, why?"

...And then the Hedge Wizard who conjured her into existence(or so he thinks) is just... a sociopathic wizard version of Professor Utoniom. the Liminal is played straight as a tortured existence who isn't quite alive and feels compelled to destroy or banish the unquiet dead while trying to cope with memories that aren't hers and a body that doesn't feel right...

And then there's her "Dad" who is just.. Exactly professor Utonium except for the killing people for raw materials and the dabbling in forbidden magic.

Something about the sheer contrast, the... Bathos appeals to me. The sheer bathos of the young woman's tortured existence being contrasted against her father coming up from the basement laboratory, wiping the blood on his hands off on his lab coat, and then sitting down and trying to be an intellectual and a fifties sitcom-style doting father to her but never answering 'why he made her' appeals to me. She's played straight, he's played for black comedy and absurdity.

I don't know why. Something might be wrong with me.

That's exactly the point MM was making. You have bad grammar and spelling mistakes, and we offer help or advice if you ask for it or mention it. Someone else has bad grammar ant sorting mistakes and you many fun of them and call them a crybaby when they don't like being made fun of. And when someone points this out to you, you brush it off so that you don't need to think about your own behavior.

And then you complain about "drama" that constantly happens with you in other online communities.

While that's true, I feel like there is something about Exalted that somehow "works" better than K6BD for me.

I've tried to get into K6BD. Never really liked it.

Exalted starts out silly-lookin and goofy as all hell but the more you dig into it the more you come across things that range from interesting, to morally gray, to genuinely disturbing. My favorite Exalted game actually took place before the fall of Thorns, and we as players were trying to deal with massive political instability, a rising death cult, the loss of Immaculate faith, and a domestic economy that was too small for the city. The only fights that game had were regimented duels and one fight with a random Greenmaw.

comedy is a thing that breaks social rules and taboos. as is horror. don't worry about it. its why one of the oldest jokes is "The Aristocrats".

and yeah, sounds like a possible Liminal Exalted relationship as well. the one time I managed to get into Exalted game, the Twilight Sorceress I was playing was searching for her demon mother who wove her out of flesh because her human mother had died. my character was prepared for the demon mother to be the usual example of a Neomah but got a doting mother who baked cookies instead, more genuine than your example though (the Twilight Sorceress was basically just an Exalted prototype of Kimiko, for your information, wanted to become the greatest sorcerer in all of Creation, game didn't last very long)

It is a series that aggressively wears what it is on its sleeve (originally created as a memey, forum born comic in the Homestuck fandom) and it is so built upon "Nihilism is good actually" that I just cannot so much as bare to think about it.

With RWBY, it's a brain worm that is amusing to talk about. Something bad that is enjoybly bad, for the most part. Hunter x Hunter and Jujutsu Kaisen are series that are annoyingly bad, where I cannot stand them and feel like I should be able to enjoy them, but cannot. Kill 6 Billion Demons is the infuriatingly bad, where its entire ethos is antithesis to my own beliefs, where almost every aspect of it is frustrating because I SHOuLD be able to like this, but it's outright refuses me. It strikes at me and says no, go away, the only character you like is named coca cola and she's been fridged now **** off.

I never really got into K6BD either, despite the Exalted fandom loving it. it seems to be more inspirational for its baroque eastern mythos inspired stuff than anything else. never could figure out what the plot was or what people were talking about half the time, and I don't remember much of it.

@ Peelee: a century is pretty old for a joke. most jokes don't live to see past a decade.

Meanwhile I've found that I love horror aesthetics and themes, but hate the fore that people tend to insist on shoving in alongside it. One of my favourite games is Unknown Armies for the horror coming as much from the sacrifice of principles as anything else. Action in and of itself is boring.

But then again my favourite comic is Girl Genius because it balances the horrific parts of the worldbuilding with humour, and has great drama and action to go along with it. It does at points get across how terrifying the Jaegers must be to fight, or just how bad the Spark actually is for the world

So I just looked it up, apparently, the oldest joke that we know of dates back to Sumeria, circa 1900 BCE.

It translates into something like this.

"What is something that has never happened since time immemorial?"

"A woman has never not farted while sitting on her husband's lap."

...So it's an awful marriage joke... and a fart joke, rolled into one.

The oldest joke known to man is something you might see in an episode of South Park.. Humor has... Basically stayed more or less unchanged in 4000 years. Things come and go but...

Which I think is the greatest joke of all. I can't stop laughing at the idea that... Is this a form of irony or a form of bathos?

Its nice that you appreciate us, but I for one find it rather off putting when you describe a situation like the facebook one from the other day and then act offended when people tell you that you were in the wrong, or when you just give a flat acknowledgement that people have said something and not act on it. It gives the impression that you just ignore everything that makes you uncomfortable. Even defending your behavior would be better, since at least then we know your honest thoughts even if we disagree with them.

Yeah, generally the best way to find the creator of the drama is to look at who's involved in a lot of it.

Now granted, it's possible that such a person is legitimately just reacting to something someone else did. But even then most of the time their decision to react is what caused the drama.

Although the biggest incident of drama I was involved with at work almost dragged on because I admitted fault. But that was a strange situation that brought up other grievances.

There's an Exalted Discord that regularly hosts games I could point you to, if you like.

"only if you count Inuyasha and Claymore"

... why? Shounen battle anime/manga fits perfectly with (certain) aspects of Exalted combat. Pretty sure Solars have a charm that is just a DBZ ki blast.

I tried to read the comic multiple times and I know nothing about its world or characters that actually seems interesting.

Look bitch (the MC of the comic, not either of you) I get it. You just want to get laid. Nothing wrong with that (beyond the extramarital sex in my Christian minecraft server). But if you're clearly not interested in this other world you're in why should I be? Why should I read past the point where you appear to be back in your house? Why should I care if your boyfriend is missing when all I know about him is you were banging? (And maybe I was just misreading but it seemed like you were very uncomfortable with the sex anyway)

Also the art is ugly. Incredibly, immensely, "you've got to be doing this on purpose", Bob from Canada ugly.

The only thing I like about it is that it held a contest wherein the fans submitted fancomics of their OCs fighting each other in a tournament, and the winner was determined by a vote of the other people reading the comics. That was very cool and I wish more webcomics did that.

It's one of those things where it just feels too cluttered, or just too... sound and fury, signifying nothing? Tons upon tons of little details in the art, but how many of them matter? Is making each massive spread a where's waldo or interesting details actually useful for more than just set dressing- is this a case where less might be more?

That grousing aside, while the art is from a technical standpoint really strong, it just isn't a sort of art style I enjoy much. Or, at least, not much Abaddon draws fits my tastes.

My alignment is bisexual, and wibbly-wobbly ace-ish maybe?? Who knows.

Oh I have no problem with that.

in fact I'd say that the Naruto world is a good example of what a world of Dragon-blooded would be like if you don't want to use ATLA as an example.

but when I talked about shounen battle stuff, the Exalted community I know of tended to de-emphasize and speak out against it. like there is a certain bias against anything they deem too "four color" or "TTGL"-like while emphasizing a more sociological/political view of Creation, almost as if they think anything too bright or clear-cut would devalue Exalted or something, its weird.

if its the same Exalted discord that I know of, I've been keeping from posting in that. I'm still technically on there but last time I actually communicated with anyone the mod there kept accusing me of having a "combative tone" whatever that meant.

From what I recall most the time the details in the background or a character's attire don't really have any relevance to the plot, but it does make the world depicted in K6BD feel more vibrant and alive to me. Backgrounds aren't bland and boring as if there's only an irrelevant void outside of the protagonists; there's an actual world there instead. I can really appreciate all the little details because of that.

So how many demons is the protagonist of Kill Six Billion Demons up to, by now? A million? Ten million? A billion and a half?

Zero, unless you count her bedding one as killing.

All jokes aside (though it's true she hasn't killed any demons) Allison is one of if not the worst protagonists I've ever experienced. She is completely without agency, every time she tries to act it is basically ignored or makes things worse, and the context of the series the only thing she SHOULD do is just let it all happen and don't try anymore. Philosophically she could become Kill 6 Billion Demons and maybe Do Something, but that'd just be completely buying into the nihilistic bull**** of the villains.... effectively meaning nothing has changed and its all been meaningless in every way that it could matter. If she DOES NOT become Kill 6 Billion Demons, and instead causes great change via peaceful methods, actually succeeds in breaking the cycle of violence, actually succeeds in throwing off the wheel of life...

the fanbase would ****ing revolt because the inherent violence and nihilism of the bad guys, and the world, is what people like about the setting. In order for Allison to become the hero she's supposed to be and make the world better, she has to either become as worse as her enemies, solving nothing, or make the series end in a way that alienates almost the entire fanbase because it's not violent and bloody enough.

Place 1 was right across from work, I could just walk there every day if I wanted. And since I work there, I get to waive 175 in admin fees. So that's awesome.

Place 2 had nicer, larger apartments with better layouts, but was further away (albeit not far, like 10 minutes tops) and had a significantly higher price tag.

Got a third and fourth place to look at tomorrow. One of them was the place I first looked at when I was looking into places to move to in NC. The other is right next to Place 1. So that's a thing.

Well, it's less that, and more that early 40k art was deliberately disgusting and horrifying to look at. This is a demon (https://loginportal.funnyjunk.com/pictures/Warhammer_28df5f_5847907.jpg), so yeah, it's supposed to look ugly, but they also draw a lot of humans like this. This is supposed to be Magnus the Red (https://i.redd.it/i3z9mj86ae971.jpg), a friggen Primarch, before he falls to Chaos and turns into a demon. And here's Leman Russ (https://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f262/SGM-Daly91/Warhammer%2040K/PrimarchLemanRuss-GreatCrusade.jpg), loyalist primarch.

And yeah, that's a major point of 40k, humanity has fallen so far there's not even hope for recovery at this point, but it's still unpleasant to look at, even if there's a good reason for it. Some of it (https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fvignette4.wikia.nocookie.net%2Fwar hammer40k%2Fimages%2F0%2F06%2FCodex_Angels_of_Deat h_Cover2.jpg%2Frevision%2Flatest%3Fcb%3D2012031605 0655&f=1&nofb=1) works really well and I like it (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d9/dc/08/d9dc08fddfb00be7b3ddd2782dbccad2.jpg), and the newer stuff (https://www.belloflostsouls.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ROP-throne-horz.jpg) can be downright amazing, but others... yurgh.

I used to read Girl Genius, because its premise of a bunch of mad scientist running amok all over Europe is cool, but at some point I lost interest. There's a lot going on in that comic and I'd kind of wish the author would focus a bit more on resolving already running plotlines before adding yet even more new stuff. At some point it started feeling too chaotic plot wise for my taste.

Got a third and fourth place to look at tomorrow. One of them was the place I first looked at when I was looking into places to move to in NC. The other is right next to Place 1. So that's a thing.

Place 3 was the original place I was looking at. I think I would've been fine enough with it if I had just gone straight in without thinking further about it; it's right on the road that goes to work, it's close to shopping areas, apartments are nice, etc... but place 1 and 2 are both better options.

Place 1 sounds ideal. You know, for a fact, you will be making the commute to work and back (presumably) five times a week. Making that as little an annoyance as possible really adds up.

Why do people live there?!

I don't think you do know that. Of the three sentences you wrote there, two of them espouse a remarkably egocentric view in context of the conversation. You're ignoring that other people are different from you and you expect them to match you. You get annoyed when you don't. You're clearly not taking other people into consideration for anything other than what they are (or are not) doing for you.

They have stuff to do. Your movie is going to start at a set time regardless. The doors opening a couple minutes earlier isn't going to make the movie start any faster, and there's a reason those doors are closed (and that reason is the other people are doing things that need to be done before the doors open).

Peelee's entire post nails it on the head, but I want to focus in on these sentences.

Bartmanhomer, none of what Peelee says is new. I can think of at least one moment where you've wished for somebody else's good thing to be undone because it inconveniences you, and you've shown a consistent tendency to brush off or ignore attempts to help you improve. That fact that people are willing to outright state they don't trust you should be shocking, as is the fact that people are becoming less willing to give advice. Thankfully people here are being polite about it, there are many places that would be less tolerant.

One of my favorite aspects of living in the north is the weather phenomena known as Ice Crystals. Where it gets so cold the water molecules in the air freeze and it starts getting a little foggy... from all the ice floating in the air. It's like breathing knives. It's like walking through sharp, as a concept. The weather is cold rocks. It's amazing.

And don't forget the looming specter of frostbite! Where it's so cold it burns your skin! And if you get frostbite bad enough you get frostburn, which is permanent patches of discolouration in your skin from where the ice literally just... scarred you, by being too cold. Like if you leave meat in the freezer for too long.

I'm also quite rebellious by nature, am often described as "lazy" for not doing things I was never asked to do or never agreed to do or getting tired or sleeping, and I have to say, if your sole argument for being treated like an authority is "respect your elders, you ungrateful brat" when you don't respect others or... do anything to be grateful form, other than maybe the bare minimum expected of you, that you don't deserve respect or deference. So I'm gonna say 'no.' My ancestors are not smiling at me. At least, statistically not most of them.

Except for how much of my income goes towards rent I absolutely LOVE where I live (both homes on either side of the bridge) with the edge going to the home closer to the Pacific, but the one closer to the bay is nice.

As for everyone here living near here: I’d be delighted and would buy a round of beverages for all y’all.

I have no idea if I count as “neurotypical”, but I did recently take a personality assessment test, it said that I was:
1) more compassionate than most
2) less polite than most
3) far lazier than most
4) less orderly than most
5) moderately enthusiastic
6) almost dead average in assertiveness
7) extremely neurotic compared to most
8) more open to experience than most
9) a lower interest in abstract ideas than most
10) far more volatile than most

The test (which I paid money for) promised that it would “suggest careers”, but it really didn’t.

...Although now I can't help but think of an Issue of Savage Avengers.

For context: After getting the rights for Conan the Barbarian comics back, Marvel(who has a history of publishing Conan comics, and stuff from the Hyborean age is consistently relevant in the modern-day in more magical books) celebrated by having Conan appear in the time-traveling adventure Avengers: No Way Home, the epilog of which revealed that Conan had been accidentally stranded in the modern day in the Savage Lands.

Savage Avengers depicts Conan exploring the modern world and teaming up with various anti-heroes and mystical characters to deal with Kulan Gath, an immortal, time-traveling sorcerer from Conan's time who is... Basically the biggest threat there is to the Earth at this point due to his ability to gain knowledge and mystical power by eating people.

One issue has Conan, somewhere in Mexico, in broad daylight, dispatching a monster born from a homeless person being forcibly merged with an avatar of Shuma-Gorath that was released into the streets for... Reasons?

A woman who had been doing her grocery shopping dropped her bags and ran when the monster appeared, and after killing it Conan calls out to her... And then when she doesn't come back he just grabs a jar of peanut butter out of the bag and starts eating it straight out of the jar while the narration describes how the common food of the modern age would be the envy of kings in his time.

Probably, but it's my nature to be cynical... Or maybe my nurture. sometimes it can be hard to tell what's an inherent trait and what's a learned behavior.

Also, there's a distinct possibility that in at last some cases those people are one and the same: I mean, the reason why quality of life steadily improves with each generation is becuase enough members of the previous generation did their job and yet a loud minority of the previous generations seem... Not happy that they did their job.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people worked their assess off to provide better for their children or grandchildren... Only to become resentful later on for one reason or another.

I know human nature, there is statistically some ancestors who'd be hyper "back in my day" about it on a level today's old people could never hope to reach.

Considering how "back in my day when had to bah blah blah and we liked it, you spoiled kid" is an almost universal, statistically many of my ancestors are thinking that I don't deserve it because I haven't earned it.

...Although now I can't help but think of an Issue of Savage Avengers.

I choose to believe death humbles you such that you realize we're all just humans in the end and we deserve every good thing that happens to us, so long as we don't actively hurt each other.

Or, if you still act like that even after the great equalization of your existence with everyone else, you just get erased.

That's fair, especially since I tend to be optimistic.:smallwink:

They say greatness is planting a tree whose shade you will never sit in.

I doubt your ancestors are like that crotchety old man who thinks you're a terrible person because you got annoyed your Uber is taking too long. Especially when you get further back and find people who went without food more often than not, or lived through the plague, or were witness to the Winged Hussars' cavalry charge or whatever.

They'll probably also be a lot more tolerant than they were in life, given the very high likelihood that they're now related to people they once hated.

Yeah, your probably right, they'd probably look at us as something comparatively utopian and be amazed that we're still trying to figure out ways to improve things even more.

I recommend no longer paying rent/mortgage. It's such a nice feeling to not having that too worry about and feel content that the bank don't own nothin' of yours.

I plan on doing this once further in my career and have determined where I want to settle down long-term. Not forever necessarily, but long enough that investing in a house is worth it.

I respect that option but I think at this point we're maybe getting a bit too close to a serious discussion of topics best left unspoken in this venue. Might be best to change the subject. So a little bit ago I mentioned that I'm a bit obsessed, lately, with the idea of making my own Ahms, and more recently that my brain, without consulting me, had decided that trying to figure out the optimal order to absorb a bunch of clones and embodiments of pure Id?

Yeah.

So this is Ahms.
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/3/38/Amuzu.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/959?cb=20190222205826
Ahms is referred to at various points as an "artificial life form with an AI," an android, and a cyborg. It is unknown if its makeup is entirely mechanical in this form orif it includes organic matter, but it is known that it's capable of biological reproduction from the second form onward and that it is composed of both technology and dark magic.

Ahms was created by Sealas, big bad of the video game Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, to compensate for his own lack of raw power. In its base form, Ahms is a living weapon of MAss destruction rather than a fighter. It shoot and thing go boom.

However, it's also able to upgrade itself based on observations of other entities in combat—increase it's raw power by analyzing the power of others, adapt to better avoid attacks by watching people fight, and increase the power and precision of it's energy blast by absorbing how others use energy.

It can also just flat out absorb people in order to gain their power and techniques... But the way it absorbs people is interesting.

When it absorbs its creator Sealas, they essentially fuse. The resulting creature looks like a fusion of Sealas's body and the form that Ahms was in at the time, slightly Ahms dominant, and after a brief moment of mindlessness Sealas's personality asserts itself s the dominant factor of th collective with Ahms merely contributing knowledge and power.

With every else though, it absorbs two individuals, then forcible fuses them before consuming them entirely, adding their skills and powers to itself(but without absorbing their personality traits) in a process that seems to be fatal to victims. Ahms then transforms into a state that appears as a combination of it's base form and the last to beings that it fused with, with each form being progressively more humanoidhttps://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/c/c3/2nd_Ahms.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/426?cb=20200628121900

form completions's sake, here is Sealas.

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/9/90/Sealas_render.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20201106144133

And their fused form

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/2/25/Fused_Sealas_render.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/763?cb=20200628122420

No, if I could make my own Ahms... I could just fuse with it, but based on the final result of Ahms fusion with Sealas seems to indicate that the form Ahms is in has a factor of the final fused form and I don't want to be a big chonky floaty ball. So, Ahms needs to absorb at least four individuals to ensure that my form fused with it is properly humanoid.

Since this is simply a fantasy that will never actually happen, I decided that the most ethical means of doing this would be approaching the timeline that the third arc of FighterZ's story mode takes place in.

FighterZ's story mode has the plot point of a number of mass clones of both heroes and enemies(who were revived with the dragon balls to take samples) wandering the world. The clones have neither intellect nor emotion and outside of battle they either stand around without emotion or shamble about like zombies but in combat they snap into perfect imitations of the fighters who they were clone from at the time the samples were taken(with the implication being that the samples were all taken very recently.) They are instinctively able to replicate even the most advanced techniques and powers, and while Frieza and Cell claim that their clones are inferior several other fighters note that their ki feels identical, their skills are perfectly matched, and their power levels are dead even with Goku and Tien, in particular, relishing the chance to fight their exact equal.

The exception are the Majin Buu clones, which all take the form of Kid Buu rather than Fat Buu, retain the original's personality(though, as the orignal was effectively mindless...) and while they retain Buu's ability to absorb other entities they just seem to break those entities down for raw power rather than replicating their powers and techniques. They're also more passive than the orignal Buu, mostly just wandering around and picking fights rather than blowing up the entire earth becuase it was there.

Since the clones are mindless, absorbing them is like eating a carrot in terms of ethics of consumption. (In fact, the clones were originally cultivated to sate Android 21's boundless hunger and compulsion to consume powerful people without hurting anyone before they were let loose, so they could be argued to literally be a form of produce.)

It'd be easy to just grab any four clones... But 17 discrete individuals were cloned, and in the third timeline, Android 21 expels the malevolent alter she develops as a result of her hunger and compulsions into an "Evil 21" which being literally an embodiment of pure evil and hunger needs to be destroyed regardless of her sentience for the good of the world.

So that's 18 individuals that be ethically consumed, for a total of 9 posisble transformations of increasingly humanoid nature before the final fusion

And I'm a bit of a completionist and often tempted by the appeal of power.

And, since the process of absorption treats each pair of absorbees like a fusion, the issue of compatibility comes into play: All fusions are more powerful than their components would be added together, but the compatibility of the two fusion components affects how much. To the point that, in the Tournament of power when it became clear that Patora fusion was tournament legal and Team Universe 7 was considering it, it was determined that the best bet would be Androids 17 and 18, twin siblings with similar body types, personalities, and fighting styles, over the much more powerful fighters who were also on the team.

So while it would be very tempting to pair people up two by two from strongest to weakest, or go by established fusions(particularly since Goku and Vegeta Fusions are consistently depicted as just completely overpowering even the strongest of unfused fighters whenever they show up) but... Obviously, things like personality and emotional relationships don't come into play with mindless clones, but would the biological relationship between Goku and Gohan and the influence that Goku had on Gohan's fighting style... Or hell, even the fact that Krillin or Yamcha have highly similar fighting styles due to training under most of the same mentors, make them better Fusion partners for a Goku clone than a Vegeta Clone, even though the Vegeta clones are far more powerful?

Or would Gohan be better off with a Trunks clone? The Trunks clones are based on Future Trunks, so their fighting styles are going to be similar due to future Trunks primarily being trained by his Timeline's Gohan, who despite differing circumstances uses mostly the same techniques as his main timeline counterpart. Furthermore, while not related by blood, they're both first-generation Saiyan human hybrids so their physiology is going to be more similar to each others than to their respective fathers or any of the earthlings.

It's not straightforward to figure out and my brain doesn't seem to understand that this is literally impossible to answer. Or that in practice it'd probably just be grabbing them in whatever order they're found in.

(I know for sure that the Majin Buu clone and Evil 21 are to be paired up and absorbed last. The reason 21 has an uncontrollable hunger and the reason why the Buu clones are flawed but more docile copies is the same: Doctor Gero understood Ki as a science but was ignorant of its spiritual and mystical aspects, so his genetic science just isn't able to cope with the biology of a Majin, who are basically living Chaos Magic. Since their flaws have the same origin but function in opposite ways, as if they each only have a portion of Magiin physiology, I figure combining the clone Buu with Evil 21 should negate the instability causing the uncontrollable hunger.

You ever have one of those moments of "wait, why did they do that" when watching a movie? Or thinking about a movie?

In Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday(Spoilers, there were two more Fridays and then a reboot) after a joint effort by the FBI and the Military seemingly kill Jason in the prolog, they just... Hand his chunks off to an ordinary ME in some podunk down for an official autopsy before declaring him dead.

Not a special Federal Level examiner. And there's no FBI, military, or other government oversite of the examination. Or guards.

Which is... Terribly irresponsible. By tis point in time(we're nine movies into the franchise) it seems to be common knowledge that Jason is a tough son of a bitch with supernatural ability to regenerate his body, is possibly come kind of undead creature, and even when confirmed dead is about to revive himself.

And like, the FBI reacted accordingly. After confirming that Jason was back at his old stomping grounds they had an FBI agent disguised as a promiscuous teenager do the stupid promiscuous teenager thing at the camp and then run him into a trap where a two or three dozen soldiers sourounded him from all sides and riddled his body with gunfire from high caliber pistols, at least two M16s, and at least one combat shotgun. And then blew his ass up with an airstrike.

There is no overkill when it comes to Jason, and these people understood this.

And then... They dropped the ball. I don't think anyone could have predicted that Jason's disembodied heart to start beating which hypnotized the ME into eating it allowing Jason to take over the ME's body*, but with Jason's regenerative and self ressurection abilities it was incredibly stupid to not treat his remains with extreme care until they were confirmed to be absolutely certain of their total destruction. Honestly, since the ME seemed to just be confirming that Jason was dead rather than identifying his remains or studying them scientifically(and like, if they wanted to study his remains scientifically, maybe figure out how his ability to regenerate and reanimate works like they said they did in the next movie, you'd think he'd have been taken to a federal facility and not seemingly the closest ME office to the camp) so the autopsy seems unnecessary. Just... Cremate his ass and be done with it.

Or better yet, soak his chunks in 95.5% pure alcohol, then pack his chunks into a wooden crate full of thermite, poor the alcohol he was soaking in on top, seal the crate, place the crate into an industrial blast furnace, cover the crate in gasoline, then seal the furnace and turn it up to full blast and just... Leave it running at full capacity till either it runs out of fuel or breaks. Take no chances. There is no such thing as overkill here.

And yes, I know that if they did the smart thing then there woulnd't be a movie. That doesn't mean that their dropping the ball doesn't bug me.

*Well, I mean, this was the movie where it was established that Freddy and Jason existed in the same world, and I don't see Springwood getting away with the cover-ups they were doing without federal support, so it's certainly posisble that the Federal Government acknowledges the existence of ghosts, but still.

And my parents still do like 8 per day - and that's while retired. Don't ask how many did they drink when they were working (and still smoking).

Is this what it's like when I talk about my stuff? Is this what it's like on the outside?

Wordle is, as it turns out, Wordstermind.

Got today's, but it did take all six guesses to work it out. So I'm 1/1 so far.

So, what does an umbrella become when there's too many holes in it for it to keep you dry in the rain?

Not joking. That question got brought up in last month's issue of Venom and I've been thinking about it ever since.

Improper. If that's your only umbrella it would be better to get wet than suffer the indignity.

Genuinely? Yes. Your stuff is so dense and relies on so many references and specific details, it's as indecipherable to someone who doesn't already know what's going on as that wordle stuff is to you.

And yet...

Worthless. No, seriously, there aren't any name for a dull knife,.a broken chair or a car that won't start. It's just a broken [X].

If I don't provide references and specific details, it leads to misunderstandings.

I apologize, but this is more of a philosophical question than a practical one. I have a recurring problem where I either give too much context or not enough. Still... I don't know how to fix that beyond trial and error. Sorry.

The context used an umbrella as a metaphor: Once something has been altered to the point where it no longer meets the basic definition of itself, it stops being that thing and starts being something else.

And my weird-ass brain decided that the question of "So... When an umbrella stops being an umbrella, what is it."

Metal sticks articulated together with fabric stretches between them, that is torn or bent.

There's no name for that, because nobody cares about such an object.

Edit: To be clear, the object "this umbrella" belongs to the obtological category "umbrella" which itself belongs inside "tool" which itself belongs inside "things". By being broken, the object leaves the first two categories to end up in the category "broken umbrella" within "things".

Dunno how many of y'all play, but I damn near fell out of my chair when the second word got colored in.

Wordle 222 3/6

🟦⬜⬜⬜⬜
⬜🟧🟧🟧🟧
🟧🟧🟧🟧🟧

Oh no, the Wordle. It's here too! Seems like this has infested much of the internet now.

Weary and mound seem like good standard start guesses every time. Ten different letters, eight of which are vowels, that can be checked right away. Am I supposed to play Wordle in hard mode or normal mode?

Weeeeeeeellllll, a little, yes, only now imagine there's also a lengthy paragraph or two about Wordle tactics too. I'm not saying that's bad, because this is the random banter thread after all and you're clearly not the only one who's into all the DC/Marvel superhero/comics stuff, but for those not familiar with those materials (such as yours truly) those posts tend to be difficult to follow.

The term is 'broken umbrella', or from another perspective 'rubbish', 'scrap', or 'reusable materisls'. Nothing big or fancy, either it still falls under the first category, or it falls into the other where the term depends on your intent.

But that had already been covered, so I thought I'd take it in another direction. Plus I'd rather not have to suffer another three pages of dense Marvel discussion for a little while.

Yes, and that's the conundrum that you have. You're referencing a body of work that is so convoluted and labyrinthine that the amount of detail needed to understand goes beyond what a casual observer is going to be willing to digest.

Like, being honest, whenever I see one of those posts? I basically go "ah, a big list of names that I have neither context for nor interest in, and details that require ever increasing explanations to give context for." It's just not something that I can really stick in my head in one sitting.

Asking genuinely: How long did it take you to gather all of that Marvel information? Because... that's a representation of the time needed to really understand all of what you're talking about, there's just so much information.

Like, I could go on for aaaaaages about the Halo universe (as Zodi can well attest), but unless you were also invested or had a lot of time put in, I guarantee that no matter how simply I put it, putting enough information in to provide context to what I want to rant about will make most peoples' eyes just glaaaaaze over.

So, being frank, it's not likely to be something you're ever going to be able to get anyone interested in at all unless they're already invested in Marvel to some degree.

Au contraire! If it is dull by design, chances are high it will be called a table knife, butter knife or something to that effect.

or a car that won't start

Huh. In my mother tongue, there is a word for those. It'd translate to something like carwreck (but that one's got a different meaning in English).
