Just thinking about combat and out of combat uses for this one and trying to come up with random scenarios or fun uses.

If you are a Lore Bard standing on a shore can you animate a row boat some Orcs are riding to shore in? They aren't "wearing" it and it should be about the size of a huge object.

How about a carriage? It isn't worn or carried.....unless the horse IS wearing its gear....

Statues could be fun. Small bridges are probably too tied down to accomplish much....oh, the fun you could have in a blacksmith's shop!

Any other ideas?

5th-level transmutation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 120 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
Objects come to life at your command. Choose up to ten nonmagical objects within range that are not being worn or carried. Medium targets count as two objects, Large targets count as four objects, Huge targets count as eight objects. You can’t animate any object larger than Huge. Each target animates and becomes a creature under your control until the spell ends or until reduced to 0 hit points.
As a bonus action, you can mentally command any creature you made with this spell if the creature is within 500 feet of you (if you control multiple creatures, you can command any or all of them at the same time, issuing the same command to each one). You decide what action the creature will take and where it will move during its next turn, or you can issue a general command, such as to guard a particular chamber or corridor. If you issue no commands, the creature only defends itself against hostile creatures. Once given an order, the creature continues to follow it until its task is complete.

An animated object is a construct with AC, hit points, attacks, Strength, and Dexterity determined by its size. Its Constitution is 10 and its Intelligence and Wisdom are 3, and its Charisma is 1. Its speed is 30 feet; if the object lacks legs or other appendages it can use for locomotion, it instead has a flying speed of 30 feet and can hover. If the object is securely attached to a surface or a larger object, such as a chain bolted to a wall, its speed is 0. It has blindsight with a radius of 30 feet and is blind beyond that distance. When the animated object drops to 0 hit points, it reverts to its original object form, and any remaining damage carries over to its original object form.
If you command an object to attack, it can make a single melee attack against a creature within 5 feet of it. It makes a slam attack with an attack bonus and bludgeoning damage determined by its size. The DM might rule that a specific object inflicts slashing or piercing damage based on its form.
At Higher Levels. If you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, you can animate two additional objects for each slot level above 5th.

I had an illusionist wizard that had the background of a gambler. He'd animate Platinum pieces to attack his enemies (or silver coins if dealing with devils/lycanthropes).

My mind immediately went to making the contents of a bookcase distract the librarian while you sneak off with another book.
In a situation where the silverware is expected, go for the table and the chairs, instead. Sitting on a chair is not the same as wearing or carrying it.
During a chase scene, have the market stalls come alive and obstruct your opponents, or, if indoors, have a cabinet or closet body slam someone you dislike.
There are as many options as there are things you can call objects.
In a pinch, take a bag of caltrops and animate the individual caltrops. Instants swarm of allies to provide cover/a distraction.

EDIT: Oh, just drop random stuff from your backpack and have that go to town. I wouldn't be surprised if animated rope gets a bonus to grappling attempts if you sell it well enough to the DM.

I like animating Silver Pieces and ball bearings.

Enter woodcarver's tools. Make a bunch of little marionettes, the creepier the better. Invite your enemies to a "tea party".

Do not take no for an answer.

Animate the artisans' tool set a lot of PCs carry around for no reason other than background. Smiths' tools, cooking utensils, brewer's supplies. Maybe you could kill someone with a healer's kit.

Best sentence I've read all day.

Thats my new rp goal.

Have your coat kill someone.
Animate a rug to suffocate someone.
Animate your rope to climb the building & pull you up behind it.
Make an evil slaying sword named Nightblood.
Gift your enemies a statue...
Gift your enemies a necktie...
Animate your wagon.
Add propellers to your wagon.

I just remembered...

Way back in the day, 1976. Original D&D with Greyhawk and Blackmoor. The party Thief found a poison gas trap on a treasure chest, the Magic-User cast animate objects and sent it down the hall where we knew a bunch of orcs were. Good times.

A poor man's Flying Carpet with a mundane rug.

Or an even poorer one with a collection of ten rocks.

drawbridge, portcullis, the ceiling / rafters / roof, doors, Locks, siege weapons, unworn suits of armor, trees, chains, ropes, ship's rudder, statues, wagons, treasure chests, furniture, blankets, walls, rocks, bricks, etc

This is one of those spells that is only limited by your imagination and the DM's rulings.

Bad guys taking potshots at you w/ a ballista or canon - animate it and have fun. Need to get into that fortified compound - animate the rocks that form that bit of wall and presto - you've got an open door. Badguys scaling the walls with grappling hooks - animate the hooks, wait for max folks on the line and toss them off. Pirates are coming to get you - animate their rudder, steer them where ever you want. Evil cultist sacrificing a virgin on an alter - animate the alter, have it run off with the virgin still tied to it ...

Some of the more unusual / interesting things we have seen animated:

A Giant’s Bed in the Facing the Giants module. Party used it like a Vehicle / combat platform smashing through the fortress.

Animating lab equipment in a Wizards lab with all manner or odd vials and liquids flying around.

Curse of Strahd: One PC had been collecting Blinsky’s the whole adventure and unleashed them on Strahd in the final battle yelling out something about Is no fun is no Blinksy.

Fighting Slavers our Cleric Animated their chains and whips to exact vengeance.

I think alot of people, just use Silver coins. I like to have a quiver of 20 silvered bolts, but that's just for fun of it.
