Fighter's have may roles.

Tanks: High AC protect the other characters.
Bodyuards: Protect a specific character.
Plus more.

So two things.
1) What other roles are thier.
2) How valuable or even possible are the roles. For example how would the two roles make sure the monster attacks them.

Tripper/Disarmer: Uses reach weaponry to stop the enemies from moving.

Also, if the tank can go Knight (PHB2) long enough to get Knight's Call, then they can force some enemies to attack them.

Hmm, Emperor Demonking strikes again, eh?

Throw in two fighters into the mix, one high AC, meatsheildy type, there to deal damage and to stop anyone breakable taking damage. The other? An Archer-fighter, there to throw arrows flying everywhere, and to make all enemy spellcasters make concentration checks.

In a 5 men party playing in a Hack n' Slash campaing, 2 Fighter is simply awesome!

Just get one to be a Triper and the other a AoO Monkey. They will just Own everything on their size.

Or, Triper and a Power Attacker. The enemy falls, the fighter bring his 2handed deathbringer to the fray... Simply owesome!

Tanks: High AC protect the other characters.
High AC alone helps no-one. Enemies will just walk around the character and chop down the squishy wizard. A Fighter who focuses on boosting his AC at the expense of everything else is just a moving terrain feature. Combat Reflexes and Stand Still or Improved Trip help, but that's already two feats into an AoO-ape.

Whivch is why you shouldn't play a Fighter for that role. Play a Knight.

A 'large' or 'powerful build' fighter with the knockback / shock trooper feats does fairly well. Go TWF and PrC into Dervish for added mayhem.

Fighter's aren't particularly good at that. You need to be able to draw hate and have battlefield control. Like a Knight, or a Trip fighter. Or even better, a reach fighter with Stand Still.

If a chokepoint can be found/made, then a tank can be useful. However, this is pretty rare.
