This is the voting thread for the eighteenth 5e base class contest Contest XVIII: Expect a Low Margin of Terror (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?641461-D-amp-D-5e-Base-Class-Contest-XVIII-Expect-a-Low-Margin-of-Terror-II-(Submission-Thread))!

The rules are simple. Vote for your top three picks, in order. You can't vote for yourself. A number 1 vote is worth 3 points, a number 2 vote is worth 2, and a number 3 vote is worth one. You can (and are encouraged) to vote even if you didn't submit an entry this time around.

You can also suggest or vote on what you would like the next contest's theme to be. Currently in the suggestion box are Dragons, Heroes from Myths, Other Media, and Breakfast Cereal Mascots, and Not In Kansas Anymore, but don't feel as though you need to limit your suggestions to those themes; a larger pool means more options to vote on next time. I'm also going to allow votes for any theme that hasn't been used for at least six contests (so right now that adds The Elements, Doesn't Meet Expectations, Chill Out, Remix Mastery, Magic Without Slots, It's Time for Time, Blast from the Past, Signature Creation, and Hybrid Vigor). If you missed a contest or had another idea for a previous theme, you may get your chance again!

Themes:

The voting period will be three weeks, ending at the end of the day on April 3rd. The following day I will tally these results and declare a winner. Note: I anticipate being unable to post directly on April 4th due to travel. The contest voting will stay open until I am able to call it; if you get your vote in before I declare a winner, your vote is valid. If I can post April 4th I will, however.

For the curious, the tiebreakers I will be using are:

1st tiebreaker is whether both participants voted. If one did not, they lose the tie.
2nd tiebreaker is total number of 1st place votes. The entry which got more 1st place votes will win the tie.
There is no 3rd tiebreaker. If both entrants voted and both entries reached their total score with the same number of 1st place votes, the tie will stand.

1st Place: The Monster by BerzerkerUnit. It's a solid-looking class that fits the theme well.
2nd Place: The Coward by sengmen. This was a close one, but in the end I just had slightly fewer issues with the Monster.
3rd Place: The Cavernbrood by MoleMage. There's nothing really wrong with it, just that I thought the Monster fit the theme better.

I'd also like to ask all those who have an incomplete submission finish it off -- there's definitely potential here, contest or not.

I didn't get around to crunching the balance, so these are based on theme and general feeling.

1. Dreadsoldier. I love the build and burn as a concept and also enjoy the abilities that frighten your own allies to be more effective.
2. Dreadwalker. You guys probably know by now that I am a sucker for variant systems, and this one seems especially interesting to me because your gameplay changes over the course of adventuring.
3. Coward It was a tossup between this and the Monster. I like the idea of getting benefits from having a negative condition enough to tip the scale a bit.

Theme: Abstaining for now.

Voting seems to still be open, there's still time if you haven't done it yet!

Well it's late on the 5th but it's still the 5th. We didn't have any last-second votes, so it's time to call it!

Third place goes to MoleMage, with the Caevrnbrood! Not quite as Terror-influenced as the other entries but if you wanna creep up on someone and mutate into a subterranean thing, this is your class.

Second place is for Old Harr MTX's Dreadwalker. Wear your fear on your sleeve. Use it as a spell point system. Get more powerful the lower your grip on sanity. Basically, if you were an investigator in an eldritch horror story, you could just use this class.

And our grand winner is Breccia with the Dreadsoldier! Unlike most of the others in this contest, the Dreadsoldier is fear. Why be afraid of the dark when you can make the dark soil its armor just by menacing it?

We had kind of an eclectic mix of theme requests in the voting this time, but Doesn't Meet Expectations is the only one that got two votes so it's getting posted as soon as it's done getting formatted. Good job everyone, and good luck in the next one!
