Should fire giants be subject to heat exhaustion? Like from running around in full-plate on a hot humid sunny day? Of course they can get tired; that's not what I'm asking.
Can a frost giant run around naked in a howling arctic blizzard without effect?

Fire Resistance 4 is sufficient to make a creature immune to heatstroke and heat exhaustion (Sandstorm, p15). Cold Resistance 4 is sufficient to make a creature immune to hypothermia and Frostbite (Frostburn, p10). Note that it actually takes 6 points of Resistance to be completely immune to environmental damage though. Edit: But Resistance 5 is sufficient to be immune to the effects of all but Unearthly Heat/Cold.

For Frost Giants, yeah. The Cold subtype (which Frost Giants have) gives them immunity to any cold damage, so they never suffer any environmental effects due to cold. Same with the Fire subtype (which Fire Giants have) and fire damage.

Frostburn spells this out more explicitly:

"A character with a spell or effect granting cold resistance applies his resistance to both lethal and nonlethal damage from cold temperatures." (p. 9)

Sandstorm has similar wording about heat damage:

"A character with a spell or effect granting resistance to fire applies this resistance to both lethal and nonlethal damage from hot temperatures." (p. 15)

So, yep, under normal conditions Fire Giants don't get heatstroke, and Frost Giants don't get frostbite.

Fire immunity even grants immunity to the heat stroke spell per that spell's text, so you can't even magically give a fire giant heatstroke.

It does not, however, protect from Heat Death. Though it does take all the sting out of a successful save, assuming that you're a living being.
