Rules for Random Banter

1. Spam. For RB, one-word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and browbeat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single-line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first-page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait for 12 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Ah, that'd explain why she was able to deal with the Chameleon so effectively. She's dealt with ****ing weirdos before.

I think that by "spirit" you mean structure or shape? Because a ship doesn't have a "spirit".

Yeah what Keltest says below. I do not mean the structure or shape, because that is a material aspect. It is the spirit of the matter. The Argo will always be the Argo, even as they replace pieces of it over the years. Because it's The Argo.

I assume by spirit Zodi means something like "the significance we as people put to the idea of the thing rather than any intrinsic property of the physical materials."

Yeah, that.

Actually, that happened before May worked for Howard.

When May doesn't have health issues, like she did in Peter's earlier years, she's just kind of a badass.

In agreement here. Physically people aren't even objects, they are processes. Everything that makes something alive is a series of unbalanced chemical equations, including thinking.

If you change the process you change the person, which is why anti-depressants and dieting work. A chemical that changed all the processes that make a person would make a different person more then changing the parts (which are interchangeable at the molecular level.)

DNA isnt like legos either. You cant just magically take one bit out, put in the part you want, then have it come out how you intend. Its all one unit. You change the DNA, you change everything. Every cell, everything controlled by DNA.

Plenty of these changes wont be obvious, or indeed meaningful. But they will be there.

Yeah, because you're preserving the structure of the assemblage of things we call The Argo. Also, why are talking about Jason's ship, now?

I assume by spirit Zodi means something like "the significance we as people put to the idea of the thing rather than any intrinsic property of the physical materials."

So, identity by consensus, then? If so we could end up with situations where someone convinces a lot of people that this other ship over there is actually Theseus's ship, even though Theseus never set foot on it, and if enough people believes him, it'd become "Theseus's ship"? That seems wrong.

Keltest
2022-03-16, 12:26 PM
I mean, if their belief is based on the idea that it is a ship that Theseus used then sure, theyre "wrong", but if its identified as the Ship of Theseus by people, then thats what it is, even if the basis for that identification is wildly misunderstood.

What's in a name, etcetera etcetera. The idea of the ship as a singular unit doesnt have any basis in physics or chemistry or anything, its purely a construct of the human mind. If the ship gets some salt or bird poop on it, that salt or poop isnt part of the ship because we said it isnt, whereas the paint is part of the ship because we said it is.

If it sounds arbitrary, thats because it kind of is. It's based on what we want to think of it as, not some intrinsic property of it that will exist regardless of us.

Heck, heres another example: Sue the dinosaur. Her identity as "Sue" is not something she had while alive, it was given to her strictly by people. The living entity that was the dinosaur no longer exists. But we still call her Sue, because thats what we think of her as.

DNA isnt like legos either. You cant just magically take one bit out, put in the part you want, then have it come out how you intend. Its all one unit....you seem to have forgotten that we're talking about a work of comic book science that may in fact be literal magic.

The only effect the serum has on the mind, the memories, the emotions, the experiences, the decisions... The part of the person that is you is that it's running on better hardware. You think better, process information better, and form memories better going foreward but everything you were, psychologically and emotionally, before taking the serum is preserved. If anything, you'll be more yourself going forward because the improved software means that your mind won't degrade any further than it already has.

And thus. The processes related to thought, memory, emotion, and so on... are all either unchanged, or changed in ways that do not sacrifice the previous self.

Keltest
2022-03-16, 12:45 PM
Rater, I don't think you have a very firm grasp of the implications of upgrading a brain to run on "better hardware." Making somebody smarter, think faster, have better reflexes, these are all fundamental parts of your being and personality. You can't just "upgrade " someone with no changes like that.

You're assuming that the Serum changes everything instead of just what needs to be repaired or altered. If it changed everything than everyone who ever got the serum would look and act exactly the same.

Not even remotely. When you go on a run your personality gets happier, stress effects you less. When you don't eat you get snappish and hangry. These things are true for every life form, but we don't pretend that the change in chemical function makes us all identical.

If you and I did steroids together we would have different outcomes, they would still be fundamentally altering who we are. As long as it leaves the memories alone there is going to be variation in the output because the experience is the only essential thing to a person.

Life is essentially inessential. The two most stable components are memory and DNA, both of which get modified, corrupted and lost over time.

The two most stable components are memory and DNA, both of which get modified, corrupted and lost over time. And memory, the part that's important to your fundamental identity, is permenantly preserved from the moment you take the serum going forward. Unless you suffer critical brain damage or someone deliberately tampers with your memory, you'll never forget anything ever again and any memories you from from getting the serum onward will be accurate. (memories you already have won't degrade any more than they already have.)

Were talking about something from a comic book. The comic book is pretty clear that Steve is fundamentally the same person with or without the Serum as is everyone who got the serum or a stable attempt at recreating the serum.

You can't argue with the source material and say that it's wrong.

In Japan there is the Kinkaku-Ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. It has stood for centuries. It has also been burned down around two to three times. Even though it's been rebuilt, it is still the Kinkaku-Ji, because it is still the building.

I'll admit I searched for "what is the name of Theseus' ship" and got given the name Argo so that's my bad.

Identity by consensus is part of it, yeah. If you did do that, that'd be pretty manipulative... but then, look at all the people who claim to have the bones of such and such saint. This is something humanity does a lot, and it isn't necessarily wrong to do it. Charlatan's do it all the time, but so do people who are doing it for perfectly reasonable reasons (like with the Kinkaku-Ji).

So yeah, I think it's the intent of the people.

It's worse than that, you have to make the same changes to the DNA in every cell. It's all spaghetti coded too, which makes it horrible to work out what effect any one change has.

Except that if someone in 2, 000 gets my femur and claims it was Albert Einstein's, no matter how many people believe it and call it "Einstein's femur", that bone was never inside Einstein's body, which is what these people are saying by calling it that. There are just a lot of people who are wrong. And if it is possible for the consensus to be wrong about the identity of a thing, then identity is not decided by consensus.

I'm not familiar with this particular building, but I'm guessing it represent a Thing. The building is not the Thing, but just represents the Thing. A Thing being an important concept, collection of culture/religious values, an ideal or something else that's important but is not a physical object itself. That the rebuilt Kinkaku-Ji looks exactly the same as the old one and is presumably built in the exact same place helps connect the new Kinkaku-Ji to what the old Kinkaku-Ji represents, but is not necessary. In principle, you could build an entirely different structure in a completely different place and have that be the Kinkaku-Ji just as long as it represents the same Thing. The meaning people assign to the Kinkaku-Ji makes it the Kinkaku-Ji, not the physical structure.

But building in the same place and in the same shape helps a lot to make that connection.

That's my take on it, anyway.

For what it's worth, whenever I do any kind of exercise that's more than a few minutes of light cardio I feel like crap. If I feel good it's because I'm happy that I was physically able to do something so physically intense or because I think/hope it's worth it.

A nice brisk walk feels good, but anything more than that...

...I miss being able to walk on a treadmill at moderate speed for half an hour and then hurt less than when I started.

Do you think it fair to accuse a celebrity of the crimes that person allegedly committed which happened years ago and come forward to make a documentary to expose the celebrity when that celebrity has been deceased more than a decade ago? I just want to hear your opinion.

Sure, but they'll be able to identify it as a specific femur that people know and collectively recognize by that name. The reasoning for naming it that specific name are immaterial.

Last week television cameras were trained on someone saying “The people of San Francisco deserve…” and in the background was a drip from a leak from the ceiling to the floor of a courtroom entrance way. Because of how much water needed to be shut off to so many areas of the building we just set up tarps and buckets above the ceiling and I had to come in Saturday to replace the pipe.

Still sore.

Monday on leaving my wife at dark o’clock in the morning she (very briefly) kissed me on the lips for the first time in about 19 years, I then went to the hospital to visit my beloved roommate and watched her walk (with a walker) for the first time since the large tumor in her torso was removed days earlier. She cried while walking (happy tears she said).

While I was at the hospital she fell asleep for about five minutes and snored a bit, then she woke and told me that she dreamt of walking to her dog (which now lives with her ex-boyfriend of many years) that I was holding.

“It was so vivid” she said of her dream.

Today she’ll be transferred from the hospital where she had the surgery to a new one with a rehabilitation clinic where they’ll work on her too numb knee for a couple of weeks until she may walk up the stairs to our home.

I’ll be leaving work early and delivering some medicine that’s in our refrigerator to her today.

Even though I saw her only a couple of days ago I miss her, but I also fear seeing her as it’s saddening to see her suffer.

This is boderline solipsistic. People thinking that an object is the same than another object does not make it so. Objects have an objective reality.

If these people, believing the femur to be Einstein extracted his genetic material from it (dunno if you can do that with 2, 000 year old bones, if not assume future-science) to get some idea of what Albert Einstein was likew they'd be wrong. Because Albert Einstein was a person with an objective existence that doesn't care what the people of two thousand years later think.

I'm still not clear what you mean by the thing's spirit.

I'll trust you're not just being obtuse, and try my best to explain what I mean. Because firstly, it wasn't built exactly the same, and even if it was, would it be "correct" to say it is the same building, even though all the material components were destroyed by fire? By your understanding, it would not.

But okay, lets explain this. Think of something that means something. The Statue of Liberty, for example. That construct is symbolic of certain ideals and beliefs. If it were to be destroyed and rebuilt, or repaired over time due to weathering and stuff, would it no longer be the Statue of Liberty? Of course it would, because it still stands for those things! The material form of it has changed, but the feelings it evokes and the symbolism it imparts are the same. It is still the same thing as it always was.

While this is true, it ultimately has nothing to do with this discussion? No one could argue, for example, that a model of the Statue of Liberty is the true statue. Just as someone who made a random boat and called it Theseus's' Ship would just be a model. Sure, people can convince people that it is, and maybe within the general human consciousness it IS, but ultimately it will never be that, because it didn't do the things Theseus's Ship did.

...I watched that movie for the first time blind in middle school. I know the knights who say ni and I know the just a flesh wound bit but otherwise hadn't a clue what was what.

Yes, it would. The material does not matter. The structure does. If a building is destroyed and you reuse the blueprints to make the same building you have not built another building, you have rebuilt it.

But what about objects that have no meaning? The table next to me stands for nothing, no one has any attachment to it, if it's damaged in some way, I'll get another one and forget about it. But it still exists. Existence cannot rest on a thing having a special significance for people because things exist even if no one is aware of them. Pluto is the same thing now than it was before it was discovered.

So you agree that the meaning it holds for people is irrelevant then? If there were indeed a ship that Theseus owned, then no other ship is Theseus's ship even if people then start associating some other boat with Theseus's deeds.

I don't believe they used the same blueprints for it.

I mean, that's your thoughts on the table. I care about my dead couch because it's my first couch ever, so it has meaning to me. People can easily find meaning in everything. If I had the couch repaired, it'd be the same old couch though, just repaired. Ultimately however they both are "my couch" and not the same couch. Which is an interesting thought thinking on it.

Not even remotely. The meaning people hold for it still matters.

I wonder if there's a tension here. If Einstein's femur has the same structure as another femur, whatever structure means for you, then would that other femur also be Einstein's femur? If not: why is the history of the femur so crucial to its ontology while the history of the building isn't?

Parts of it sure, though when my MGB caught fire it was rather more cinematic!

My beloved roomie has called herself “your tragic heroine roommate”, and she’s not wrong.

She just called in tears while I was driving to the clinic she’s trapped at until the 30th, complaining about the food!

A small thing, but after what she’s been through already it’s insult to injury!

She’s charming, honest and kind, but also possibly cursed.

“The luckiest unlucky person”.

Suppose it might be a problem for somebody with a very strong attachment to a seasoning style + how it's normally presented, but I'd expect such a person to be a 'picky eater' at best and possibly have an outright eating disorder if they can't eat taco-seasoned items on anything other than a taco shell. Otherwise it's just.. taco seasoned chicken served with a grain product, which is exactly what taco seasoned chicken served with tortillas is? Texture of the meal obviously would be somewhat different, but making a pasta dish from something like chicken - salsa - penne - taco seasonings isn't any weirder than chicken - tomato sauce - penne - italian seasonings.

Me too @Anymouswizard, me too.

And for what it’s worth once (before I gained my weight back) my roomie did say that I “looked dashing” (though I’m sure not as much as Peelee!).

Visited my beloved roommate at a new hospital that she was moved to yesterday, she can move her ankle now so hopefully she may walk again sooner rather than later (that her knee has been numb and she can’t stand or walk for days after her torso tumor surgery is yet another prank played by fate).

I miss her already, it’s been a surprise to find myself smitten like a youngster again in my 50’s, but it’s much the same as then, both good and bad.

Saw “Licorice Pizza” with her weeks ago, which means that I’ve seen three new movies this last year (the others were “Cruella” and “The French Dispatch”) which is more than I’ve seen in over a decade, all were really good!

Went to my neighborhood bar and just had soda (without whiskey) in my month-plus-some-more-days pledge to abstain from alcohol (which I do every year around this time, and also so my roommate has at least one sober friend who may drive at a moments notice), obviously avoiding the bar would help with that, but I went to tell an old friend of my roomie’s how she’s doing and to speak to a (very regal and striking) older women (yes, even older than me!), who works as a medical advocate, seemed to go well.

Like some kind of wholesome Conan the Barbarian who solves problems by talking to people instead of inflicting violence on them. That could work, depending on the execution of the concept.

But if I become, or permenantly bond with, a symbiote powerful enough to be considered a symbiote dragon no arrow will be able to permanently kill me and with repeated controlled exposure I shall become immune to any special properties Hilbert's arrow might possess.

Not quite sure how to find a way around the vulnerability to light-aligned cosmic power though but realistically how often am I gonna encounter that?

Until Hilbert's arrow gets its own powerful enough symbiote.:smalltongue:

An arrow bonded to a symbiote does nothing until someone fires it.

...Also, if I've developed resistance from controlled exposure adding a symbiote doesn't change that.

Edit: Also, you'd be surprised what the Arms Race Gap regarding Symbiote Powers is like. Generally speaking, if another symbiote is stronger than you you're not gonna be able to surpass them without outside help and even then...

Like, Venom's been powered up several times, sometimes at the same time as Carnage, but is always just weak enough against Carnage that he can't be defeated without multiple people teaming up and/or using specialized weapons.

Carnage has likewise been powered up all to hell, and yet is no match for Toxin... How has never been powered up and has only had three hosts. (Symbiotes get more powerful every time they change hosts.)

If I get the head start the arrow would never be able to catch up.

A powerful enough symbiote can, why not.

Most symbiotes prefer to use themselves as weapons. Or, baring that, a host with natural weapons or martial arts training.

A symbiote would only shoot an arrow made of itself.

Most symbiotes also won't take a host that can't move on it's own.

Also the arms race gap I've mentioned.

That's why we make the arrow an animated sentient arrow.

I'm like 80% sure an arrow has natural weapons.

So clearly the solution is to attach motorised wheels to the arrow. Then we've pretty much filled all your criteria.

I mean, if you got to that point and somebody really wanted to kill you, they'd better be a Strategist potentially with the World Breaker's Hand. They're pretty much all able to turn your symbiote off for long enough to matter, the latter to just remove it from existence with a wave of their hand.

And that's after the Strategists were deported from being universally Imperator-level. The issue with a fictional arms race is that eventually somebody can find a way around it, and 'sent straight to nonexistence' is one of the few things hard to build an immunity to.

Of course then the Strategist dies of having a bookshelf fall on them. But they'll be back in a bit.

I mean, you can protect from being reality warped out of existence by 1: Having some vital piece of Cosmic something-something within you* or 2: Being a reality warper yourself.

Assuming that I go with the "reasonable" version of becoming a dragon, which is to say my "starting" condition is that I'm bonded to a weapon V bio-suit,, something cloned from The Grendel, a symbiote dragon that attacked Earth back in... Well, people confused it for Grendel coming back for another round and when Thor showed up to fight it they thought he was Beowulf.

Apparently in the Marvel Universe the story of Beowulf as we know it is the result of the real Beowulf fighting Grendel and Grendel's mother being combined and conflated with Thor fighting The Grendel and its "sister", who is unnamed but in the modern any answers to the Alias "Big Mother."

Anyway, that gets the job started and, as a bonus, weapon V bio-suits are engineered to be either mindless, fully subservient to their hosts, or both, and are infected with a targeted psychic virus hat does some kind of psychic surgery that partially severs them from the symbiote hivemind. IT's still part of the Hivemind and gains all the benefits(and can be sensed by other symbiotes) but can't be controlled or influenced by other members of the hive mind.

...But... While Weapon v symbiotes are a lot stronger than symbiotes that aren't derived from a symbiote Dragon(the orignal Sym-Soldiers could completly ignore being sprayed with napalm and weapon v suits are meant to be stronger) they're not dragons themselves.

In Absolute Carnage, when the Carnage symbiote was revived as "Dark Carnage" by merging it with the remains of the Grendel, Cletus was able to turn it back into a Symbiote Dragon, and make it much stronger, by devouring symbiote Codices and other Symbiotes... But Carnage consumed thousands of codices and dozens of symbiotes to get to that point.

There are definitely enough codices to go around following King in Black... But they're mostly in New York City, London, Hong Kong, Wakanda, and Krakoa, the main points where Knull's invasion forces were strongest. New York City's out because the marvel Us has severely cracked down on aliens and has given the Alchemex Copreration carte blanch to attack and detain anyone associated with symbiotes for experiments. If I can get to Doctor Steve first and convince him to help me I might be able to use Alchemex resources but otherwise...

London and Hong Kong, meanwhile, have much more regulated Supers with state-sponsored and mystically guided teams. Combine that with my American accent and inability to speak any form of Chinese and I'd stick out like a sore thumb. Also, as far as I know, no supers got infected in Hong Kong and only the one super got infected in London and she's a minor powered nobody.

Wakanda... Yeah, I'd get caught at the border and get my ass whooped.

So that leaves Krakoa... There are two ways I could get in... 1: Swim-up Dead Mutant's Cove, the one area o the island where they can't set up ocean security because the waves are too choppy and hope my symbiote can protect me from being crushed, drowned, or smashed against razor-sharp rocks... But someone already did that so they're gonna be wise to that trick

2: Join ORCHIS, an Anti-Mutant organization secretly run by Sapient Sentinels who think that sentinels are oppressed because Mutants won't let the sentinels kill them and because humans destroy sentinels every time the Sentinels become self-aware and decide to enslave humans. They think They're the Geth but really they're just Skynet. They're based in a space station orbiting the sun that was originally built by Tny Stark but they stole it using legal Loopholes.

ORCHIS has a few things that makes it viable 1: There is, or at least once, a Krakoan gate on the station. It's not known if ORCHIS destroyed it after discovering it. 2: They have multiple copies of the bodies of various members of X-Force. X-Force keeps attacking the station, being killed by Nimrod, and then respawning on Krakoa and trying again. 3: Abigail Brand, a hybrid of alien and mutant and head of SWORD, has betrayed both her fellow mutants and common sense by joining ORCHIS in secret. She has a plan for making the "Earthers" a major player in the Galactic Scene, but it's very convoluted, involves screwing over Krakoa, and she's a dumbass if she thinks that ORCHIS won't kill her the second she's not useful to them considering that she's 50% Homo s superior and ORCHIS is devoted to 100% extermination of all traces of Homo s superior.

(She claims to dislike Krakoa because they only know her as Brand, a reference to her mutant power... Except that' the name she gave them.)

And Brand has a Codex. she was possessed by a Symbiote when the Symbiote Imperium attacked the SWORd station in Spider-Man and the X-Men #4

If I can get to the ORCHIs station, I could have my symbiote nibble on some of the X-Force corpses in the morgue or afterward, my Symbiote would have Mutant DNA, so I should register as being accompanied by a mutant and thus be able to walk through the gates. Once I get what I need, I steal anything of value I can get away with from the ORCHIS Base and then screw off.

(The Station is Stark Tech. They might have some Extremis hidden away somewhere. Extremis does fun things with Living Abyss.)

Once on the Island... The entire Island and therefore everyone on it who eat the native produce is infected with multiple codices and also a benign version of the Transmode virus. Just living on the island and eating the fruits and vegetables grown on the island should eventually build my symbiote up to dragon power while giving it a lo to adapt to... And some of the Codices infecting Krakoa the Island originally came from Cyclops and Jean Grey, whose powers and genetics combine to create time travelers and reality warpers. (And whose symbiotes were modified to adapt and evolve much faster, which... Yeah, really useful to have. Might make the full power up from absorbing their codices permanent and accelerate my evolution in general)

It'd basically just be a waiting game until my symbiote had evolved enough that I could psychokinetically extract codices from people without hurting them and then start harvesting codices from people.

Of course, I'd have to avoid telepaths... And Gwenpool, like the plauge. Symbiote hosts are resistant to mid-reading, but there are a disproportionately high number of omega-level telepaths. And Gwenpool might recognize me as another dimensional traveler with meta knowledge.

But, if it worked, I'd be bonded to a symbiote dragon with reality-warping capabilities from the aggregate of millions of mutant powers.

*Brandy Selbie, current host of the Star Brand, was utterly unaffected by the reality-warping of the Pandemonium Cube... And kept everything she gained from her time in the altered reality(going from being a baby to... I wanna say a six-year-old? She's young enough that she completly forgot that she sensed the Eternals sneaking into Avengers Mountain when Sprite read her mind and used an illusion to turn into her 'magical sleep friend.' She also in the other timeline was raised by Rocket Raccoon and Groot, and so is ridiculously sarcastic, violent, and foul-mouthed for someone her age.)

Yeah, that kind of does nothing. Nobles kind of avoid being WBHed out of existence by not only being one cosmic rung below Strategists, but because the Strategists find it much more useful to destroy the concept rather than the person embodying it. You just don't have that protection.

As for the latter, WBH solves a lot of issues. When it comes to destruction an Excrusian just reality warps better than you. Their biggest issue is if they don't have WBH, but honestly by the time your symbiote cones back online they might not even be in Creation anymore.

*stuff*

Cool, but Strategists don't really care about that. All they need is time to use their destruction abilities, which isn't long at all. You're just gaining more worldly power, while they're operating on a divine level.

Could you take one down? Probably. But we're kind of at the point where the powers are meaningfully different enough that it kind of becomes who moves first, and honestly the Strategist has a much more foolproof way of coming back. They die regularly, even the literally immortal ones.

Oh don't worry. Strategists aren't gods, they kill those fairly regularly. They're the nobility of the Void that existed before Creation, and they want the part that Cneph stole back. Being a god kind of relies on being part of Creation, which they never have been (even if they have powers that interact with it).

So you can try, but all you'll end up with is a very pissed off Ninuan who's just had to come back from death six times since your last encounter, and urgh she's already had to pay her bills and have a shower today so can you just please piss off into nonexistence.

And Symbiotes are the Void that existed before Creation. Pieces of primordial emptiness and darkness brought to live by an eldritch being older than the universe because he's pissed off by the existence of planets and stars and blamed the Celestials for it.

So we're looking at a situation where the symbiote is weaker but also has a much heavier conceptual weight.

Desert Eagle is a hand cannon. It has the largest caliber ammo of almost any handgun, it's big, bulky, heavy, costly, ammo is costly, and has crazy recoil (from what I've seen. Never fired one). Like, "hand cannon" is incredibly accurate for it. Most of the time you only want one pistol, you use both hands with it. Dual wielding looks cool but is much less practical. Dual wielding Desert Eagles.... Well, if you hit what you want to with the first shot, it's going to be gone, so you won't have to worry about how insane the second shot will be (we daren't even try to think of a third!)

Definitely great guns for visuals, though. Standing out is one thing they do in spades. :smallwink:

Anonymouswizard
2022-03-22, 12:36 PM
Yeah, Lara's standard pistols are in the .45 or 9mm sort of range, the kind of pistol professionals use in two hands but not ridiculously big (in the point of view of somebody who does not know guns). In Angel of Darkness the dual pistols are actually missable (you've got to pick one up in, IIRC, an area under a time limit), and in that case she uses all her guns two handed.

You know, despite all it's faults, AoD probably had the best platforming in the series. It lost the grid of 1-5, but the restricted moveset and limited grip just added to the challenge.

Rater202

From the recent Dragonball Super movie, not any of the original non-canon ones.

So, Darkseid's thing is that every Darkseid is an incarnation of the same multiverse scale entity, a sort of living Cosmic Principal. Regardless of the origin of any given version of Darkseid, they are all ultimately embodiments of the concept of Tyranny.

So whether we're talking an Avatar or the complete conceptual entity is important.

When it comes to an Avatar, he's got a lot of cool magic powers, but the greatest feat of pure destruction he demonstrates is using his Omega beams to severely damage but not Bust a version of Earth.

Broly in the new movie is more than a match for Goku and Vegeta in their God Forms—forms that, in the anime when Goku first achieved it, he and Beerus's battle when Beerus was matching Gokus power almost shook the universe apart—even before becoming a Super Saiyan.

It's also noted that his power level keeps rising as a fight goes on and he does at points demonstrate the green aura that was signature of the "legendary" form popularized by his original self and made canon by Kale and so can presumably be assumed to have tha form as well. The legendary form seems to be roughly equivocal to the ultra bulky form that Trunks tried to use against Cell, but with no drawbacks. It also doesn't consume stamina like the regular super Saiyan form does, and in fact, seems to replenish the user's ki and stamina at a rapid rate over time.

When Broly hit his quote-on-quote peak of power in the Movie, his Super Saiyan form, combined with his berserker state that draws out the power of the Ozaru but focuses it, and the legendary power... We're talking at least a 1000X multiplier over his base form, which was already a potential universe buster.

He'd swat one of Darkseid's avatars like a fly.

If we're talking the "True" Darkseid however, that's a lot harder to answer. You can't normally punch a concept.

When Broly and Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta were fighting, they seemed to temporarily tear a hole in the fabric of space-time. And this wasn't just a visual effect because Gogeta reacted to it.

So I'm gonna say that at full power, Broly could fight True Darkseid... But it wouldn't be easy.

Broly's main advantage, in that case, would be that Darkseid is a sadist. Extending from his nature as an incarnation of Tyranny, he doesn't just want to defeat his opponents. Given the choice, he wants to dominate them. Break them. Let them beg for the death that will never come.

Between Broly's tendency to rage, his possibly mutated an enhanced Saiyan power, the stamina replenishing aspects of the legendary power, and his tendency to keep getting stronger over time(which might e a mutated form of Saiyan power) that's just going to make Broly stronger and put more fight in him. There's a distinct possibility that eventually, Broly's power will reach a point where his potential reality-warping raw might can hurt or even kill True Darkseid.

A possibility. Not a certainty. If True Darkseid caches on that his playing like Broly as if a cat with a cornered mouse is just making Broly stronger and that Broly will eventually be powerful enough to pose a legitimate threat he might just finish Broly off before he can get to that level.

It really comes down to how bad Darkseid's ego is.

So, Darkseid's thing is that every Darkseid is an incarnation of the same multiverse scale entity, a sort of living Cosmic Principal. Regardless of the origin of any given version of Darkseid, they are all ultimately embodiments of the concept of Tyranny.

So, is Darkseid an avatar of Molag Bal, or is Molag Bal an avatar of Darkseid?

So, is Darkseid an avatar of Molag Bal, or is Molag Bal an avatar of Darkseid?

Molag Bl is the embodiment of corruption, not Tyranny.

A different form of dominance.

Darkseid will torture you, beat you, or show you an equation that proves mathematically that life is pointless to break your spirit.

Molag Bal will torture you, beat you, or rape you until you either di, swear subservience to him, compromise your deeply held beliefs and morals, or magically transform into some kind of monster.

...Or all of the above.

Molag Bal's sphere encompasses both corruption and domination. He's basically the embodiment of power abuse. If that's not tyranny I don't know what is.

Edit: also with MB, the torture doesn't stop if you die. Dude's invented necromancy, y'know.

Looking good!

It is weird that all your siblings have brown contacts, do they do a lot of acting or something? :smalltongue:,

Ha ha ha.

Complete with a pair of Desert Eagles and holsters even, judging from the background. Shoulder holsters I'm guessing, so they're visible during streaming? I'm curious what v1.0 will look like.

Lara Croft has dual Desert Eagles? Geez, that may be the most unrealistic thing about her.

I think so? I remember from one of the films at least. My understanding is that they're rather heavy guns and they tend to stand out, so their image stuck with me.

:smallwink:

Yeah, Lara's standard pistols are in the .45 or 9mm sort of range, the kind of pistol professionals use in two hands but not ridiculously big (in the point of view of somebody who does not know guns). In Angel of Darkness the dual pistols are actually missable (you've got to pick one up in, IIRC, an area under a time limit), and in that case she uses all her guns two handed.

You know, despite all it's faults, AoD probably had the best platforming in the series. It lost the grid of 1-5, but the restricted moveset and limited grip just added to the challenge.

I'm going off the Tomb Raider: Anniversary version (basically a 7th gen remake of the original game). In that game she uses Colt Mark IV 1911 chambered for .357 ammo. I just spray painted a couple of black toys I found on Amazon, because it's not like I'll be able to walk around with them anyway.

I don't think she's ever used Desert Eagles (although she does use twin Uzis in several games, if unrealistic dual wielding's your thing).

Basically the other .3 that'll lead to v1 is finishing off her belt (I've got all the pieces made and shorts/boots ready; it's just a matter of riveting everything together). Everything after that is just refining the wig, and sorting out a backpack (which I completely forgot about).

And maybe Lucozade for a very British reference.

I think she gets a Desert Eagle in AoD, relatively early on as well. Doesn't dual wield them, but I believe it is an option.

Looking forward to seeing 1.0!

2022-03-22, 02:18 PM
Actually, she gets to wield a single Desert Eagle (dual wielding definitely NOT an option) in Tomb Raider 3. I think the weapon also appeared in Chronicles. Oh, and while the gun *can* be chambered for the .50 Action Express, there are also smaller variants that take .44 or .357 Magnum instead, so it isn't necessarily the biggest calibre handgun around. Especially when monsters like this one exist:

Emphasis on almost. Even if we discount blatantly ridiculous stuff like the Pfeifer Zeliska or that weird "handgun" for .50 BMG rounds, we still have the RSh-12 with its 12.7×55 mm rounds which it shares with a battle rifle.

2) sex switching. Change my genitals to match the gender I am, hell yes. Hopefully it also allows mixing features, because sometimes you're in-between (assuming, for the purposes of this discussion, that you are me).
3) assuming better eyes doesn't help and sex switching isn't on the table, rapid regen is a distant third.

Regarding the dragon plan from yesterday... Something that slipped my mind is that there are several facilities in New York City, in-universe, that store, preserve, replicate, and study various "super diseases" for various purposes. It's not really clear if this is a CDC thing, a separate government thing, or a private thing... But in the Last Remains storyline, it was trivially easy for Sin-Eater to find one, break into it, and steal a sample of Spider-Flu.

It'd probably be easy enough, even laying low, to find one that has a sample of Mothervine, an engineered virus that, essentially, turns baseline humans into mutants.

Granted, it doesn't have any of the safety features that natural mutants possess so for every good power you get a whole lot of Morlock-tier or worse mutations, but a symbiote is able to cure or suppress most diseases so I could have the symbiote I'd have in this scenario suppress the effects of the virus and turn myself into an asymptomatic carrier(essentially a latent mutant) while the symbiote itself gets the full effect with its natural adaptive abilities stabilizing the mutation it develops.

Much less convoluted than what I said yesterday. At least until getting to the later stages.

Back when I spent a couple weeks in Ireland, they salwartly refused to believe me when I told them that we did not call French toast "toast" and that what we called "toast" was the exact same thing they call toast.

French toast is called pain perdu (literally "lost bread", but more accurately "wasted bread") because it's normally cooked with bread that has gone stale and dry and can't be used for anything else*. Let it get damp in a mix of milk, egg and sugar and fry it on a pan and you've got a perfectly serviceable dessert! It's the one nice thing about two people both buying a baguette coming back from work because they thought the other wasn't going to.

It seems that the Québecois do indeed call it pain doré.

Well, what to expect from people who call a portable a cellulaire, hé?

Back when I spent a couple weeks in Ireland, they salwartly refused to believe me when I told them that we did not call French toast "toast" and that what we called "toast" was the exact same thing they call toast.

Knowing the Irish, I'm like 90% sure they were ****ing with you. "Taking the piss" I think they say.

On that topic, I've been trying to cut back on soda. Last week or so I've only had two cans of cola a day. Caught myself reaching for one and having to tell myself that I don't need it a couple times but otherwise it seems to be going well.

I mostly drink that zero sugar stuff that ain't got no calories so this isn't a weight thing, I'm just at the point where I'm a little concerned about how much caffeine is in my system at any given time.

Random thought that popped into my head just now.

A soup. Start with chopped bacon and a pad of butter. When bacon is fried to a crisp, add sliced mushrooms and partially roasted diced potatoes. Once that's settled, add chicken broth, heavy cream, and kosher salt. Once boiling melt in a mixture of sharp cheddar and Colby jack cheese, then top with black pepper and white pepper to taste.

Sound edible?

I used to grow pumpkins.

When I was a little kid, one year we just dumped the guts from jack-o-lantern carving behind the bushes in the front yard as fertilizer and unbeknownst to us there was still a seed in there. It took root and then every year on clockwork we'd have a pumpkin vine snaking up next to the front stoop.

I was just a kid and didn't really know much about agriculture, so most of what I did was sit next to the vine, check on it, and sometimes talk to it because that was around the time I heard the "plants react to sounds" things and obviously, these weren't ideal circumstances for growing pumpkins so while the pumpkins never really got that big. Mabe the size of a baseball, except kind of flat.

Since they wouldn't get too big before winter hit, we'd bring them in around Thanksgiving time and use them as decorations or centerpieces.

I don't know why I'm sharing this now. Just, something reminded me of the old house and I got to thinking of my pumpkin vine.

Today is my mother's birthday. My aunt got her a giant electric skillet. Good quality one, too. The kind where you can do all kinds of things with it.

Since Easter is coming up and my mom tends to do all the cooking during the holidays, she immediately asked "is this a hint?"

So apparently we're doing a big old thing of scalloped potatoes from scratch on Easter Sunday.

In all seriousness though, my mom loves these kinds of countertop kitchen appliances and uses them all the time so.
