If my 5th level wizard was to apply the Toppling Spell metamagic to Magic Missile, and fire the three missiles at three different targets, would all three be subject to being tripped?


Toppling Spell (metamagic feat)
Your spells with the force descriptor knock the affected creatures prone.

Benefit: The impact of your force spell is strong enough to knock the target prone. If the target takes damage, fails its saving throw, or is moved by your force spell, make a trip check against the target, using your caster level plus your casting ability score bonus (Wisdom for clerics, Intelligence for wizards, and so on). This does not provoke an attack of opportunity. If the check fails, the target cannot attempt to trip you or the force effect in response.

A toppling spell only affects spells with the force descriptor.

Level Increase: +1 (a toppling spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level.)

Yes, they would. They all take damage, they all get a trip roll.

That makes a nice use of a 2nd level slot at most levels, at least vs. Medium opponents. Worth Quickening, even.

I had a fun arcanist build around that concept. (Could be done with an arcanist or wizard, but arcanist might be better since you can keep doing toppling magic missiles till you run out of slots without impeding your ability to do other things when the situation calls for it).

Magical lineage because--why not have toppling magic missiles at 1st level.
Level 2: empowered magic missiles for when you don't want to just glitterdust
Level 3: empowered AND toppling magic missiles--or just haste/slow/etc
Level 4: quickened magic missiles
Level 5: quickened, toppling magic missiles because you want to haste and still knock them down or because, "you're still on your feet? I'll do it again."

Burn arcanist points or take spell specialization to get more toppling missiles until you max it out anyway.

Too bad that campaign stopped before I was more than a 2nd level character with a neat trick.
