No reason. I swear. Totally innocent, random question.

Not that I know. AaEG has a bunch of other animals if you want to take a look, probably has a price for Giant Bees but not regular.

I'd go look in a forest for them

I wonder why people assume that something without a price is "free" instead of "priceless".

Well, free is a form of priceless. Just not the one people think of.

Would a bat or locust swarm be a suitable substitute? And if so, do they have any costs associated with them?

A&EG has a Beekeeper's Outfit on p. 29, but no price for bees generally. I would guess that the cost of getting the bees would be considered part of the cost of setting up an apiary; I'd probably call that a "farm" (per DMG2, p. 180).

Maybe work out the price of honey and assume that bees would count as the cost of the materials to make the honey (so half price)?

Do you want a whole hive? Or just a number of hiveless bees?

I have extradimensional hive space. Just nothing to populate them with.

Whatever price you discover or set, after you buy the bees, make sure you give yourself one more.

Because you deserve a freebie.

The price for bees is your soul.

If you can find CR for bees, you can always use Neogi slave rules from LoM.

Nearest would probably be Wasp Swarm (FF), which is CR 2.

The very existence of this question made my day. Thank you, SangoProduction ... and thank you, 3rd-ed.

So in earlier times the way you "bought" bees, from what my history teacher has told me, is you took a large farm animal like an ox or something, you'd kill it on a summer day, and then you'd wait for it's body to "summon" a horde of bees which you would then trap with honey or something.

Now you could just do this the historical manner but I'd like to think this practice lays the groundwork for a low-level spell, maybe first or second level, in which the material component is a fresh ox carcass(15 gp according to the SRD). You do you, naturally.

I was going to say a carcass is not going to attract bees, but then I learned about Vulture bees (https://misfitanimals.com/bees/vulture-bee/)...
