View Full Version : Which feats have you seen?

This is a spin-off from the "Show of Hands: Has Anyone Here Ever Taken the "Durable" feat?"

So, what feats have you actually seen in action? Here's my list (marked with an "*" is any feat I've personally taken)

End Notes:
1- (in a very brief campaign, and player wanted to change his character, because he felt too much like a one-trick pony).
2- (though the campaign ended abruptly right after I'd got it at level 8, never got to actually use it)
3- (but as a temporary campaign boon)
4- (in a one-shot)
5- (like the Infernal Constitution, from the same campaign; it ended right after the team's Sorcerer got it)
6- (old UA Psionic Feat- probably one of the most powerful and flavorful feats in the game, a sad casualty from all the hate the Psionic Dice got).

with blackjack and hookers! My hero.
Feats I have not seen:
PHB feats: Weapon Master.
I've seen all of the rest. The Battlemaster in my Wednesday night group has the Charger feat. He likes it.
Xanathar's feats: saw a few, seen Prodigy most of them all
Tasha's feats: Have not seen the sorcerer Meta Magic one. Have not seen the slasher/crusher/piercer ones.

It is a cool question :) ... however, it might be better set up as a survey where everyone could tick off the feats they have seen used. At least that way, you would get some usable numbers on feat frequency and popularity at the end.

Actor - Once, warlock player with Master of Many Faces. Very rarely relevant for the campaign. She wanted it for roleplay.

Alert - Once, long time ago when 5E was new and people thought it relevant.

Athlete - Never

Charger - Recently by a paladin player. He has used it well enough. He likes to build characters against stereotype. It has been helpful to allow him an attack when he wouldn't be able to otherwise due to distance.

Crossbow Expert - Once, long ago when 5E was new and double hand crossbows was all the rage.

Defensive Duelist - Once by a rogue. She used it often and was happy.

Duel Wielder - Never

Dungeon Delver - Never

Durable - Maybe a Mandela effect, but I think once for a one-shot by a player overexcited about the idea.

Grappler - Never

Great Weapon Master - A few times. A fighter/barbarian has it in a game I'm currently playing. Not every warrior ever has taken it, but it has seen use and has not broken the game to unplayability as its naysayers like to complain about.

Healer - I take it often when I want to play some support. As the levels progress it's better healing than a 1st level Cure Wounds.

Heavily Armored - Never

Heavy Armor Master - A couple of times. The 3 less damage is attractive. It matters at low level where it has seen most use.

Inspiring Leader - I've taken it a few times when I play a CH character.

Keen Mind - Never

Lightly Armored - Never

Linguist - Never

Lucky - Often

Mage Slayer - Never

Magic Initiate - I've taken it a few times early in 5E. I make sure the DM allows casting the 1st level spell with spell slots normally and not the stupid errata way. The similar feats in the Tasha book prove that's how it should be.

Martial Adept - Never

Medium Armor Master - Never

Mobile - I've seen the occasional monk player take this. Even I did once for a campaign that didn't last long. (The infamous monk who had to climb trees at DC 20 I talk about in an unrelated topic.)

Moderately Armored - I would have taken it for a warlock when I reached 4th level had the DM not bailed on the campaign. Otherwise never. I wanted to play a Genie Warlock, not Hexblade, but I cared enough about AC for this character to want the feat.

Mounted Combatant - Never

Observant - Often early in 5E when it was all the rage.

Polearm Master - Once, for a build with Sentinel

Resilient - Often as well as myself. Naturally it's either CON or WIS.

Ritual Caster - Once for druid spells by a sorcerer player. Has seen use. She really cared more about the roleplay than optimization, but she was not playing a suboptimal build.

Savage Attacker - Never

Sentinel - Twice, in the same campaign. A fighter paired with Polearm Master, and a monk/rogue (who did have Mobile) who enjoyed the support aspect of forcing the enemy to face him rather than move away.

Sharpshooter - Often

Shield Master - I took it once. Very happy I did for that character. The bonus action shove (before the attack) was VIP than anything else about it.

Skilled - I took it once recently for an artificer. I was already at 20 IN. The DM valued skill checks enough the feat investment was worth it.

Skulker - Never

Spell Sniper - Once. Warlock player really wanted very long range Eldritch Blast. It was relevant for a couple of encounters.

Tavern Brawler - Never

Tough - Many times. I've taken it.

War Caster - Often

Weapon Master - Never

I think it's easy to list the ones I know I haven't seen. I'll stick to core feats since I haven't seen most of the racial feats, skill feats, or weapon feats.

Have never seen-
Charger
Grappler
Lightly Armored
Linguist

Have never seen as written-
Athlete
Martial Adept

Have only seen once ever-
Athlete(it was reworked to add Expertise in Athletics or Acrobatics too)
Martial Adept(it was reworked to where you could use both maneuvers per rest)
Durable was taken by a Sorcerer with 19 Con. Not a terrible feat in that circumstance.
Keen Mind
Mounted Combat
Mage Slayer
Shield Master
Weapon Master was taken by a Sorcerer of all things to round up an odd Dex
Savage Attacker was taken by a Cleric. I'm still scratching my head about that one.

I would have though Mounted Combat and Shield Master would have been more popular.

Alert, Mobile, PAM, Magic Initiate, Warcaster and Resilient are probably the most popular feats I've seen.

Heavy Armor Master, Observant, and Ritual Caster have been very popular as well.

Some GOOD feats like Lucky, Inspiring Leader, and Sentinel aren't used as often as you'd think.

Hm, paging through my books...

Alert - Taken by a long-running Half-Elf Rogue that was in multiple campaigns.
Actor* - I include the asterisk because we house ruled a variant on this to suit the particular character, but most of it works the same. Very much a roleplay choice.
Elemental Adept - Taken by a Storm Sorcerer in a short adventure.
Lucky - Taken by a Druid in one of our early campaigns due to the player's notoriously bad luck. Memorably, it often did not help.
Mobile - Also taken by the long-running Rogue character.
Mounted Combatant - Taken by my current Paladin.
Resilient? - I want to say someone took this at some point, but I cannot remember who exactly.
Tough - Taken by a Gnome Barbarian who wanted to be as tanky as he could possibly be.
Elven Accuracy - Taken by our current High Elf Ranger.

I think that's it. Could be forgetting something, we had a few characters that didn't stay with us long over the years, but those are the ones I remember for sure.

Alert - Once, long time ago when 5E was new and people thought it relevant.

Alert was relevant for any caster at least up until Fey Touched: gift of alacrity and arguably is still even after that. People hugely underestimate initiative.

Let's see...

Aberrant Dragonmark - taken once by me partly for rounding out Con, partly for shield, on a character who had rolled quite high stats and had plenty of feat space.
Alert - taken multiple times by my various casters, seen also on plenty of other characters, again usually casters.
Crossbow Expert - taken on two or three of my characters, surprisingly never seen it on someone else (or maybe it was once?).
Drow High Magic - taken once by me, on a character with pretty high stats that played strongly on the drow nobility aspect.
Dual Wielder - seen a couple times on others, invariably taken at the wrong time as it's always been on people who hadn't maxed their main stat, never taken by me.
Eldritch Adept - taken once by me on an illusionist.
Elemental Adept - seen once on some sorcerer, early in 5e's cycle.
Elven Accuracy - picked numerous times by me, seen it a couple times elsewhere too.
Fey Teleportation - seen it once.
Fey Touched - taken at least twice personally, both for gift of alacrity (and casting stat).
Fighting Initiate - taken three times by me, at least once by someone else, usually for Blind-Fighting.
Flames of Phlegethos - taken once on a sorcerer of mine, many years ago, he used plenty of fire and there wasn't much in the way of Cha half-feats.
Great Weapon Master - personally have taken it three times, have seen it a lot more elsewhere too.
Heavy Armor Master - seen on someone else once I believe.
Infernal Constitution - seen it once.
Inspiring Leader - had it once, was top contender a number of other times but ended up skipped for flavor reasons
Keen Mind - seen it once many years ago, taken pretty much solely for being an Int half-feat at the time.
Lucky - taken it twice, seen it a few more times on others.
Magic Initiate - picked it once for shilellagh cleric, think I've seen it once or twice elsewhere.
Mobile - taken once, seen it at least once more.
Moderately Armored - used it twice on casters with light armor.
Observant - seen it once or twice elsewhere, notably at least one of the times the player thought it would boost their perception rolls too.
Piercer - taken once, seen it once more.
Polearm Master - taken twice by me, think I've seen it once more elsewhere.
Resilient - possibly the most common feat I've taken (primarily for Con on spellcasters, couple times for Wis on fighters), seen it quite a few times elsewhere too (for similar reasons).
Revenant Blade - ran with it twice.
Ritual Caster - think I've seen it once.
Sentinel - seen it at least twice, possibly more, taken it once myself.
Shadow Touched - taken once, primarily for flavor reasons instead of Fey Touched.
Sharpshooter - taken at least three times, maybe more, seen it just as often elsewhere.
Shield Master - seen it taken once or twice.
Skill Expert - picked it once or twice, will be taking it again soon.
Slasher - had it once.
Spell Sniper - seen it once, a long time ago.
Strixhaven Initiate - taken it once myself, but through the background.
Telekinetic - seen it once or twice.
Tough - seen it at least twice, possibly more. Notably only on very new or inexperienced players.
War Caster - taken it once or twice (primarily for booming blade reactions rather than concentration), seen it a few more times elsewhere.

My personal experience with feats I've personally seen on sheets.

Inspiring Leader - Has given me tons of mileage, very good
Lucky - Probably too good
Metamagic Adept - Very good on sorcerer
Resilient (wisdom) not bad
Sharpshooter - Tons of mileage, very good
Skill Expert - Great way to round off an ability and also get expertise on class that doesn't have it

Actor - haven't seen it in action yet, probably won't. lol
Chef - player basically never used it, I think he took to as a background flavor thing (just take chef tools proficiency my man)
Crossbow Expert - used it once on a level 15 champion, paired with sharpshooter, was a DPR monster
Great Weapon Master - used once on a level 5 barbarian, is DPR monster when he use it
Healer - super good but player always forgets he has it
Lightly Armored - no idea why player chose this for their wizard
Mounted Combatant - player didn't get much mileage out of it
Skilled - player chose this because they wanted their character to be more of a leader, I don't understand though
Spell Sniper - player chose this to get access to eldricht blast, IMO an overrated cantrip on non-warlocks.
Tavern Brawler - player chose this for the memes, shenanigans ensued, IMO a good choice
Tough - DM put it on an NPC to boost their HP
War Caster - haven't seen it in action yet
Revenant Blade - player used this on their paladin, DM has nerfed it for some reason, should be OK but is kinda meh

My experience is colored by players that often forget what they have on their character sheets

Honorable Mention to Mage Slayer, which the player regretted taking when he realized the enemy could still cast as normal and the DM allowed him to retrain. I've seen this feat in action for 1 combat and then never again.

The character I saw who took Alert was an assassin, who therefore had extra incentive to winning initiative.

Oh, and I also gave a dragonborn character basically the benefits of Dragon Hide (+1 AC when unarmored and claws), when I was DMing, as a freebie, because the PHB dragonborn is kind of blah. I don't think it ever ended up being relevant, though.

Aberrant Dragonmark - never seen
Actor - took it once and found it to be pretty useful... but that was playing a changeling. Probably wouldn't have been nearly as useful on most other races.
Alert - seen it once. It did about what I expected - the initiative bonus was certainly noticeable and fun.
Artificer Initiate - never seen
Athlete - never seen
Bountiful Luck - never seen
Charger - seen it once on a barbarian. It came up very rarely.
Chef - took it once. Fun with RP but not terribly strong.
Crossbow Expert - took it once on an artificer. It was very useful, and would 100% recommend it to any crossbow-inclined character.
Crusher - saw it once. Seemed fine.
Defensive Duelist - took it once. Definitely a fun new feature for a martial character that has a spare feat.
Dragon Fear - never seen
Dragon Hide - never seen
Drow High Magic - never seen
Dual Wilder - took it once. Fairly solid for a two weapon fighting character.
Dungeon Delver - never seen
Durable - never seen
Dwarf Fortitude - never seen
Eldritch Adept - never seen
Elemental Adept - took it once and saw it played a couple times. A very good choice if you're playing a caster who focuses on one type of elemental damage, but if you aren't specifically focusing on that you can probably skip it.
Elven Accuracy - saw it once on a rogue - it was very helpful for him.
Fade Away - saw it once. A bit situational maybe, but was pretty good.
Fey Teleportation - never seen
Fey Touched - took it once and saw it played twice. It's a great feat - misty step is helpful for anyone, and there's lots of versatility in its other features.
Fighting Initiate - never seen
Flames of Phlegethos - saw it once. The flame wreath feature was fun at low levels, but was quickly outclassed. Elemental Adept is probably a better choice.
Gift of the Chromatic Dragon - never seen
Gift of the Gem Dragon - never seen
Gift of the Metallic Dragon - never seen
Grappler - never seen
Great Weapon Master - seen a few times. It's an excellent feat for any melee character, but not game breaking.
Gunner - never seen
Healer - took it once on a monk. A fun way to give any character a decent healing option.
Heavily Armored - never seen
Heavy Armor Master - took it once. It was helpful at low levels, but drops off in power fairly quickly.
Infernal Constitution - never seen
Inspiring Leader - took it once and saw it played once. Gives any class a very interesting feature that helps out the entire party.
Keen Mind - never seen
Lightly Armored - never seen
Linguist - took it once, largely for the stat boost. Fun for a bit of RP, but not the strongest feat.
Lucky - took it twice. A fantastic feat for any character.
Mage Slayer - seen it once. It's great when it comes up, but really only helpful in very specific encounters. I'd check with your DM to make sure it'll actually come up before taking it.
Magic Initiate - never seen
Martial Adept - never seen
Medium Armor Master - never seen
Metamagic Adept - took it once. Useful on any spellcasting class that wants to try something different with their spells, and also great on sorcerers specifically due to giving them a lot more metamagic versatility.
Mobile - seen it once. It was pretty useful, though it's probably not for every character.
Moderately Armored - never seen
Mounted Combatant - took it once and saw it once. Extremely helpful for any mounted character.
Observant - took it once and saw it twice. A really solid feat that increases some fun passive abilities.
Orcish Fury - never seen
Piercer - never seen
Poisoner - never seen
Polearm Master - took it once. Extremely useful, as you'd expect.
Prodigy - never seen
Resilient - seen a few times. Maybe not the most exciting feat, but really solid and a good way to shore up defenses.
Revenant Blade - never seen
Ritual Caster - saw it once. It was fairly interesting.
Savage Attacker - never seen
Second Chance - never seen
Sentinel - saw it once. Very useful either with or without Polearm Master.
Shadow Touched - took it once on a sorcerer. Adds a lot of spellcasting versatility - a really solid feat. Fey Touched overshadows it because of Misty Step, but it's really good as well.
Sharpshooter - took it once and saw it once. It's fantastic, and an excellent way to boost damage on any ranged attacker.
Shield Master - saw it once. A fun and slightly different option for a melee character.
Skill Expert - took it three times and saw it once. Useful on virtually any character - every character has a skill that they'd like to be better at. Basically if your character is regularly asked to make any sort of skill check this is a great feat.
Skilled - took it once. Not for everyone, but opens up some fun new doors for a character that takes it.
Skulker - saw it twice. A bit situational since you only use it in combats where you're hidden, but can be helpful on the right character.
Slasher - never seen
Spell Sniper - saw it once. A decent feat, though probably not the first choice for most casters.
Squat Nimbleness - never seen
Strixhaven Initiate - never seen
Strixhaven Mascot - never seen
Swirfneblin Magic - never seen
Tavern Brawler - never seen
Telekinetic - saw it once. Very useful and versatile.
Telepathic - took it once on a sorcerer. Also very useful, and gives a lot more variety in terms of spells.
Tough - saw it once. A really solid feat, though maybe not the most exciting.
Tracker - saw it once on a rogue. Not particularly helpful, and I get why this one never made it out of UA.
War Caster - saw it several times - exactly as good as everyone says. Worth taking for any caster.
Weapon Master - saw it once on a rogue. He only took it so he could use a magic longbow that he found. Definitely a VERY situational feat, and probably not useful on most characters.
Wood Elf Magic - saw it once. Some fun little RP abilities, and the ability to give the party pass without trace is very nice.
