So, say a troll becomes a lich.

Say it becomes on in such a way that it keeps its regeneration.

Am I wrong that once the thing is 'dead' it does the lich thing, do you have to get past its regeneration?

Thoughts? comments? Complaints?

Undead don't have regeneration. Change your troll lich's regeneration to fast healing and call it a day.

Since a creature must have a constitution score to have regeneration, it is impossible for a lich to have regeneration.

Atropals, despite not having a CON Score, have regeneration:

Possibly a case of the specific rules for abominations, getting to override the general rules for regen and CON scores.

the Hunefer had regen too before it was updated to 3.5. Weird that it lost it and the Atropal didnt. Your supposition could be the case.

Some might argue that Atropals were meant to be updated to the Aspect of Atropus (Elder Evils 19) who have fast healing 20 instead.

Edit: Actually, they're referenced separately in Elder Evils (using the ELH page number), so it isn't an update. Weird. They're stillborn godlings, so we can probably handwave it as "gods work differently" and be done with it.

Its 3rd party but one of the ravenloft books talks about undead with regeneration as special exceptions to the rule.

There were a number of undead in 3.0 that had regeneration, and they lost it in 3.5. In 3.5, no undead are supposed to have regeneration because they don't have a Con score.

The 3.5 Ravenloft line was also plagued by 3.0 anachronisms. There are some gems in the 3.0 and 3
5 Ravenloft line, but the crunch was usually disappointing.

Small-sized (or smaller) Lich - with all levels in the Green Star Adept (or Renegate Mastermaker), and under the Greater Humanoid Essense effect - as a "guest" in Symbiotic Creature, while "host" is a Greenbound Troll
Or, the same Lich - as a "base humanoid" for Tauric Creature, while "the base creature" is a Troll with the Hauling Back graft and all the levels in the Fang of Lolth PrC
Either way - physical abilities are of the "host"/"base creature" - thus, both benefits of Lichdom and Regeneration...

I think in this case it's that atropals are a sort of dual outsider/undead type. Despite their specific entry listing them as undead, the first sentence of the abomination section is "abominations are a grouping of the outsider type in the same way that demons are a grouping of the outsider type". Also, on WotC's monster index (https://web.archive.org/web/20161101181246/http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/monsters&tablesort=4), they're listed as "Undead, Large (Evil, Lawful, Outsider)" which as far as I can tell (it's a long list) is a unique designation.
