Welcome to the chat thread for the twentieth Base Class Competition for D&D 5e. If you wish to say anything about the competition which is neither a submission nor a vote, then it belongs here. You do not need to be a contestant to post here. You are allowed to critique a competitor’s work and offer suggestions on how to improve their homebrew through this thread, but it is preferred if you do so through that class’ specific thread (if applicable).

Remember folks, anyone can make a submission, and anyone can comment regardless of whether they've made a submission. The only registration is posting a link on the submission thread.

Note for returning contestents: I've reduced the length of this contest from 8 weeks to 6 weeks. While the extra time seemed nice at first, I think we are all (especially me) submitting in the first four weeks and then losing track of the contest. A shorter contest should hopefully give us enough time to complete submissions but not so much that we forget entirely about finishing our stuff.

1) The class you homebrew should fit the theme. You can interpret the theme as broadly as you like without risk of disqualification, but doing so may reduce your chances of earning votes during the voting period.
2) You may only create one base class. If you create more than one class then you must choose which one to enter and remove all the others from this thread and the contest (making them invalid) . If you do not specify which one you favor by the time voting begins, all of your content is invalid.
3) When you submit your class you must create a post on this thread which either has the content or holds a link to it. You may also optionally create one other individual thread for your class on the homebrew design sub-forum. If it is found that you have revealed your class on another site or on another thread than one on the homebrew design sub-forum, your entry will be considered invalid. If you do make a specific thread for you class, please mention its involvement to the competition in that thread. If you use external formatting resources such as Homebrewery, or GMBinder it is recommended that you also create a PDF of the content and share it here.
4) You may use other homebrew content (such as feats, spells, magical items and monsters) or even features to supplement your class, provided you have permission from the original creator and provide links to the source. Failure to receive permission from the original creation will disqualify you from entry in the current contest.
5) Your class must have fully completed mechanics and descriptions for it to be valid. Entries are due by 11:59 PM Central Time on the deadline. Any submissions after this point are invalid. No changes can be made to your class while voting is taking place. Failure to comply with the previous rule will result in disqualification.
6) Any content which has been declared invalid by the rules above cannot be voted for, but you may decide to remove it from the contest and create another class instead. If you are disqualified then you are not allowed to enter any more homebrew for this competition, though you may still vote and later enter the next competition.
7) Please note that misunderstandings occur, if you break a rule which results in disqualification it might be excused if you can convince the group that it was a result of confusion over the rules.

Contests stay up for 86 weeks unless an extension is requested by participants. Voting threads then go up for 3 weeks before the next contest begins.

Dragons (What it says on the face.)
Heroes from Myths (Take a specific figure from myth, folklore, or cultural stories, like Heracles or the Monkey King or even Paul Bunyan, and make it a class.)
Other Media (Games, books, comics, movies, music, theater, even other TTRPGS).
Breakfast Cereal Mascots (Current or historical.)
Be Your Own Class (Turn an existing subclass into a feature-complete base class of its own.)
Not in Kansas Anymore (You can't use the same core damage or spell progression as any of the core classes.)
Truth and Lies (Classes focused on deception or honesty, fact-finding or fact-obscuring. Really anything about truth, or about lies.)
Sound of Silence (Classes based around sound or the absence thereof.)
I'm not Gestalt, But... (Classes that simultaneously allow a character to fill the shoes of two other classes. We're looking for overpowered, unlike Hybrid Vigor.)
Gonna Need a Spreadsheet (Classes so complicated to track or do math for that designing a spreadsheet around your character might start to look appealing.)

Also note that themes that have not been used in at least six contests (anything up to Monster Mash II, except Who Needs Swords and Sorcery, Terror, and Doesn't Meet Expectations) are also eligible for being chosen.)

How broken would the ability to use a action to give advantage to the next attack roll or ability check a creature makes before the end of its next turn, no resource cost? Said class would have very little combat ability as far as direct damage goes and this would be basically a help action that doesn’t need you to be near by.

That's exactly how the Help action works ^^

That was the thinking. It’s basically a slightly less restricted help action that doesn’t have a distance restriction, so you can do it safely from range. Idea was that as you go up in levels you can apply other buffs when using it. Not sure that + ribbons and non-combat features can carry a class on its own.

It's quite strong if you use it to help a rogue, but nothing overwhelming, I suppose.

The Mastermind rogue subclass does this, and you would also be compared, probably unfavorably, to just having a familiar. But I would say that, yes, this would be in keeping with theme of the contest: it would be weak in combat, but that's totally fine: as long as it makes up for that social and/or exploration, that's the whole idea.

There's a rogue subclass and a race that can do this as a bonus action, rogue at will, hobgoblin PB/D. The hobgoblin starts to add benefits like temp HP on top.

Yeah. The feature in question is for a merchant class i’m working on. The name I had lined up was “I Have People for That”

Alright, Add-a-Kid (https://forums.giantitp.com/showsinglepost.php?p=25499985&postcount=5) just needs the class/subclass charts and stats for the Boon Companions of the Wild Child and should be ready.

If anyone can see an obvious heinous issue, pls let me know!

The brute is playable, and I think everyone can see what I was going for. Do I love it? No. The Mythic Brute leaves me giddy for reasons I don't really understand myself, but the base class and the other subclasses feel a bit underwhelming and one-note. The mythic brute as I wrote it is something I've decided I badly need in D&D, though. "I grapple the tornado" "You what?" "YOU HEARD ME." Fighter subclass maybe?

The class is actually good, probably it's just a bit underwhelming because a lot of features are ASIs or Strength increases, but I like it. Maybe you can get rid of The Big and move some of its features to the base class? Like adding something similar to the 3.5 Goliath (choosing to be treated as a size larger at will), and the ability to occupy one or more additional squares near you (I personally like this one a lot for no reasons).

I don't think that overall it fits the theme completely, but it's still good.

Damon_Tor

I don't think that overall it fits the theme completely, but it's still good.

I definitely walked a line on that. Most classes are something like 75% combat features, 25% other pillars. The goal I had for the brute was to invert that, and do 75% other pillars, 25% combat. I think I was maybe 60/40 in the end, but it isn't always clean. For example, I consider the primal brute's movement modes and special senses to be exploration features rather than combat features, even though they can apply to combat.

Naturally anything which benefits strength checks can be applied to grappling (and brutes are absolutely very good grapplers) which is part of the reason why Extreme Effort disables movement (in addition to it being based on a "full round action" in the d20 modern class I was inspired by). That means that brutes are going to be better than just about anybody when it comes to grappling a guy and making him hold still, but when it comes to grabbing a guy and making him move where you want him to go (into hazards, typically) you'll be better off with a raging barbarian. Brutes are also hindered as grapplers because they lack Extra Attack, which allows other strength classes to grapple once and also attack. In other words, for a brute, grappling is less a part of combat than it is a way to make combat stop.

Yes, they have Brute Strike, which is a combat feature, but it's deliberately worse than Extra Attack in combat situations. One place it out-performs Extra Attack? Breaking Objects. Some objects, especially large ones, will have a minimum damage threshold for breaking them. So if both a fighter and brute are attacking a wooden door and the fighter hits twice for 8 damage each time and the brute hits once for 12 damage, well if that door has a minimum damage threshold of 10 the fighter's attacks do nothing, while the brute's will damage it. This ability of the brute's is further evolved by the Smasher ability, which ensures the brute will be dealing maximum damage to those objects. In a party with a brute, the intention is to not need a lock picker: the brute handles any locked doors.

Hey all.

I have some personal stuff building up and I need to take a break from formatting and then abandoning managing these contests (and most likely from participating in them) for a couple months.
For good or ill I should have a more settled life by September or so, and I can come back and start up again then, but for ending this contest and starting the next one, does anyone feel like interim managing?

Do what you have to do -- we all respect the effort you put in for these guys.

We should be able to end this contest at the usual time, or vote for an extension, by community vote. That leaves two things one person should volunteer to do:
1) Make a single thread for voting, and declare the winner. The voting points speak for themselves, the rules we've been using are pretty objective and clear.
2) When that ends, decide on a new Base Class contest and make the usual two threads for it.

The weeknds in question, August 7 and 28, are coincidentally not great for me, but if nobody else volunteers in 72 hours from now I'll still do it.

This current theme reminds me of a 3.5e homebrew class my wife played years ago. I think it was Adventure Chef. All I remember is grease was a primary spell, he was afraid of combat, and he bonked anything that came too close with a frying pan.

I don't really know that I'll compete with the base classes, but I've had an idea for quite some time inspired by the ability to upgrade eldritch blast. The theme is not quite suitable anyway.

Ok, here goes... I had a pretty neat idea a little over a week ago that would suit the theme for this contest, but I haven't had any of the time needed to put the idea together, much less the balancing and cross referencing necessary to make sense. So I don't have much detail available.

I would like to share the basic concept anyway.

The Cleaner!

Prestidigitation is a free cantrip at level 1. Must clean the things!
Unseen Servant not too long after. Ever wish your coworkers would just... listen?

Procrastination: Burst of Productivity - This essentially functions like a Channel Divinity in which one entire minute allows you and allies nearby much greater ability to clean up the battlefield! Perhaps something directly relevant to speed (Cunning Action?) or your cleansing wrath invoking fear into nearby enemies, forcing them to leave (Conquering Presence?). Naturally, different options are obtained by choosing your subclass, each within their own environment and profession.

Subclasses:

Housekeeping - You don't deal with the customers too much, but when you do you always have a pretty good idea what they need. It doesn't change much around here, just the same kind of messes that keep you wondering what kind of condition these people must leave their houses in.
- Probably Thieves' Tools. Likely access to the sleep spell to put them down and message to get them up, per request of course.

Janitor - You dodge around students constantly, dreading their inevitable lunch break. You know when that bell rings, catastrophe is soon to follow. But these kids will grow out of it and be responsible adults. Well, maybe you're a big company corporate Janitor and found out that they never really grow up after all.
- Some kind of tools that focus on fixing things. Shouldn't they get maintenance for that? Or just have the mending spell.

Busser/Waiter - You can never tell what kind of people you're going to deal with in here. At least you don't have to cook the food... most of the time. Still, it's not too bad with your standard expectation, at least until the dinner crowd shows up.
- Cook's Utensils and probably Acrobatics. Eventually learning the spells create or destroy water and purify food and drink.

Thank you!

That's two votes for an extension. Under the circumstances, I think that's enough. Plus, this means we'd get one and maybe two? more entries!

That will give you time to polish the concept, right?

Due date is now August 21, followed by the usual voting period.

You have to format them using the forum code, try to quote a post with a table and take a look, it may seems complicated on a first glance but it's actually quite easy once you have tried it.

I like the rhyming poetry; I am a little uncertain how to interpret the class itself - maybe another couple lines about what a Candler is, the source of their magic power, and/or why they are out of place?

I also noticed some typos/stray lines in the Shape of the Candle (check the last line) and Extraplanar Wisps (check the line on 7th-level spell slots).

Procrastination is my finest form. I'll have it done in 12 hours. Should be enough time for sleep, responsibility, and that tie-breaker buzzer shot. Let's go!

Edit: Ha, 12 hours, silly me. I’ll get it though.

The Cleaner (https://forums.giantitp.com/showsinglepost.php?p=25553561&postcount=6) is very focused on the work force as a sanitation expert. Choose your career, your walk of life; Housekeeping, Janitor, or Waiter. Teach allies and enemies alike how to maintain order and hygiene in its various ideals.

Oooo, so sorry, your post was at 12:01, I'm going to have to disqualify it.

Just kidding :)

Hey everyone, I am coming to you "live" from a Dunkin Donuts on the NJTurnpike to say that the voting thread will be open this evening, in about eight hours or so. I didn't forget about you, just had some "wait, it's Monday?" related issues come up this morning. Submissions are closed after I send this post and get my chocolate glazed with sprinkles, meaning yes, just to be 100% clear, the Cleaner is on the list.

Meanwhile if anyone sees a typo or other minor correction they want to get cleared up, again, you have about eight hours.

Pre-emptive thanks to all participants for putting up with your substitute judge, I'll try to follow the usual format and we definitely will follow the usual rules W.R.T. points for first, second, third.

Mmm guys, why you are all voting only two entries instead of three? I'm missing something?

It seems the first voter started as such and everyone followed suit. I just researched previous contests and discovered there are 3 votes usually… Going to toss in another, I suppose (if this is the way we’re rolling)?

I’m always wishing I had more votes to hand out and give recognition to all the cool ideas.

I did get it started by throwing in my third vote, by the way.

3. The Cleaner. If I ever get around to doing my "Underdark HVAC Maintenance" campaign, I will look to this class (particularly the "Janitor" subclass) for inspiration.
You may use this, absolutely.

1. The Cleaner. This is everything I wanted out of this class entry: legitimately out of left field idea, a solid theme, and class features that make me laugh out loud. This does everything I want and it cuts out all the fat of extra subsystems. In my opinion it's a little bit too lean, and the high-level utility isn't that interesting. Still a rockstar class and my choice by #1.
You... ...made my entire week. Thank you so much for the kind words!

Hey everyone! I'm back with some bad news. My life situation that called for a hiatus has not (fully) resolved. There's also some good news (for me) which is that my wife and I have decided to try to resurrect our small business. Unfortunately, the combination of these two things means that I no longer have the time (or brainpower) to manage these contests month to month. So I'm extending my hiatus to "indefinite". I've already posted to a similar effect in the Subclass Contest. It's been a lot of fun participating in and later organizing these contests, and we've had some real gems come out of it. I hope someone can take the reins because I really am proud of these contests and their effect on this little corner of this little corner (of this little corner[...]) of the world. If I have a calm month going forward I'd love to drop in and make a quick submission, too. I shouldn't vanish entirely.

If anyone does want to take over, I don't have any outside documentation for the Base Class Contests that isn't in every initial post. And of course, you can reformat it to your own preferences too. If you need advice or just want to ask about my general process, feel free to send me a PM.

And again, it's been a genuine pleasure to brew with you all.

I am also putting forth my interest in running the contest threads. I hesitated the first go round was to my lack of GitP experience in general. :smalltongue:

I imagine I would just follow the same format as we're accustomed to.
