One of the other characters in our party aspires to become an intelligent dagger upon his death. The character is a goblin shadowthief, and by far the shortest lifespan character in the group.
He has had several encounters with sentient weapons, and the player has decided that his character now aspires to become one as well.

Within the rules of pathfinder 1st ed, how would we go about achieving this? Our GM is also fairly lenient as far as third party and 3.X material go, if anything from there could do the job.

Thanks.

Kill him as part of the item creation process for making a really cool magic dagger.

Have him respec as either a Bladebound Magus, a Phantom Blade spiritualist, or a Blade Adept arcanist; all of which come with an intelligent weapon. Then say that the PC is actually the weapon, instead of the guy carrying it.

Head off the reaper and take levels in Spirit Blade (http://spheresofpower.wikidot.com/spirit-blade) immediately. There's an option towards the end of being a weapon by default rather than as an option from one moment to the next.

Edit: Actively making it happen on death... will probably require outside aid and possibly house rules for it. Soul Bind to keep his soul from moving on, and maybe have a crafter use that gem as part of making an intelligentmagic item, maybe?

I suppose he could use a variant of the old "Psionic Sandwich" trick. Get the item he wants to change into. Have somebody Polymorph Any Object it into a human (or goblin, or some other creature with a mind). Use a Power Stone (or whatever the Pathfinder equivalent is) to get a single-use True Mind Switch to permanently switch minds with the new creature. Polymorph duration expires, he's now a sentient magic item. (He also has a magic sword walking around in his old body, but that's no longer his problem).

There's the Intelligent Magic Weapon racial class "Four Horsemen Present: Living Items" by Rogue Genius Games. You can read a review here (https://endzeitgeist.com/horsemen-present-living-items/).

There's also the Arma race (https://lrgg.fandom.com/wiki/Arma)for Pathfinder by Little Red Goblin Games, who are magic weapons that can shapeshift into humanoids, if he'd rather keeps his class levels open.

And not available for buying directly, the Trailseeker patreon has the article the Singing Sword (https://www.patreon.com/posts/4524971), an archetype for bards, clerics, oracles, and skalds where you turn into a magic weapon for others to wield. They can absorb magic weapons to apply their magic bonuses to their weapon form, up to 4 at level 20.

Dunno the polymorph limitation in PF, but in 3.5 you could use Polymorphy any Object twice (to make it permanent).

A non-magical object cannot be made into a magic item with this spell. Magic items aren’t affected by this spell.

Note that it doesn't disallow to turn creatures into (intelligent) magic items. The item won't have any other special magical properties, but it can be masterwork intelligent weapon. The +X enhancements must be applied by crafting later on.

Since it's "after his death", become a Ghost with the Vehemence ability, which allows possessing objects?
