When an explosive effect (fire or thunder) or reasonably executed trigger (Acid/Base reactions, lightning used to spark flammables under pressure, etc), you can achieve a base radius of 10 feet or double the effective radius to deal 1/2 the base dice as bludgeon, piercing, or slashing if sufficient debris or shrapnel is prepped.

Within the standard radius, a creature can trade up to half their default damage dice for the bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage.

Such effects may also disperse or move cloud phenomena, though usually in unpredictable directions dependent on many complex factors creature's cannot know outside a lab environment.

Example: if there's enough debris stacked in a space to create rough terrain or an obstacle and someone drops a 3rd level fireball in the midst of it, it can blast out to a 40 ft radius dealing 4d6 slashing or bludgeoning depending on the debris.

Classic schtick: Thunderwave birdshot. Scatter ball bearings and cast thunderwave. Thunderwave will deal its 2d8 thunder within 15 feet, but 1d8 piercing for an additional 15 feet.

Let's say you use it on a ghost. Normally immune to Thunder, the PC can choose to have the initial 15 ft cube deal 1d8 Thunder and 1d8 Piercing. This allows a little prep to make an otherwise completely ineffective spell have some effect. It also rewards planning by stretching magical resources.

As a quick and dirty solution for nonmagical effects. Any expendable (vial of acid, alchemist's fire, etc) can be rigged to fill a 5 ft cube dex save for half (Int based DC of creature setting trap). or a 15 ft cube save for none. An extra vial can either add to the initial effect or make the large area save for half.

Example: you use 3 bottles of holy water to make an undead killing shower trap triggered by shooting the vials hung from the ceiling. They can be rigged to explode over
- 1 square for 6d6 radiant
- a 3x3x3 cube for 4d6 save for half
- a 3x3x3 cube for 6d6 save or none.

Alchemist fire example using 2 vials
- 1 square for 2d4 fire and burn
- a 3x3x3 cube for 1d4 fire and burn save for half
- a 3x3x3 cube for 2d4 fire and burn save or none.
etc.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
