So the fighter class in 3e is all about the feats. Does anyone know of a 3e variant fighter class that has actual class features, or mixes things up so it has something else besides just feats?

Thanks in advance!

There is the sneak attack fighter (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#fighter) which has sneak attack instead of feats and the generic fighter (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm#warrior) which can take many class features as feats.

More generally, there are many alternative class features (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?444354-3-5-Alternative-Class-Features-(ported-from-Wizards-community-boards)) which replace feats with abilities.

The generic class article doesn't mention swapping class features for feats. Do you have anything more on that?

I don't think I want fighters sneak attacking.. that's a rogue thang..

The bonus feats (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm#bonusFeats) section lets you select certain class features in place of bonus feats--note that generic classes all get bonus feats instead of class features.

You could also take a look at the Pathfinder version of the fighter (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/fighter), which is still mostly about feats but gets some nice things along the way.

Thanks.. Would those work on a regular (not generic) fighter as well?

No, but it's not really broken if you did houserule that.

There was a Dead Levels article on the Wizards site. Still available on the Wayback Machine; search for http://archive.wizards.com/ default.asp?x=dnd/cwc/20061013a

(EDIT: Splitting it up so it doesn't auto-merge the URL and make it unreadable)

They had an entry for Fighter.

Dragon 310 has a bunch of variant fighters who work like that - ditch bonus fighter feat, pick up class feature.

How would you feel about classes occupying the same niche as Fighter? Arguably, Barbarian, Battle Dancer, Crusader, Knight, Marshal, Samurai, Swashbuckler, and Warblade are all just different takes on the Fighter concept.

If back-porting from Pathfinder, one of my favorite Fighter archetypes is Martial Master, which gives you a limited ability to change your feats mid-combat. I also like Dawnflower Dervish, which lets you move and full-attack in the same round. And then there's High Guardian, which lets you use Strength instead of Dexterity to determine the number of extra attacks of opportunity given by Combat Reflexes. While not an archetype, the Dirty Fighting feat allows you to ignore certain feat prerequisites, including allowing you to take Improved Trip without needing Int 13 or Combat Reflexes. The various above options together produce something more like what I think the Fighter class should be.

The Zhentarim Soldier substitution levels (https://web.archive.org/web/20080328040907/http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20060327a) give you some intimidate bonuses at 3rd, 5th, and 9th level. The 9th level ability combined with the feat Imperious Command in DotU can keep one opponent cowering for an entire encounter. Also be sure to take the Never Outnumbered skill trick.

The weapon mastery feats in PH2 are basically Fighter features. You can go Fighter 9/ Warblade 10/ Fighter 1, get all the Zhentarim Soldier and Dead Levels features, and still take Weapon Supremacy at 20th with your Fighter 10 bonus feat.

How does that work when Weapon Supremacy requires Fighter level 18?

Warblade's Weapon Aptitude class feature lets you qualify for Fighter-exclusive feats as if you had a Fighter level of your Warblade level -2. These virtual Fighter levels stack with actual levels in Fighter.

At our table Fighters get the weapon focus and weapon specialization feat chains as class features at odd levels starting at level 3. Frees up the fighter bouns feats for other things. Of course the best way to play a fighter is to hit PRCs ;-)
