So, I don't think this has been done before, unless it was done over at BG or here and my search skills are failing me, but thought it might be worthwhile to compile a list of the official skills (and sub-skills) that exist in 3.5 (and un-updated 3.0).

To be clear, I won't be including PF, 3rd party, or homebrew. I also won't be including KoK, Ravenloft or Dragonlance; Dragon Mag or Dungeon mag, although I may give these their own section in the future.

So, here goes - formatting will change throughout the process, and I might pretty it all up with tables etc.

It may be worthwhile to note which skills are locked by class feature (Search, Disable Device by Trapfinding, Hide by HiPS), or feat (Survival by Track, Hide by Darkstalker).

There are some extra knowledges in Oriental Adventures which may interest you.

A little memey but the now dead web enhancements (pls tell me if anyone knows where to find those now) had fabulous cats. That had the skill Handle Humaniod which was basically diplomacy but could only be used by cats on humanoids.

I would be curious to know what profession skills are named explicitly in 3rd edition. I think PF went into naming some of them in the skill description but you said you are not doing PF. Perhaps there are some hidden in the prerequisites for certain prestige classes?

Profession (sailor) is required for a couple of PrCs. I also remember seeing a reference to Profession (barrister) discussed in a different thread.

Honestly, trying to list every craft and profession skill seems like a hiding to nothing as there are potentially thousands of them, but if we're doing this...

Lots of Craft skills in Chapter 4, A&EG which likely aren't updated...

EDIT: Also, Profession (Executioner) is a thing in Book of Vile Darkness. If you can figure out a way to render targets helpless and therefore vulnerable to a strike with an executioner's sword, and then autofail a Profession (Executioner) check, you do a critical hit. Good times.

Tea ceremony

Hey, can someone remind me why bards can't use bardic music with tea ceremony? I seem to remember they can't but I don't remember the RAW why (besides the ridiculous image of a bard setting up a tea table so perfectly, amidsth a battle, that their comrades are inspired to fight).

Particle_Man
2022-07-29, 10:53 PM
Don’t know about the RAW answer but maybe because a proper tea ceremony takes a long time to complete and multiple participants (the tea server and guest(s)) to do it right, and thus is not feasible in most situations involving orcs swinging falchions at your friend’s head while screaming bloody murder?

Now don't get all reasonable on me.

I found it.

[...] reciting poetry, chanting, singing lyrical songs, singing melodies, whistling, playing an instrument, or playing an instrument in combination with some spoken performance [...]

Bardic Music requires, instrumentation, vocals or spoken words. Tea Ceremony is none of those - it's not sound based at all.

Yeah, the sub skill list, especially for Profession and Craft, is going to be laborious.

I'm focusing on finishing up the formatting on my VC entry right now, but will update as I get a chance.

A bunch of crafts and professions are suggested in the PHB / SRD skill descriptions which have not yet been listed. I don't know if there's much value in listing anything that's not a prerequisite for something else, though, since these skills can consist of literally anything you can think of to fill in the blank.

Craft (Basketweaving) - PHB 70
Craft (Boatbuilding) - Stormwrack 84
Craft (Calligraphy) - PHB 70
Craft (Carpentry) - PHB 70
Craft (Cobbling) - PHB 70
Craft (Leatherworking) - PHB 70
Craft (Locksmithing) - PHB 70
Craft (Pottery) - PHB 70
Craft (Ropemaking) - Stormwrack 84
Craft (Sailmaking) - Stormwrack 84

Profession (Boater) - PHB 80
Profession (Driver) - PHB 80
Profession (Fisher) - PHB 80
Profession (Guide) - PHB 80
Profession (Herder) - PHB 80
Profession (Hunter) - PHB 80
Profession (Lumberjack) - PHB 80
Profession (Miller) - PHB 80
Profession (Porter) - PHB 80
Profession (Ranger) - PHB 80
Profession (Tanner) - PHB 80
Profession (Teamster) - PHB 80
Profession (Woodcutter) - PHB 80

So mime and interpretive dance are also not feasible with bardic music in 3.5? Interesting.
Note that bardic music requires having ranks in perform, but does not require making an actual perform check except for fascinate and countersong. A bard could play a lute with 11 ranks in perform (strings) and 20 charisma at level 8 for Inspire Courage +2. A bard with 3 ranks in perform (mime) and 6 charisma could play a lute for the exact same effect. While you can't produce a bardic music effect, being trained as a mime and having ranks in perform (mime) would allow you to qualify for class features and grant you access to the ability.

That article also lists knowledge (dnd, call of Cthulhu, my little pony tails of equestria, etc) as being a thing because of knowledge game system. Also knowledge anime, tote rule book, etc. Also humorously the track event ability implies that you can find a canceled event, meaning you can go to a event even though it’s not happening.

So..did Perform work differently in 3.0? Did you need to take it for each specific instrument etc?

Some of those I've come across are Drum, Flute, Harp, Lute, Pan Pipes and Recorder.

Actually, here's what I found on a 3.0 SRD (http://www.dragon.ee/30srd/):

Possible Perform types include ballad, buffoonery, chant, comedy, dance, drama, drums, epic, flute, harp, juggling, limericks, lute, mandolin, melody, mime, ode, pan pipes, recorder, shalm, storytelling, and trumpet. The character is capable of one form of performance per rank.

Would most assume that the 3.5 version supersedes this? Although I do like the idea of juggling and mime being Perform subskills in 3.5...

The 3.5 version of Perform clearly states that a lot of those above get rolled into other subskills:

Act (comedy, drama, mime)
Comedy (buffoonery, limericks, joke-telling)
Dance (ballet, waltz, jig)
Keyboard instruments (harpsichord, piano, pipe organ)
Oratory (epic, ode, storytelling)
Percussion instruments (bells, chimes, drums, gong)
String instruments (fiddle, harp, lute, mandolin)
Wind instruments (flute, pan pipes, recorder, shawm, trumpet)
Sing (ballad, chant, melody)

No. Each rank gave you new specific instrument (or other performance type).

Ah, I see. I pretty much skipped 3.0 altogether - my group had a looong break after 2E (people having kids and such); when we reformed, it was already earlyish 3.5.

So..did Perform work differently in 3.0? Did you need to take it for each specific instrument etc?

No. Each rank gave you new specific instrument (or other performance type).

You are skilled in several types of artistic expression and know how to put on a show. Possible Perform types include ballad, buffoonery, chant, comedy, dance, drama, drums, epic, flute, harp, juggling, limericks, lute, mandolin, melody, mime, ode, pan pipes, recorder, shalm, storytelling, and trumpet. (The DM may authorize other types.) You are capable of one form of performance per rank.

1 A lot of 3.0 Perform subskills got rolled into broader categories, and how many subksills you got worked kind of differently:

Sorry this is 16 years late, but thank you so much for compiling this.
