View Full Version : Ways to gain rake?

Say you have a critter with a claw/claw/bite routine but who would logically have claws on the rear legs too. Is there a way (a feat, maybe?) to give that creature the rake ability so that the rear claws can be used in combat?

I don't think so. Nearest things I'm aware of are the Rend and Rapidstrike feats in Draconomicon.

Rake (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#rake) is a very specific kind of attack; it only activates while in a grapple, and doesn't take the usual -4 to hit. I'm guessing you're trying to get extra attacks in other circumstances besides just grappling?

Since the claws are a natural attack, the only ways you'd be able to stack extras on it would be by getting Hasted, somehow adding extra natural attacks (like through Incarnum or Warshaper, if you could somehow get a shapeshift template onto the thing).

(EDIT: Aside, I've always thought that Cats should get rake attacks. Mine regularly do that to string toys and offending legs after they've established a grapple).

Bloodclaw Master kinda gets something like that at 5th level.

Rending Claws (Ex): At 5th level, while you are shifting and attacking with two daggers or two Tiger Claw weapons and you successfully hit an opponent with both weapons in the same round, the second weapon that hits deals an extra 2d6 points of damage. This effect is considered a boost from the Tiger Claw discipline. When you use rending claws, you lose the use of one Tiger Claw boost you have readied for the current encounter, just as if you had initiated the boost (except you do not also gain the boost?s normal effect). Once you use this ability, you can recover the maneuver you expended and use it normally.

Claws count as tiger claw weapons, so the two claw attacks would trigger this.

Given that it's made with natural weapons, you may be able to convince your DM that a rake attack should be a natural attack, allowing warshaper to give it to you with a single-level dip.

Also during Pounce, which explicitly states (at least for the larger felines) that they get to make rake attacks on pounce.

The Feral Creature template can also give a Rake attack; LA +1, but it's not 100% clear whether HD other than RHD count for unlocking the later special attacks, and you need 8 "monster HD" to get Rake. Ask your DM whether class levels count.

Totemist can get Rake-like attack via binding Landshark Boots to Totem chakra (and, if necessary, share effect via Share Soulmeld feat - presuming critter in question is their Mount or something)

Sounds like the OP is referring to an animal or monster of some kind, so Feral may be a good solution, depending on HD.

I'd suggest looking here [3.X] Extra attacks, natural attacks, AoO (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?127463), the only mention of rake I saw was the aforementioned Feral template.

Lions do get Rake attacks as part of their statblock. Just cast Reduce Animal on one. It'd be a pretty big cat, but then, so was Garfield, and probably just as dangerous in the presence of lasagna.

It's usually, but not always: Sahuagin (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/sahuagin.htm) and Skum (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/skum.htm) got extra attacks while swimming, Dragonkin - when attacking from the air...

Servals (Sandstorm) also get rake, and are small. You could re-fluff them as Maine ***** or another large domestic cat...

We are edging closer to this becoming a cat pic thread.
