Sometimes people wonder about the difference between a Knowledge (history) check and the Bardic Knowledge class feature.
I have a real-world example to make it clear.
I was listening to a discussion between two competent history mavens. They both know a lot about European history, which I do not. [I’ve never taken a European history course on any level.]
The question came up, “What King of England did Joan of Arc led troops against?”
One of the historians was working from the year (which I didn’t know). The other started with who the King of France was (ditto) and who he married…
But I got the answer first, with a Bardic Knowledge check. I said, “Henry the Sixth, Part One.”
