Portal guardian is an inherited or acquired template that can be added to any creature. The base creature gains the following special attacks:

Portal Link (Su) Free action 1/round. The creature forms a link to a non-instantaneous portal within 120 ft. Unless the portal’s creator is present and gives it permission, it must win an opposed level check (its Hit Dice vs. the effect’s caster level) to do this. It can only attempt to use portal link once per day on any given portal. While the creature lives, entering a linked portal without its consent requires an opposed level check with it; failure results in wasted movement. It can always sense when someone tries to enter a linked portal. If a portal guardian goes more than 120 ft. away from a linked portal, that portal is no longer considered linked until it returns into range.

Portal Blast (Su) Swift action; recharge on 6; requires line of sight to a linked portal. A 60-foot beam of energy as wide as the portal emits from one linked portal, dealing 1d6 damage per HD the guardian has (Reflex half; the DC is based on the better of the guardian's Constitution or Charisma scores) and bull rushing those caught within, except the guardian, with a bull rush bonus equal to the damage dealt.

Punish Trespass Immediate action when someone tries to pass through its linked portal, recharge 1 round. Portal blast immediately recharges and it uses it as part of this action. It can use this ability while flat-footed.

Special: Once per encounter, it can use use this ability while on the other side of its linked portal from the triggering creature. In addition to the normal effect, it's teleported to the side of portal the triggering creature tried to enter from; any creatures who would share its new space are pushed out. If the portal is wider than its space, it chooses where to appear.

CR: The creature's CR is increased by 1 if encountered near a portal.

Adaptation: You can tailor the effect of portal blast to the nature of the linked portal. For example, a portal to an elemental plane might emit a barrage of that element, or a guardian might cause a portal to manifest a symbol trap that immediately triggers.

Interesting and has potential, but could use some clarification.

Can a PG link to more than one portal at a time?

What happens if another PG tries to link to an already linked portal?

Are there any spells or items whose effects count as portals for this?

How is the template acquired?

Could a PC have it, and what would be the LA?

Some of the abilities are described using 4th or 5th edition language, which needs to be translated for 3.5. “Recharge on 6” means it has a 1 in 6 chance to recharge each round.

“Per Encounter” abilities are not a thing in 3.5e and should probably be changed to once per 10 minutes.

Thanks for the thoughtful response

As written yes if they're within 120 ft. Opposed checks are required to enter all of them, but use of portal blast/punish trespass is limited by its actions.

What happens if another PG tries to link to an already linked portal?
As written multiple could link to same portal to make it more difficult to cross

Yes, anything that creates a portal

How is the template acquired?
Fiat. Not every acquired template specifies how it's acquired, but the distinction is still meaningful because it means it can be added after inherited templates, class levels, etc (eg an incarnate construct could be one).

[QUOTE]Could a PC have it, and what would be the LA?
As normal, no LA = not playable

If d20/3e has a future we should incorporate innovations, including good parts of later editions

There are some per-encounter abilities, such as martial maneuvers. Ironically 3e has true per-encounter abilities whereas 4e doesn't (in 4e encounter powers actually mean you need to rest for 5 min to recharge them)
