View Full Version : Anything that stores Ioun stones?

I am wondering if there are any actual items like the one described in OotS 967 (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0967.html). Not something that allows the effect of an Ioun stone to be transferred to someone else, but rather a worn or carried item into which an Ioun stone could be placed that would allow the wearer to get the benefit of the Ioun stone without having to have the stone orbiting his head. I know about the Ioun Blade on page 111 of the Arms and Equipment Guide, but is that the only option? Just to give an example of why this might be desirable, an Ioun stone that gives a bonus to diplomacy kind of spoils the effect when it creates an annoying distraction to anyone you try to talk to. So is the Ioun Blade it, or are there other options? The less obtrusive, the better.

If you include pathfinder material, a wayfinder does this exact thing, while also giving an extra bonus ontop of what the ioun stone would normally give.

In 3.5? Nothing else jumps to mind. If you're allowed Pathfinder stuff? A Wayfinder (https://www.aonprd.com/MagicWondrousDisplay.aspx?FinalName=Wayfinder)

Keep in mind that Ioun stones are just slotless magic items and are priced accordingly. So just asking a DM to let you reflavor them as something less weird isn’t that unreasonable.

In PF there's the Wayfinder: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/r-z/wayfinder-standard/

I don't know of anything else in 3.5.

Edit: bah, double ninja'd

Poison rings from Dragon Compendium are weapons, and thus should be able to be made as ioun blade weapons. So now you've got a ring with a stone in it that confers the benefits of the ioun stone.

You could also use the ioun blade enhancement in a necklace of natural attacks or amulet of mighty fists for a necklace that grants the ioun stone benefits.

There's also the horned helm or another helmet that grants a gore attack, which could hold the ioun blade enhancement for a head slot item.

Ioun blade gauntlets, for the hand slot.

Ioun blade on a boot blade, for the foot slot.

Ioun blade armor spikes, for the armor slot.

Etc.

That doesn't really work. The Ioun Blade is not an weapon enhancement. It's a specific weapon. You can't add the Holy Avenger ability to a spear or a warhammer, because it is not a weapon quality, but rather a specific weapon. Same thing with Ioun Blade.

Maybe something that gave you an extra head for them to orbit?

Same thing with Ioun Blade. The MIC has rules for adding item enhancements onto other items. Ioun blade works as well for that as anything else.

Weapons are designed to be quite modular, so players can have custom weapons as chosen by either themselves or granted by the DM. Calculating the cost of the ioun blade ability isn't hard, and adding it to another weapon isn't, either.

Alternatively, add morphing and sizing to an ioun blade to turn it into whatever you want, then further enhance it with other weapon abilities. An extension of the above.

Polymorph any object (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/polymorphAnyObject.htm) + fusion (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/fusion.htm) + astral seed (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/astralSeed.htm) + dismiss the polymorph + death between two different weapons (one of which is intelligent, for preference) to fuse them together? When the combination dies and comes back, it'll have all the abilities of both weapons. (This one's a bit convoluted, to be sure.)

I'm sure there are other ways to pull this off, as well.

Interesting. Maybe something like that could work.
