I noticed that Recloak smiled in the last strip (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1266.html), a smile of apparently sincere amusement and relief/joy. That's rare. I wanted to compile every time we saw him do that.

97: Evil Plans (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0097.html), talking about the vague-but-assuredly-evil plan (3 smiles!)
117: Delayed Gratification (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0117.html), knowing Xykon's not dead and the Plan continues (technically 7 smiles but a bit inconsistent with later characterization)
195: Book Nook (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0195.html), finding Serini's journal (5 smiles!! Deserved, considering it's the key to the whole Plan)
197: A change of Scale (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0197.html), preparing the armies to march to the next gate
300: Pick your Doom (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0300.html), knowing that he gets to have Xykon help him take down Azure City, get his revenge, create a city for goblins, AND advance the plan all at once. And he also gets to write color-coded cheat sheets for Gate locations. (5 smiles, including the ear-to-ear smile from panel 12!!! Probably the single strip where Redcloak is the happiest)
415: Idiot Box (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0415.html), finding out where the gate is exactly
545: Someone should be wearing safety goggles (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0545.html), a paladin tells him he will tell him where the next Gate is.
704: Dead Men Give no Speeches (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0704.html), being told the Dark One has a message for him
833: Villainy Afoot (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0833.html), getting away with Tsukiko's death
1206: Speaking Terms (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1206.html), knowing he pushed the gods to send someone to negociate. Also seems like he tries to trick Durkon into not being able to escape.
1211: Win conditions (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1211.html), thinking that the Plan might still work even if he dies.

369: Fight! (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0369.html), fighting Miko, each time he casts a spell (2 smiles)

422: March to War (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0422.html), telling "Xykon" to shut up and follow his directions and paladin killing anticipation
454: the Longshot (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0454.html), infiltrating the castle of Azure City, dodging Haley's arrows (4 smiles)
466: I think I left it in the Bag (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0466.html), happy that there's no paladin left to slaughter goblins now that Azure City has fallen
548: His most Despicable act yet (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0548.html), knowing that he can use their lack of knowledge to keep Xykon waiting while he creates Gobbotopia
702: One for the history book (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0702.html), declaring Gobbotopia an independant republic (3 smiles!)

192: Everything Sits Better on a Ritz (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0192.html), understanding that killing more hobgoblins would allow them to advance.

We can see pretty clearly that Recloak is getting worse. At the beginning of the comic, he smiled once every strip or every other strip he appeared in, and sometimes smiled continuously during a whole strip. But right now, it's more once every 5 to 10 strip he appears in, and rarely more than one panel each time. There are 64 panels with Redcloak smiling, but only 11 since he lost his eye on strip 655, and only 5 since he left Gobbotopia to Lirix on strip 703. Obviously most of his smiles are related to the Plan, and a little bit less than that are related to just hating paladins and wanting goblins to have a safe place to live in. As always, Oona is right on point.

I wonder what we could find doing this for other characters, like Belkar...

This is impressive and honestly an excellent way of understand Redcloak as a person. The smiles make the goblin I suppose.

Very nice. I had a good time. And here is another one for your list: In strip 704 in the third-to-last panel he smiles because of a message directly from The Dark One!

Such a wholesome thread. Between this and the thread about giving redcloak a hug, he really is the fandom's poor little meow meow...

It is rather reflective of his character that he gets happy more often at his own success and from schadenfreude than he does at the success of others... Even Belkar cracks a smile at Vaarsuvius whenever they're acting in the deep side of the swimming pool

For Belkar I'd suggest "motivations behind each time he hurts people". I think you'll find an interesting trend.

But yeah, Redcloak is definitely making an increasing number of villain smiles instead of heroic ones.

Should further break it down into mean smiles with the line or V above the eyes :smallamused: :smallyuk:, as opposed to genuine smiles.

Thank you! Don't know how I missed that one.

Yes! I added that criteria, breaking down the smiles between "sincere", "smug" and "villainous"! It's also very symptomatic of Redcloak's depression/fall deeper into the dark side since they reached Kraagor's gate. Before 704, we have 53 smiles, including 40 non-villainous smiles and 30 actually sincere ones. After 704, we have 11 smiles, including... ONE sincere smile and no smug smile. No wonder the smile in 1266 surprised me enough that I started this thread.

Awesome thread.
