Had some ideas for an upcoming 3.5e campaign scenario...
1. There is a hostile magocratic empire engaged in an unstable peace with the kingdom my players currently reside in.
2. A hundred years ago, the nations that opposed this empire had the benefit of a series of railways for transportation. These railways have fallen into disuse and disrepair- currently, there are no trains.
3. A bard-engineer is currently in the process of repairing one of these old trains, and has hired the party for a series of tasks- help in getting the train working, gathering the fuel to make it go, protecting the work from bandits, securing the cooperation of local nobility, and ultimately protection from agents of the wizards.
What I'm wondering is what kind of scenarios I could write up for them with this. What is the likelihood that enemy mages might try to collect one of those broken down trains for their own research? What difficulties would my players likely run into trying to repair the train, if they are directly involved?
