Craftsman as companion

I’m playing in a 3.5e game- our DM had stated that my (Mystic Theurge) character cannot recruit an artificer to his service as they do not exist in the campaign setting. I’d like my follower to be focused on crafting and item creation, what are my other options?

wizards get free item creation feats, albeit not as many as an artificer.
cleric has access to all spells on their spell list by default.
