View Full Version : Doubts about Sauron as a PC in DND.

Ragnaros.

I made a survey of the powers and abilities wielded by Sauron. I wanted your opinion if it makes sense to convert some of the character's powers into the DND Spell list.

Is it possible to say the Level, Class, Stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, etc)? Or is it impossible to define and Sauron could only be an NPC?

Spells:

- Volcano Control? - 9th level spell?

I think that He called himself Tar-Mairon, the GREAT (like the Mouth of Sauron called him).

And he really deserves the nickname. If we look at Sauron's "career", he accomplished some feats that few characters can match:

A) In the beginning:

- Was a spy for Melkor in the Court of the Valar, providing vital information and (theoretically) structurally weakening the lamps to be dropped by Melkor.

- Lieutenant of Melkor in Angband in the War of Powers to threaten the flank of the Valar in the siege of Utumno.

- Managed to escape, when wanted by the Valar, after the fall of Utumno.

- Participated in the corruption and creation of the Orcs. The accursed race multiplied, while Melkor was imprisoned in Valinor; already thinking of a numerous force to his master.

- Must have helped rebuild Angband for Melkor's return.

B) In the First Age:

- Took the fortress of Tol Sirion, when it was blessed by the power of Ulmo.

- Imprisoned evil spirits in beasts and created Werewolves.

- With Necromancy and illusion, destroyed an experienced guerrilla group.

- He was able to face the "clash of wills" against Mélian, the Maia.

- Fought and defeated Finrod in the "Battle of Songs of Power".

- He was defeated by the Hound of Oromë (immune against magic), but he was fighting Fate Itself as well.

C) In the second age:

- Religiously engineered the prehistoric men of Middle-earth through displaying powers, occult knowledge of metallurgy and engineering.

- Tricked the elves into creating rings and created the One. Through the One he was able to control the Morgoth Ingredient present in matter. In this way he controlled monsters, human kingdoms, animals and increased his power over the Earth (storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions).

- Gave 7 rings to the dwarves. They grew rich, but they attracted Balrogs, dragons, and misfortunes.

- Gave the men 9 rings. And these men must have launched dynasties in Harad, Rhûn, Khand, &c. And created the Nazgûl.

- Feigned to be captured by Númenor. From political prisoner he became the king's greatest adviser and high priest.

- Defeated the Valar's lightnings. Used spells to break the barrier of clouds that surrounded Valinor to help Ar-pharazôn's Navy.

- Was physically destroyed by Eru, but survived and "resurrected".

- Even weakened, managed to (telepathically) control half of all creatures, animals or rational beings. And Monster in the Battle of Dagorlad.

- Even weakened, he defeated Gil-galad and Elendil.

D) In the third age:

- Without the One Ring, he was capable of earthquakes, control the weather, volcanic eruptions.

- Gathered (by force of will/presence) Orcs, Trolls, Wargs and other monsters.

- He must have caused the great plague in the Third Age that devastated the realms of men.

- Caused Arnor's downfall.

- He physically rebuilt himself for the second time, without the One Ring in his hand. And still filled Mirkwood with darkness and monsters.

- Rebuilt the entire hierarchical structure and its armies to attack Middle-earth.

But, he didn't count on 4 Hobbits that spoiled all his plans.

If anyone needs it, I send the quotes in the works for the points raised. Some things are theories

Trying to stat out Sauron is going to create approximately as many problems as trying to stat out Gandalf. The whole structure of Middle Earth really isn't fully compatible with D&D cosmology, and his conception of magic throws any kind of balance (like the sort you'd want for a wizard in the party) completely out the window. Things like Nazgul have DR (all of it) / Main Character.

The one thing that most people can (probably) agree on, is that the One Ring is his Item Familiar.

If you absolutely had to shoehorn him into a D&D representation? As one of the Maiar, he'd probably be the equivalent of a Pit Fiend or Balor (contrasted to something like a Solar or Trumpet Archon for Gandalf and the rest of the Wizards), or possibly a unique creature like an Archdevil or Demon Lord. Dispater has a few thematic things in common with Sauron; you might want to start there for an idea of what he could do.

The old MERP (middle-earth roleplay) system statted out Sauron in Lords of Middle-earth, Volume I. It was a different system but it had instructions for converting it into D&D-style ones. Might be worth seeing if you can find a copy.

Adoration of the frightful might be a spell useful for him.

I think it's a huge amount of work, and you did a great job. I assume you're numbers have reasons.

Of course, you'll get good advice here. I've heard Middle Earth doesn't convert to dnd, and Gandalf might be E6, but if you're shooting for dnd level divinity then your work looks pretty. I'll leave it to my betters to critique it.

The way I’ve had knockoffs of sauron is have em be a psionic artificer with some kind of outsider heritage and a tendency to be charismatic.

HISTORY OF SAURON for people trying to figure out his abilities Ugly as sin eventually, but for a time, even Sauron was once known as the beautiful Mairon, good and uncorrupted.

But then he made a fiendish pact with Morgoth, who groomed the Maia smith into something horrendous, Gorthaur, the Dread Abomination.

But still he retained skill with the forge and the ways of weaving material into expressions of a song of hammers and tongs and flame unyielding.

He transformed into a werewolf for s time only to be bitten by a dog. Elves never let him live this down and this could be why he is not especially fond of the long eared people with long memories of that time he messed up.

As Annatar, many centuries later, he appeared, fair of form and bearing gifts. He gained cohorts like Celebrimbor, and hirelings, almost in parody of his old self’s nature… until he had ensnared the powerful in his grasp.

Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.

But the elves at least sensed trickery, so he didn’t make a good enough bluff check.

Open war broke out, as Sauron demanded ‘fine if you don’t let me Necrotic Dominate you all through a sympathetic resonance in the rings, then return the things, they cost me a hefty bit of crafting xp you know’

only a few people obeyed the recall order on the rings.

At some point he had a vacation on Numenor.

But at some point the normally very intervention adverse Eru went ‘no you can’t place your summer home on this ruined society, go be an active evil to the rest of the world, you absolute berk of a evil overlord’ and sank gthe entire island.

Sauron got out by dying and reforming by his ring so it pretty much is a phylactery at this point in time.

Another war happened, but this time a human had a vorpal sword, and Sauron the magic user sauron the builds tools and uses charm to woo people into serving him got in melee range of a low level fighter with no WBL limit, and with a snicker snack, the beast of a maia was slain, o frabjous day.

Except. Lich.

They keep forgetting he’s a lich.

Well he’ll show them. He’ll show them all!

Anyway a rather embarrassing sequence of events occured when an offshoot of humanity hucked his phylactery into his own forge, destroying it. He probably doesn’t enjoy people bringing it up that he died to some halfbreed pseudohuman farmers ultimately after all the power plays and grand gestures.

Oh also Gandalf was there for some of that, so add E6 Fighter to his foes too, very embarrassing for the Psionic Artificer/Thrallherd 1/Grim Psion probably on a pre-4e epic destiny progression

This one wouldn't be Sauron. But a Sauron-esque character...

A massively-leveled-up Falxugon (Fiendish Codex 2) Lichfiend (Libris Mortis). He'd need four levels of Warlock to get the required 5 at-will SLAs for Lichfiend; 11 to get the required CL 11 (unless you want to multiclass to something else). But something like Beguiling Influence, All-Seeing Eyes, and See the Unseen seem like thematic low-level invocations.

From Falxugon, Alignment Mask lets him bluff to obscure his alignment. Infernal Debt is the basis of the Morgul blade.
