How would this:

Large Outsider(Native)
HD: 9d8+18+7d4+14(89)
Initiative: + 7
Speed: 20 ft.(four squares), fly 60 ft. (good)
AC: 21 (-1 size, + 3 Dex, + 9 natural), touch 12, flat-footed 18
Base Attack/Grapple: +12/+20
Attack: Bite +15 melee (1d3+6 plus poison)
Full Attack: Bite +15 melee (1d3+6 plus poison)
Space/Reach: 10 ft./5 ft.
Special Attacks Constrict 2d8+6, improved grab, poison, psionics, spells, unanswerable strike + 4
Special Qualities: unimpeachable abjuration, darkvision 60 ft., etheral jaunt, telepathy 90 ft., warding 4/day, reactive warding, double warding, kaleidoscopic doom.
Saves: Fort + 10, Ref + 11, Will + 15
Abilities: Str 18, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 17, Wis 19, Cha 18.
Skills: Concentration + 15, Diplomacy + 17, Knowledge(nature, arcana) + 15, Listen + 16, Search + 15, Sense motive + 16, Spellcraft + 18 (+20 scrolls), Sport + 16, Survival + 4 (+6 following tracks), Tumble + 15, UMD + 15 (+17 scrolls)
Feats: Spell Focus(Abjuration), Greater Spell Focus(Abjuration), Skill Focus(Spellcraft), Eschew Materials, Improved Initiative

Constrict(Ex.): This creature deals 2d8+6 points of damage with a successful grapple check.
Improved Grab(Ex.): To use this ability, this creature must first successfully hit a creature up to two sizes larger with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can constrict.
Poison(Ex.) Injury, Fortitude DC 16, initial damage 2d4 strength, secondary 4d4 strength
Psionics(Sp.) At will-Detect Chaos, Detect Evil, Detect Law, Detect thoughts(DC 15)Invisibility, Plane Shift(DC 20)Polymorph(self-only). Effective caster level 9th. The save DCs are Charisma based.
Spells This creature casts spells as a 16th level sorceror.
Ethereal Jaunt(Su.) This ability works like the Ethereal Jaunt spell (caster level 16th)
Telepathy(Su.) This creature can communicate telepathically with any creature within 90 feet that has an Intelligence score. The creature can respond to the creature if it wishes - no common language is needed.
Warding(Sp.) This creature can create a personal warding(affects its space), an area warding(affects its space and all adjacent squares), or a warding wall (70 feet long and 35 feet high) four times per day, imbuing it with two of the seven veils. The personal and area wardings have a duration of 7 minutes, and the warding wall has a duration of 70 minutes.
Reactive Warding(Sp.) This creature can create a warding in response to an attack.
Kaleidoscopic Doom(Sp.) This creature can, as a standard action, target a greater dispel magic against one creature within 60 feet, except that for every effect dispelled, the victim is visited by one of the veils(from weakest to strongest)

Basically, a couatl with 7 levels in Initiate of the Sevenfold Cheese

do against this:

Level 17 Human Cleric
Level 17 Drow Assassin
Level 17 Monk
Level 17 Wu-Jen

using this battle plan in a darkened room 70ft by 70ft with 10 ft ceilings:

If it hears the PC's crashing on the door, casts greater invisibility
Casts Assay Resistance on the Assassin and Monk
1st: Attacks Wu-Jen(target). Repeat this action until it is grappled. Flies 60 feet away.
2nd. If charged by party, reactive warding with veils violet and blue as a wall which blocks off the party. Wu Jen takes damage
3rd. Cleric dispels the violet veil; Wu Jen takes damage. If the Drow and Monk charge through, another reactive warding.
4th: If target is dead, repeat from step one on the cleric, then the monk, then the drow. If not, repeat step two until target is dead. If any spells run out, recast.

Is it about the right challenge? Should I change the attack plan? I'm looking for the most powerful tactics the creature can use.

polymorph into a rat or a sickly human in rags who appears to be starving. wait for someone to make contact with the sickly human or drop their guard to help them...as a rat just meander around and sniff towards them and try and get on someone's shoe...

I would suggest to planeshift someone away...namely the ones with poor will saves, but that is pretty mean...

the walls should of course cut off enemies to be fought alone...lack of SR on the coatal means that they will be subject to any spell and they don't have that great of a save...their HP is 'low' and will die quickly if flanked or hit...divide and overwhelm...only hope.

"Casts Assay Resistance on the Assasin and Drow"

Isn't that a bit redundant? Anyways, it sounds like a pretty solid attack plan to me.
