Hmmm...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grue_%28monster%29

Grues are also present...in the browser-based RPG Kingdom of Loathing, as a nocturnal fighting familiar that appears as a pair of glowing eyes in a patch of darkness

VERY unlikely.
At least, unlikely to be a direct reference to kol.

Its a ninja grue, hence the reason Xykon won't let it leave the darkness.

SoD spoiler:

29 years ago, MitD was in a jungle, and commented how much he enjoyed the sunshine, which is distinctly ungrue-like.

No SoD needed we can see here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0147.html) how he loves to be under daylight.

Sorry but nothing in this theory makes sense (besides that one particular quote). Also, why would Rich want to borrow something from Jack Vance?

Oh well, it was worth a shot.

:mitd: wants to get out of the dark, while grues like darkness. Also, the grue in KoL is already a Zork reference, so that probably doesn't have anything to do with it.

improbable, but better than a lot of theories.

Grues are from Zork, not kol

I know, but in his original post The Bushranger uses the kol image to back up his theory.

Well, I just saw that, thought 'that sounds like a description of MiTD!', and threw it out for the board to chew on. And spit out, apparently. :smalltongue:

It WAS a good theory, it's just that a few in-comic instances and two SoD instances (the one I didn't suggest is actually a much more effective way of pointing out that the MitD isn't a grue) kinda get in the way...

Quick! Post my theory that Thog and Therkla are twins! They'll love that idea.

The MITD is...

Rich already made reference to Dragon Ball Z so why not take another character thingie from it? Majin Buu was a weapon of destruction (like the snarl) that could destroy anything? Maybe when that dwarf of the order of the scribble got turned into stone his spirit went into the portal and merged with the snarl, his strong high levelness then effected the snarl, he is good when he is not fully released again. Or perhaps The Monster is the snarl who used a small rift to get out instead of the big ones. The long range projection of energy made this spin off snarl become child like and when the very small rift collasped for some reason the snarl's "child" became permantly child like, and in the final battle he shall walk out of the darkness and when the OotS give him some new tea sets and a mr.floppy doll he fights his daddy in a pwnage end of the comic battle.

No. I have my own theory on what the MitD is, and it's not an Aboleth.

The Grue theory is actually pretty sound when you look at Start of Darkness

The hunters who captured him knew what he was, but were very much surprised to see it in the jungle (not its natural habitat). As a grue, it would be identifiable and being outside in the bright jungle would be very unnatural.

Um... No. Not quite:

Since a Grue's natural habitat is the darkness, no one has ever successfully seen one. So no one would recognise one even if they had encountered and successfully escaped from one. Also, the MitD doesn't like the darkness (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0023.html), which would be like someone saying they don't particularily care for air or water.
