View Full Version : Could we please have a second pronunciation guide?
Some of the newer character's names are giving me trouble, like Qarr and Kubota. If this has already been answered, please let me know.

Qarr - ku-ARR, work it all into one syllable.
Kubota - koo-bow-tuh

Eh? But Quarr and Kubota are some of the easier names to pronounce so far.
The different Asian alphabets are fairly straight-forward. Ku-bo-ta, Hin-jo, Li-en, Ka-zu-mi, Dai-go, etc. Just remember that 'u' is usually pronounced like a long 'o', 'i' like an 'eeh', 'a' like 'ahh' and 'o' like 'oh', and you should do fine with the AC names.

If I remember my Romanization correctly, Qarr should be pronounced something like "Char"

That would be correct, for Chinese at least, though I imagine its likely the same for Japanese.
Though, I'm not sure that these names are really intended as romanized versions of asiatic names, and I sort of have a feeling that is not the case.

What is this "Japan" you speak of? :smalltongue:

As well, Qarr is likely Abyssal or Infernal, so I don't think the same rules apply.

That makes sense, but I just figured I'd throw in another possible pronunciation.

I've often wondered if "Elan" is given an American or French pronunciation. Obviously, Rich doesn't write it Elán, but it seems too obvious to be a coincidence.
I think Elan is a variation of Alan, which is why it would be pronounced E-lin, not E-lan (like I originally thought).

The original pronunciation guide is stickied at the top of the page in "reoccuring / important threads and notices" (or something like that). It includes a post of the Giant's that says how to pronounce most of the names. This (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4992) is it.

But he's not wearing a mask...
Jokes aside, I vote for Karr. I pronounce all the Asian-language names phonetically, as they would be said in Japanese (except for ones that are obviously in a different language or spelled in non-standard romanization, such as Soon Kim being pronounced "soon", not "sohn". This one is clear from dialog.)
