View Full Version : Looking for a creature: large orc or goblin

I was looking over an older thread with the great list of all goblinoids and noticed they are all small or medium. I'm half hoping the list was incomplete and there might be a naturally large gobo out there. If not, an orc can do in a pinch, but didn't see any of those either.

Thoughts?

A greater barghest is Large, and it looks like a goblin.

You didn't say if you are player or DM.
If DM, just make a race. Take a look at the chart (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?588636-3-5-List-of-Goblinoids)of goblinoids and make a race based on one of them but large size. Adjust stats, CR, and other things accordingly.

If player, choices are different based on need and willingness of DM.

Bestiary of Krynn, Revised has Cave Lord - the only one legitimately Large goblinoid I'm aware

Some templates can boost creature's size past Medium - such as Tauric Hobgoblin-Griffon (from the example for Tauric Creature template), or Tainted Orc (from Warcraft the RPG; the template itself doesn't, actually, increasing the size, but example Tainted Orc is still Large-sized for some reason)

Bugbears were Large in AD&D
"Minions of the Lost" - from official online supplement for Birthright - included Orog Spawns (who were of Huge size!)

From The Ruins of Undermountain boxed set:

J: is the temporary lair of five goblins. PCs may surprise them, opening the door to discover four goblins playing at dice (gambling with gold pieces!) and one bigger goblin standing guard at the door.
This "big goblin" is actually an intelligent mimic, working with the goblins. It eagerly embraces any attacking PCs.

Finally, how about Anthropomorphic Orca?

Some templates can boost creature's size past Medium

I particularly like Half-Minotaur and Half-Ogre templates from Dragon #313.

Variant half fiend web article on the Wizards of the Coast website also had one that boosts size.

So just have orcs/goblins who really enjoy sex with Minotaurs/Ogres/Demons and you can have larger ones!

One more possible variant: Grendel - and his Mother - were statted in Dragon #329 as Large Monstrous Humanoids
(Check the literary origin of "orcs"...)

I particularly like Half-Minotaur and Half-Ogre templates from Dragon #313.
A Half-Ogre would be especially fitting - because "Orog" originally meant "Orc-Ogre" (and Ogrillon was another result of the same mix)

Variant half fiend web article on the Wizards of the Coast website also had one that boosts size.
For the extra "orciness", let that fiend to be Orcus

There aren't really any Large orcs or goblins for the same reason that there aren't any Large humans or elves or dwarves.

Another way to approach this could be something like this:
One particular tribe of orcs or goblinoids has a cultural tradition that once they reach puberty, they get an enlarge person + permanency cast on them by the tribe's shaman and spend their whole life large. Most warriors invest in a spellblade attuned to Dispel Magic, as losing their size is a source of great shame! (Alternatively, a Dweomerkeeper shaman makes it impossible to dispel)

Kind of into homebrew territory, but the Io-Rach goblins dip themselves into a vat of alchemical substances, which can transform them from small to medium.

Theoretically, if you dipped a medium goblinoid into the vat, it might make it large...

Bugbears are technically medium, but they're at the extreme upper end of medium.

And consider that, in our world, there have occasionally been people like Andre the Giant. Human, but Large nonetheless. If that's possible for humans, no reason it shouldn't be possible for hobgoblins (which are human-sized) or bugbears (which are larger).

Pathfinder - in the Kaiju Codex - has "Hubrun, The Big Goblin": CR 8 Gargantuan 10 HD Monstrous Humanoid

3E has its own "Kaiju" template in Dragon #289 (although it adds 40 HD, reduces Int to 2, and set Speed to 20')
