The Runic is an archetype for the Spellweaver Akashic Class, which can be found here (https://libraryofmetzofitz.fandom.com/wiki/Spellweaver). It is part of the Shards of Power playtest, the whole google doc can be found here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jJ4Rdjjb7N22aNZwvEeva8UcRaQLjCMOwb_pnAlyWSM/edit?usp=sharing)

Runic

The power of an ancient and long forgotten language that manifests as runes flows through the Runic, empowering their magics while they bestow blessings on allies and curses on foes. These runes are pulled from the Akashic Record itself, and they define its unfathomable concepts.

Proficiencies: A runic is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with light armor. They can cast spells using their wordweaving ability while wearing light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a runic wearing medium or heavy armor or a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure.
This modifies the spellweaver’s weapon and armor proficiencies.

Runic Veilweaving: A runic learns to shape the magical power known as akasha into powerful veils, though they channel these veils through their knowledge of an ancient language of akashic runes. The runic chooses a single mental ability score (Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma) and uses it as their veilweaving modifier, and has a veilweaving level equal to their class level. The saving throw DCs of the runicÂ’s veils are equal to 10 + the essence invested in the veil + the runic’s veilweaving modifier.

Runes: Rather than drawing veils from a codified list, each runic develops their own unique selection of veils based on their knowledge of the runic language. This knowledge is based on a mixture of their own research and the intuition and insight into the language they gain as they grow. At 1st level, the runic chooses a number of veils equal to their veilweaving modifier (minimum 2) + 2 and treats those selected veils as their veil list. These veils must have the Brand, Title, or Shatter descriptors and cannot be veils shaped in esoteric chakras such as Blood or Ring veils. At each level thereafter they may choose an additional veil following the above limitations to add to their list.
Veils the runic shapes using their spellweaver veil slots are composed of glowing runes, and as such their effects are vulnerable to erase spells and similar effects. An erase spell cast on a runic’s veil is treated as a targeted dispel magic check following the normal rules for dispelling veils. A runic’s veils and their effects can also be identified with a Linguistics or Knowledge (Arcana) skill check, though the personal styles of each runic obscure this check, adding +5 to the normal DC to Identify their veils.

The runic can only shape a limited number of veils per day. They can shape 2 veils at 1st level, and gain the ability to shape 1 additional veil each day at 2nd level, 5th level, and every two levels thereafter.

Whenever a runic shapes a veil with the title or brand descriptor using a spellweaver veil slot, that veil does not take up their chakra slots and does not count as occupying the slots in their description for the purpose of binding veils to that slot. This does not allow the runic to shape the same brand or title multiple times, but does allow them to shape brands or titles that would normally be shaped in a slot with other veils that can be shaped in that slot.

At 1st level, the runic gains access to a pool of essence which can be invested into their veils and other essence receptacles to increase their power. The runic gains 1 point of essence at each class level.
This modifies the spellweaver’s veilweaving class feature.

Enruned Veils: At 1st level the runic gains a unique understanding of the ancient language of the akashic record they draw their power from. The runic may treat a single veil they have shaped with the shatter descriptor as an Enruned Veil, determined when they shape their veils for the day. An enruned veil gains additional power when the runic shatters other veils, being treated as if it were invested with +1 additional essence whenever the runic shatters veils to use its wordweaving class ability for as long as the shattered veil remains suppressed. This additional essence may exceed the normal essence limits of their veils.
The runic may choose to shatter an enruned veil while casting a spell with the wordweaving class ability and use the enruned veils shatter effect with an action cost of up to a standard action as a full-round action.

At 8th and 16th level the runic may treat an additional veil they have shaped with the shatter descriptor as an enruned veil when they shape their veils for the day and at 10th level they may use an enruned veils shatter effect in conjunction with their wordweaving class ability as a standard action instead of a full-round action.
This replaces the spellweaver’s tempered veils class feature.

Akashic Scribe: At 1st level the Runic gains a tome and stylus formed from their soul that represents their connection to the Akashic Record. They gain the Book and Quill of the Akashic Record (https://libraryofmetzofitz.fandom.com/wiki/Book_and_Quill_of_the_Akashic_Record?so=search) veil and may treat it as if it were always shaped, without it being counted against their limit of shaped veils or it taking up their hands slot. They may invest essence in this ability as normal. They treat the tome granted by this veil as their spellbook for their Wordweaving class ability and may always treat their hands as free for the purpose of performing the somatic components of their wordspells while wielding the quill and tome granted by this ability. In addition, the runic may use the quill to write on any surface as per the arcane mark spell with a caster level of their runic level and they are always treated as having the read magic cantrip prepared.

At 4th level, the runic gains the veil’s Hands bind effect and the following additional benefit: once per day when the runic prepares their wordspells they may choose another wordcasting class; they find one effect word per spell level they can cast from that class’s spell list in their tome and may memorize them without it counting against their normal limit of memorized words. These spells disappear from the tome moments before they prepare their spells again, but may be found the next day should they choose to find them again. Finally, the runic no longer needs to pay the normal material costs when transcribing new spells in their tome, and the time required to do so is halved.
This replaces the spellweaver’s bonus feat normally gained at 4th level.

Wordweaving: Runic's utilize a form of spellcasting with origins even more ancient than regular spellweavers: Words of Power. These runes and words are drawn directly from the akashic record and define fundamental concepts of reality. Rather than using spell slots to cast their spells, they cast wordspells using the essence of one of their veils to fuel it, temporarily shattering it in the process and burning that essence. The runic uses words drawn from the magus (https://www.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?Name=Magus%20Words&Category=Class%20Word%20Lists) and sorcerer/wizard (https://www.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?Name=Sorcerer/Wizard%20Words&Category=Class%20Word%20Lists) lists. Only sorcerer/wizard words of 7th level or lower are considered to be part of the runic word list. The runic has no spell slots, and uses the ability score chosen as their Veilweaving modifier as their casting ability score modifier. The DC for saving throws against runic’s wordspells is 10 + the wordspell’s overall level + the runic’s casting modifier.

Rather than preparing a number of spells of each spell level each day, the runic can prepare a total number of effect words each day equal to their class level + their wordcasting modifier (minimum 1). They can only cast wordspells of a maximum level based on their spellweaver class level. At 1st level, they can only learn and prepare 1st level words and wordspells. This increases to 2nd level wordspells at 4th level, 3rd level wordspells at 7th level, 4th level wordspells at 10th level, 5th level wordspells at 13th level, 6th level wordspells at 16th level, and 7th level wordspells at 19th level. This includes any wordspells prepared with metamagic or metawords. For example, a 1st level wordspell prepared with the Silent Spell metamagic feat would count as a 2nd level wordspell for this purpose. A runic can spontaneously apply any metamagic feat they possess with a +0 level adjustment as part of casting a wordspell using this ability without an increase to its casting time. To learn and cast a runic wordspell, the spellweaver must have a casting ability score equal to or greater than 10 + the wordspell’s level.

Instead of casting spells normally, a runic combines effect words with a target word to create magic. For each wordspell, a certain number of effect words may be combined to form the magical effect depending on the effective level of the wordspell. Make sure to review the Words of Power rules for the guidelines on forming wordspells.

The runic uses their tome to learn and prepare their wordspells, and must do so each day while they shape their veils. They cannot prepare any words not recorded in their tome. A runic begins play with their tome containing three 1st-level effect words of their choice, all 0-level effect words from their list, and all target words. The runic also selects a number of additional 1st-level effect or meta words equal to their wordcasting modifier (minimum 1) to add to their tome. At each new runic level, they gain two additional words of any spell level or levels that they can cast (based on their new runic level) to add to their tome. At any time, a runic can also add words found in other spellbooks to their own. A runic can learn spells from a magus’ or wizard’s spellbook, just as a wizard or magus can from a runic’s spellbook. The spells learned must be on the runic word list.

The runic casts wordspells using a combination of words they have memorized for the day. The runic can use this ability to cast the same wordspells multiple times each day. They cannot shatter any veils gained from as class abilities, from feats, racial features, or from other classes to cast wordspells using this ability. A shattered veil has its effects completely suppressed (unless otherwise noted) for 10 minutes, and all of the essence invested in it at the time of its shattering is burned. This burned essence is not able to be normally recovered, but is recovered automatically when the veil is no longer suppressed. If the burned essence was bound to the shattered veil, it remains bound to the veil after this duration. The wordspell is then cast normally, gaining a bonus based on the chakra slot the shattered veil was shaped in, and the amount of essence burned, as per Table: Spellweaving Chakra Effects found on the Spellweaver class page.

If a wordspell cast using wordweaving has a duration longer than 10 minutes (including wordspells with a duration of permanent, such as permanency, but not spells with an instantaneous effect, such as the Undeath word, the runic must choose whether to end the effects of the wordspell after this 10 minute period, or whether they leave the veil suppressed for the remaining duration. At any time, as part of investing their essence, the runic can choose to end the duration of one of these effects and unsuppress the veil (only after the initial 10 minutes has passed). The runic must provide all of the components of a spell cast using their wordweaving ability, as normal for casting the spell. A runic can never shatter a minor veil as part of their wordweaving ability.

The runic may only have a certain number of veils shattered at a time. At 1st level, they may shatter up to 2 veils at a time to cast wordspells. This limit increases by an additional 1 at 5th level and every 4 levels thereafter. If the runic has reached their limit of shattered veils, they cannot shatter additional veils to cast wordspells until one of their shattered veils has reformed. Veils shattered through means other than wordweaving don’t count against this limit.

This modifies the spellweaver’s spellweaving ability, but not for the purposes of archetype compatibility. If an archetype would replace the spellweaver’s ability to shatter veils to cast spells with the ability to shatter veils for another ability, the limits imposed by this ability apply to that ability as well.

Runic Literacy: The runic always treats all of their 0-level effect words and meta words as prepared as long as they have time to prepare their words from their tome for that day, and these words do not count against their limit of prepared words.
This modifies and replaces the spellweaver’s cantrips, but counts as the spellweaver’s cantrips class feature.

Low Chakra Binding: At 2nd level, the lord of magic gains access to a low chakra bind. Each day when they shape their veils, they can choose whether they wish to bind veils to the Feet or Hands slot. At 4th level, they gain the ability to choose a second such bind. At 5th level, they add the Head slot to the list of chakra slots they may choose with this ability. At 6th level, they gain the ability to bind all three of the above chakra.
This modifies the spellweaver’s low chakra binding class feature.

Binding Words: At 2nd level, the runic’s mastery over their runes allows them to bind them for greater effect. Each day when the runic shapes their veils for the day they can choose to give up one or more of their chakra binds granted by their low chakra binding, middle chakra binding, high chakra binding, or pinnacle chakra binding class features to instead gain the ability to bind one of their brand or title veils. If the brand or title veil has multiple chakras it can be shaped to, the runic chooses which chakra slot they treat it as bound to when they shape the veil.

Emphatic Flourishes: Starting at 4th level the Runic learns to punctuate their runes with flourishes that grant their magics greater potency. The runic may automatically use a metaword on a single effect or target word in their wordspell as long as it does not increase the total wordspell level.
Using this ability does not count against their normal uses of meta words for the day.
This ability replaces the spellweaver’s Automatic Heightening class feature

Metaphrasing: At 6th, 12th, and 18th level instead of choosing a metamagic feat the runic may instead choose a single metaword of a level they can use (except for the boost meta word). They may apply that word to their wordspells without it counting against their daily limit of meta words. At 6th level this meta word may not increase the overall level of the words it affects by more than 1. At 12th level this limit increases to 2, and at 18th level 3.
This modifies the spellweaver’s Metaweavng class feature.

Bonus Feat: At 7th level, and every three levels thereafter, a runic gains a bonus feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement. These bonus feats must be selected from those listed as akashic, combat, item creation, metamagic, or the Extra Word or Meta Word Mastery feats. When acquiring combat feats, the runic counts 1/2 their total spellweaver level as their fighter level for the purpose of qualifying for feats. If they have levels in fighter, these levels stack. They must otherwise meet the prerequisites for these bonus feats as normal.
This modifies the spellweaver’s Bonus Feats class feature.

Middle Chakra Binding: At 8th level, the lord of magic gains access to a middle chakra bind. Each day when they shape their veils, they can choose whether they wish to bind veils to the Wrists or Shoulders chakra. At 10th level, they gain the ability to choose a second such bind. At 11th level, they add the Headband slot to the list of chakra slots they may choose with this ability. At 12th level, they gain the ability to bind veils to all three of the above chakra.
This modifies the spellweaver’s middle chakra binding class feature.

Shards of Truth: At 9th level the runic’s ability to bestow their runes upon others persists, even when their true meaning is broken. Whenever the runic shatters a brand or title veil they have bestowed upon another as part of their wordweaving ability, instead of being suppressed that veil is instead treated as if it had 0 points of essence invested in it, cannot have essence invested into it (or be treated as if it were invested with more essence), and if it was bound to a chakra slot it is considered to be unbound for the duration of the shattering. Any essence invested in it at the time of its shattering is still burned, as normal. A veil shattered in this way cannot be shattered again, despite not being suppressed. Once the effects of the shatter end, it returns to its normal state (it is able to be invested with essence, and regains any bind effects it lost).

High Chakra Binding: At 14th level, the lord of magic gains access to a high chakra bind. Each day when they shape their veils, they can choose whether they wish to bind veils to the Neck or Belt slot. At 16th level, they gain the ability to bind both of the above chakra.
This modifies the spellweaver’s high chakra binding class feature.

Pinnacle Chakra Binding: At 18th level, the lord of magic gains access to a pinnacle chakra bind. Each day when they shape their veils, they can choose whether they wish to bind veils to the Chest or Body slot. At 20th level, they gain the ability to bind both of the above chakra.
This modifies the spellweaver’s pinnacle chakra binding class feature.
